Cudos to Mr DJ,
After several contacts with ESM in Hong Kong, they confirmed to him that the CG is measured 151mm back from the "crook" in the wing not measured at the wing root.
This is good news and means less nose weight. This weekend I'll be experimenting with moving all four lipos to the hatch area behind the firewall and extending the motor wires. I'm determined to add as little nose weight as possible.

More good news to report.
By moving the 4 lipos and the rx batteries to the front hatch area I only need 12 oz of nose weight in the cowl.
I extended the motor to esc wires 25 inches and so far no problem on run-up.

I know Castle dosen't like extra wire length, but if you keep the wire gauge large enough you should be fine. Just go one size larger than what the ESC uses and keep it as short as possible. You can also extend the motor wires too. Not sure what's better. Maybe a motor expert will chime in?

It is better to extend motor wires vs. battery wires. That being said, if you have any sizeable battery extensions, you should put the extra capacitors inline. What happens is that a voltage wave will start as the throttle is moved up and down. Generally this is only gets bad if you jockey the throttle alot, as you would in aerobatic/3d flying. Warbird pilots are generally smoother with their throttle inputs and the risk of waves is reduced. The voltage wave will take out the ESC, sometimes in a spectacular fashion.
We had a guy at the field with an electric 33% Edge that he 3d'ed quite a bit. He ended up smoking several ESCs before getting the problem sorted out. One actually caught fire in the air! Another flying buddy was running the exact same ESC with long leads in a 100amp EDF and never had a glitch. In fact, he could land and the esc was nice and cool.
I THINK??? the ICE controllers from Castle can log voltage waves/ripples in their internal log. You have to use the Castle Link to extract the data for viewing.

Not to throw a wrench in here or anything, but ESM has listed BAD cg's in manuals before. Case in point the 71" P-51 listed at 157mm at the wing root. The actual CG that is flyable for that plane is much closer to 128mm.
I know this may sound a bit odd, but, Id suggest talking to someone thats flown a large DO-335 no matter what brand and get where his CG is. You should be able to use that as a gauge to locate your own based off the scale size of that other plane relative to the ESM. Don Smith has plans for one and there are a few threads on it here on RCU. Might be worth investigating where they had the CG at and figure out where it should be on the ESM based on that. Compare it to what ESM is actually saying to see if they match up.

You two Gents are dickin’ around in dangerous territory… What makes you think that the CG of one designer of the same plane will match that of the other? If the wings are different, so will be the CG. And even if they are close, which way would you suggest he go: up or down?

Jim, the calc Ty provided was on the money; the info and photo that I provided you from ESM is on the money. I think you should stay on the money… That’s what I’m goin’ to do…

I didnt say the CG's would be the same.....I said based on the size of a Don Smith Do-335 and what the CG is for THAT plane, you can compare it to where it SHOULD be on the ESM relative to its own size to make sure ESM is listed right. They have listed BAD cg's in manuals before. I was just trying to offer a helpful suggestion to verify. Im not "DICKin" around anything thank you.

Towerhobbies.com sells Major Decals brand and they have .40 and .60 size WWII german decals that include swastikas.
Or you can contact Callie-graphics and have her make you some for pretty cheap.

Have just received my Do335 It's one of the most exiting models I have ever built! I will make some changes to hide those ugly rudderhorns and make some working bombdoors.
Have choosed a Laser120 in front and a Laser100 in the tail. I will also make a sort of scale exhaust on it.
Is there anybody who have flown this bird??

wonder if that laser 360v would fit in the ESM FW-190 D9?

Yes it would. The firewall is 8.75" on the ESM 190-D.. the laseris 3.89" from center for crank.....

As far as the CG goes, I think it is important to learn how to calculate where it should be for a given airfoil. I would not trust these manuals as they have proven themselves to be wrong. The CG is almost always at the thickest part of the airfoil. When sweep is thrown in (like in this case) it will be moved back. This is pretty easy to calculate. Especially if you get that application for your android phone.

In model sizes the airfoil does not affect the balance location. Use one of the balance calculators from the "Aerodynamics' section and go for the most forward location. Balance affects pitch stability (or 'speed' stability, if you like) and while you can get it too far forward, and the model will not flare no matter how much elevator movement you can get, just a bit far back and the elevator movement won't matter. If the model versions of the full size are all of a similar layout, then the balance point will always be in a similar, relative, position no matter what the size of the model. You will note that the balance calculators do not ask what airfoil the model has... It is probably worthwhile doing a quick check against the manufacturers instructions, just in case, as there are some misleading balancing instructions out there... For my own WW2 scale jobs I always aim for 25% MAC and I am happy with 20%, but I use much more elevator movement than many I know and I always adjust the elevator movement to allow enough for a stall at low speed which allows plenty for the landing flare. The only problem I have is that other flyers of my models rate them a bit too easy to fly, but I think I can live with that...

Has anyone flown one of the ESM DO-335s yet? If so, how did it go?

I'm finishing up the cockpit kit from Ty and hope to fly next weekend.
I have taxied the plane at our field and the the plane handles very well on the ground. The club was yelling to let her rip, but the plane wasn't balanced yet...though it was tempting. [X(]

My initial balance using one of the calculators had the CG about where the manual suggests. 151 mm back from the crook in the wing's leading edge. That will be my starting point. I'm still moving things around to accomodate the cockpit kit. My original servo placement for the nose wheel was right where the cockpit tub goes.[:@]

First of all don't mind the mess in the shop... Anyway I dropped a straight linse down the fuse to what appeared to be the thrust line. I had the fuse sitting in a stationary position, The incidence meter readi 1 degree positive... I then moved it to the centerline on the rib. The showed 3 degrees positive. So the wing sets at about 2 degrees positive to the thrust line.....

ty
Hey Ty,
I'm trying to balance my DO 335. I usually balance a plane by setting the Robart meter on the wing and finding "0" incidence. I'll add weights to the tail or nose until the plane balances at "0". This made the Do look a little to "tail up".
You seem to make the fuselage level to the thrust line and then add weight to keep the fuse at "0" level. I'm thinking you're doing it the right way. That would drop the tail down a bit and give a little positive incidence to the wing.

The straight line down the fuse in your pictures went from the front engine shaft to...where? The other engine shaft or to the horizontal stab?

Thanks,

Jim

The first pic there showed the trust line I used. the motor are not in line with each other . The rear engine is a little higher. The front thrust line I figured straight down the fuse or 90 degrees to the front of the fuse...

You want the tail high when you balance this thing...

Have done some more on the anteater Received some very nice retracts from Darrel at Sierra. I will try to hide most of the rudderhorns in this model.
Who will be the first one to make the Erstflug here on this forum?
