RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
I have to agree with Kahlog on this one. I love the Do-335 and have wanted one since Al-masters released the kit many years back. The complications were the power plants. I too will get the ESM version and go with an electric setup. Twins are tricky enough and to have a dead stick is a sickening feeling especially if the failure is the front engine. When the time comes, I'm thinking around the lines of a 50cc electric in front and a 120 electric aft.

RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
The full scale DO335 could fly on the rear engine only. I wonder if this is the case with the model? Would be interesting to see someone try. Maybe turn the mix off between the two engines/motors to just throttle the rear, with the front at idle or off. I suppose it would be a matter of having enough power to keep it aloft. Probably would not want to try a take off on the rear only. I guess it all depends on the wing loading.
Well that's OK Ram, I still think your a coll guy.

I have flown mine for many years
and have lost both front or rear motor at different times'
I would fly better if only the rear motor was flying instead of only the front motor was flying
either way'
as soon as I realized i had lost a motor I set up for a landing
Started with 2 OS 1.08
changed to front G 26 rear 1.08
now Front DLE 30 rear 1.08
I didnt make single engine passesthat may be one of the reasons i have had this very difficult plane flying since 1989
drew my own plans from three views

I hate you guys, you have me ready to pull the trigger again.....I've fought this one off for a while now, but its getting harder.
Jim I've almost wore out your video of the maiden(sorry) and watching it doesn't help with the trigger effect at all. Any more vids by the way, or is it too fast for most to film lol?
Lets see...I've got two eflight 160s in the box with castle creations 120 ESC's...battery's? Yep plenty of them too. It's getting harder to say no, and I'm running out of room to hide things!
Ewwww, I hate you guys!

RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
let me clairfy
not difficult to fly
for a heavy 26lb on 80 in wing
it flies like it should Warbird style
It is difficult because it is a twin-although it is the easies of twins because the motor are not offset so no yaw when you loose and engine
heavy
twin
trike
and the landing and take off must be gradual in pitch or the bottom rudder will hitmine did bottom rudder came off went through the rear motor made for a very interesting take off
at about 5 foot pitched up for take off suddenly loss of the rear motor very lucky to land straight ahead. that is when I went to larger motor in the front-it will now fly with athourity on the front motor
now that i read what I wrote- I have change my mindit is not that difficult to fly
Like the lady on Saturday nite Live used to say-NEVERMIND

Madness. We warned you. Now your hoarding parts. Have you ever told your family the actual cost of an airplane? You might need an RC intervention.

Well I took the first step to purchasing this one today...sold off my ESM P 39 to make some room. Now I just need to sell my 1/4 scale cub and its all good! I even got the wife's approval . After all, I'm getting rid of two others[8D]
Seriously though, I had to sell these two to have room for the DO335...
Soon

Nice work Casey
Have the same problem... no more room, things MUST go before I take on any more projects. I'll just have to live vicariously through your efforts on this one
Thanks

RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
Just to add insult to injury...lol....I ordered a BH Stuka to compliment my hangar of german planes. It's on sale right now for $249 at hobbypeople and comes with an aluminum spinner and sprung landing struts.
I had an ESM...it didnt have oleo struts...... but ...well...didnt survive the maiden as the saito 150 went dead just after lift off. I know the BH is marginally smaller and not quite as scale, but its still a good sized stuka and I can posh it up some to look better. I will do that after finishing the DO-335. Maybe put that 50cc turnigy in it ROFL.....probably not...but we'll see
Friend of mine is building a Piper Cub and I have one also(an old Kyosho arf)...so I will slap that thing together in the enxt couple of days while waiting on the motors to show up for the DO-335.

The first Youtube clip is my plane on maiden. No mufflers, clocked at close to 100mph, show stopper. People love this unusual twin. I've even gotten great response from people while driving down the freeway with the DO hanging out the back of the truck. I looked everywhere last year for someone who had done a ESM Dornier as an electric, but found nothing. I guess I'm the guinea pig. Let me know if you have any questions beyond the video.

Kahloq, do you think the BH struts/gear would fit the ESM Stuka? If one could buy BH struts/gear spare parts somewhere (but where?) maybe that could be a way to get my ESM Stuka back ''on line'' again....

BTW...I ended up building the BH Stuka before starting the DO-335. Here's a few pics of it. I am currently working on something completely off the wall. Once thats done, I'll get to the DO-335

RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
Having built an ESM stuka in the past, the prebent wire for the gear supplied with the plane is very thick so I don't know how difficult it would be to fit a robart oleo strut over it

BTW. If I hadn't mentioned it previously, for the do-335, I have a gunfire 65cc for the front that will spin a 20x14 3blade and a power 60 for the tail that will spin a 16x10 3blade

Is all of the wing, tail and control surfaces fully sheeted? I'm thinking one of these may be good for a kit bash, which will involve stripping, glassing and full surface detail... unless i'd have to sheet some open bays, in which case, i'll just build the larger Don smith 335..

RE: ESM Dornier DO 335
It has been a while since I've posted on this forum. In the Summer of 2011, I had flown my ESM Dornier with fixed gear and a minimum of work - just to make sure it flew good - which it did. It weighed 24 pounds wet. For power, I had an OS 55cc gas engine in the front and nothing in the back. I may be the only person in the country that ever bought one of those engines!! Good engine - way overpriced!
Last winter I stripped the wings and tail of the iron-on. Then I sheeted the wings and stab where they were open, fiberglassed them and painted them. I still like to use Epoxy paint, so I spent some time matching - it still wasn't perfect, but close. I sure wish ESM would sell the paint they put on these airplanes. Their paint is great - you can spill almost anything on it and it doesn't hurt it. I know they must have vats of it in China - if they would sell it, it would sure make things easier for touch-up, etc. While the wings were stripped, I created wheel wells for the Sierra gear. I also moved the aileron servos more rearward in the wings (I have no idea why they put them so far forward). I installed the Sierra gear. I set up a torque rod in the upper rudder so that no horn/servo arm/linkage would show. On the rear I had a free-wheeling feathered Varioprop.
The glassing and painting the surfaces added 14 ounces, and the Sierra gear added about 3 pounds, so now it weighed 28 pounds wet.
I flew it this way, and it still flew great. The best part was then when I put the flaps down, basically nothing changed except it slowed down - no pitch change - no loss of stability. It flies and lands like a dream. I then flew it with a 3 pound weight over the CG to see how it would fly with the anticipated weight gain when I convert it to electric - it still flew fine at 31 pounds.
So, this winter, I am going to finish it up. I can't stand the engine head sticking down below - it ruins the look of it. And it just isn't right without a rear engine. So, I am going to convert it to electric front and rear.
I know JIMKRON flew his with two E-flite 160s, and someone else had one with two E-Flite 110s (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7Rvw...e_gdata_player) posted earlier on this thread. The one with two 110s seemed to have plenty of power. Are there any new experiences or opinions out there about electric power for this airplane??? I definitely want to use a Varioprop 3-bladed prop on the front and back, as they have a very scale-like one - and then I can fiddle with the pitch on each motor.
So, please give me latest opinions on what would be best for power set-ups. Thanks.
The other stuff I still have to do on the airplane are:
- graphics/markings/detailing
- cockpit - I don't want to cut away the bottom of the canopy area - so I will probably use a portion of one of TYs cockpit kits.
- exhaust stacks - JIMKRON - what is the place in the UK where you got your stacks - those look great
- machine guns - any suggestions on these ??
