Wanted to also note....Im using a slightly smaller e-flite power 110 in an ESM 73" ME-109 with a 20x10 turnigy cherry woodprop:

on 8s so two of those size would also work in the Do-335. It would amount to only a decrease of about 400rpm's, but saving a decent amount of weight.....which could be put to use with more capacity.

Hey Jim,
Can You tell me where you got the Motor mount from and also that rear spinner. They both look great. I have watched you video a couple more times. That thing looks great with both those motors running. The only thing is it did not look like it took much effort to hold the fuse in place....at full throttle

Yesterday, someone posted a question to me "do I have the OS 55 in hand?"/"can you give me more information?". That post seems to have disappeared, but I will answer it anyway. The answer is "YES, I do have it in hand", and here are a couple of photos of the start of the installation.

The OS bolts right onto the firewall, and with 1/2" standoffs (so the head doesn't hit the firewall), the length is perfect. I haven't decided how to do the muffler. Obviously, it won't be a "Pitts-type" wrap-around. In any case the head/muffler will show on the bottom.

As I said in another post, I am thinking about doing it electric instead. I originally didn't want to go electric because of the sound (NOT enough noise). But, then when you think about it, using a gas engine gives us a big-ugly non-scale head and muffler sticking out. Either way, something is non-scale.

But, if you want to go gas, the OS 55 would be just right for it. The OS has usual OS quality and I like the front carb and crankshaft timing as opposed to reed-valves.
I also like that it doesn't need 3" standoffs to clear a rear carb.
Another nice feature is that the rear bolt pattern, the prop bolt pattern, and the exhaust pattern are the same as a DA-50. So all my props, spinners, and mufflers I have for my DAs will work with the OS 55.

By the way, I haven't actually run my OS 55 yet. I couldn't find anything on the internet with opinions on how it runs, other than what OS and Tower have (I assume these are "prejudiced" opinions). Does any unbiased person have any experience with this engine???? I've got several 50cc airplanes, so I will break it in on one of them before it goes into the DO-335.

I wonder how many of the OS 55 are out there. I am sure they have sold some but that is a very tight market. The DLE engines just really seem to have them all beat. Unless you want a different configuration like the front carb. The OS offering does look very nice.

That was I who asked the GT55 question then deleted it...my Bad...and thanks for the response. That is one monster 55, so is its cost, but we Big Boys pay the cost to be the Boss. The engine/motor options are many and that’s a good thing.

DL 55/30 were my first intent, then two 180HP came into my life; sweetest engine I’ve ever seen but it cost a group: http://www.syssaaircraft.net/cart/pc...1&idcategory=2 not too much, just too much for a 30cc, but it is sweet.

I need larger than a 160 electric; it’s the turbine in me I guess. Check out the below Turnigy 130, more massive than the E-Flight 160.

That motor you listed is ok, but is an upgraded version of the old HXT and that one had bearing problems. Ive got a friend that had two and both blew their bearings. Once he replaced them, the motors ran ok...but you've also got to check the magnets and make sure they are glued on well.
That newer turnigy version has screws around the can helping to hold the magnets, so better quality. Ive got many turnigy motors and 98% run well, but the real large ones have had QC problems in the past. for the price though, $100 for a 12s motor....its a great idea.

If you really have turbine performance on the brain...then use this motor. Its also from Hobbyking, but has gotten nothing but 5 start. Its a 50-80cc gas equivalent and will run on 12s turning massive props

Or if you wanna just be super insane beyond belief...heres a 100cc electric motor that can take an input voltage from 30-70volts... you heard that right...up to 17-18cell lipo. Some guys are running these on 12s and turning 28x12 props without breaking a sweat or using 18s and pushing 16000 watts. Easily enough to hover a 35pound plane. The cavat is...you need at least a 200-250amp esc.

Well Mr. DJ,
I just ran the 160 to check amp draw for our friends at Castle. It took two hands to hold the plane down at full throttle. The 160 and 20-08 prop were amazing...at least for a few seconds. It will take two people to hold the plane back with both engines going at full speed. That big motor your thinking about might be overkill...not to mention the extra weight it would bring. The the one Eflite 160 engine drew 72 amps, 42 volts, and created 2676 watts according to my E-meter. Impressive I think, but won't know how impressive until the plane flies.

So? Any given plane may have different threads running...one of those you mentioned is all about running a freewheeling prop, but hasnt been posted in since AUG 2010.

Kahlog - I like your name, makes me think of Klingons from Star Trek – bad ***** warriors! Ok…that info you gave me on that electric motor I spoke about was outstanding. I may do the 100cc motors on 4-bladed props.

Jim – Two people to hold the plane is what I’m talkin’ about. I want my baby to be a turbine on props. I’m into overkill – can always throttle back. It’s all your fault, Jim; you and your sweet video. Can’t wait to see yours airborne. My plan to maiden mine with 4 to 5 other birds on the same day will probably happen late this year; had/have a minor medical setback.

What would the 160 be equal to in gas: 20cc, 30cc or more? I'm thinkin' 30cc since a 30 swings the same blade: 20x8.

Jim, if/when you have time, full power just one motor and record the rpms, please.

Jim, are you using 10S or 12S lipos? And what charger are you using to charge them puppies? I've seen chargers only up to 10S at HobbyKing, etc; makes me wonder what folks are using for larger lipos.

I can give you a comparison: I had an Eflite 160 in my Hanger 9 150 size P-51 and swaped it with a Saito 36 gasser. The 160 pulls harder than the Saito!

The Saito puts out around 3.5 HP with an 19-10 prop and the Eflite 160 puts out around 3.75-4 HP with a 20-10 prop.

I think this plane would fly fine with two Eflite Power 110 motors. If you wanted you could put a 160 up front and 110 in the rear. That's what I would do then shut down the rear motor once you are at altitude to save battery, only problem is they need difference battery packs.

I would just go with the two 110s on 4 x 4S packs (5000 mah or larger). You might still be able to shut the rear motor off with a 110 up front. Those motors put out like 2000 watts each. 1 HP = 750 watts, so you have over 5 HP. That's more than two G-38s (or close to it).

Ty, as usual great work. I can only use the seat back and the control panel. The Al Masters kit doesnt lend itself to a full cockpit without compromising the strength of the fuse. how much for a full kit?

Now that’s some awaking news you just laid on me – I had no idea since my only dealing with electric is a sail plane and my DO 335 “cute” joke from Nitroplanes. That’s powerful stuff, but I’m still into maximizing the max but going with twin 100cc equivalents would be a tad much, not for me but for the plane – may rip it apart. If I go electric, I guess the 160s will work; if I want more power, I’ll just fly one of my twin turbines that’s if I ever get around to building them puppies.

Jeff, so help me out a bit more with the batteries and ESC. If I go with E-Flight’s 160 motors on front and rear, would I need the Phonix 160 ESCs by 2 of course to run them with no worries? Also, 12S batts puts out more power than a 10S or 4 4S tied together – correct?
