Default Jet Legend F-16 1/8 "Ace in the Hole"

Well got home from work today and the big brown truck left me a nice surprise. It was my new Jet Legend f-16 1/8 "Ace in the Hole" I ordered it from Mike at the Global Jet Club. The thing is amazing. The custom paint job is awesome! Just one tiny skuff near the canopy but no biggy. I was worried that something was going to happen in transit but it looks to have survived the coast to coast trip. Still waiting on the landing gear. Had the doors installed by Mike's crew. A very nice install. He even included a set of sidewinder missiles and one of his center tanks. I plan on doing a build thread on it so here are some pictures about 30 minutes after i got it out of the box.

Mike, Are the rudder and ailerons glued? I cant tell and dont want to yank too hard on them to find out. Thanks

Rich

Rich,

Congratulations on your new JL F-16 1/8 scale. starting a building thread would be very nice and helpful.
I have JL F-16 in TB scheme with no instructions at all and on top of that the scale gear was not fitted with various tubes Y connectors and restrictors.
I really don't know how to start and would welcome all the help i can get.

Regards.

Hi Rick and Dany,

I have the newly designed L/G from Jet Legend on my F-16. It works great on up/down. There are some problems with the axle joints, They are not clamped tight enough. Maybe you need to loose them up and put some loctite or they will slip off the struts. My landing is quite gentle but when I apply the brake the right axle joint just come right off. See photo.

I will post more photos of my installation later.

Rick, our crew made some laser cut parts for the housing of the fins on the bottom, so yours are removable. Yes, they glued all your control surfaces with hysol too.

Mike, I could not find the laser cut pieces for the fins in the box. do you have drawings for them? how about drawings for that tank tray setup you showed me in the pics you sent me? If not dont worry about it i can fab something up myself. Thanks for the tip on the landing gear. How was the vertical with the P-60. Im going to be getting a new P-60SE sometime in the near future for mine. I might opt for the kero start option as well. Thanks again Mike.

Hi Rich,

Look around for a small pack of plywood plates that look like early moon. They should be in there.

About P60, the vertical performance is not very good when the plane is fully loaded with fuel, T.O.weight is 22lbs on a 13 lbs thrust class turbine. As the fuel burnt off (big tanks, 5 minutes after the flight), it will climb better. I plan to add a P70 on it later. After discussing with a bunch of fliers, we all feel that this plane would be best fit for a Wren Supersport 17lbs or similar. I might also have placed the engine too far from the exhaust bell mouth (about 30mm) this might be the cause of lack of power. Will change it to 15 mm instead.

Mike, i double and triple checked the boxes and found no mounting plates for the fins. Is there somewhere that indicates the correct position to cut the bottom of the fuse for these fins? I havent done much work on it yet. I did install the missile rails and started to build and paint the sidewinder missiles. Should have the missiles finished up tomorrow. Will post some photos when i do so. Im waiting for the electronics to come in and there is actually very little to do. Here is a list of what i will be using

Rx: AR9100
Tailerons: HS5985
Ailerons: HS5125 (compartments are incredibly thin. Was hoping to use HS5245 but they are too thick. Others are using the 5125s with success)
Rudder: HS5245
Steering: HS85MG
Valves: HS81
Batteries. Two 6v 1650mah Nimh set up as a redundant system

What type of flight time did you get with your extra tank added. Im debating on weather to use that or not.

Can someone take a picture of the main geear door cylinder lcoation? I actually found it a long time ago, and stopped working on the mdoel for a while. Now I can't get them to work, they keep tripping on the main gear wheels upon retraction.

Thanks,

David

Hi Rich,

I just arrived in China with my Viper Out F-16. [] Bad news, the China Custom withheld it and said that they will give it back to me after the Olympic because they are hosting the sailing contest in the city that I stay in. Now I got a P120, my JR 10 and this F-16 Viper Out stuck in their airport storage for a while. They are issuing a temporary flying ban for anything moving faster than 100Km/hr or weigh more than 25kg. They are pretty scared by the torch snatching and terrorism from the radical Muslim Chinese and Tibet riot. I will try to use my "Guangxie (connection)" to get them out in time. Well, they don't know I still have a warehouse loaded of planes to fly around in their background though.

The center tank - I only used 1.25 saddle tanks for 5 minutes of flying time on my P60. The center tank would be better used for P70 or larger engine. you can install it first, but can connect it the saddle tanks as the last tank. You can then decide to fuel it up or leave it empty or use it as a smoke tank later.

David, I will post some photos of my gear doors installation. They work great and won't tangle with the landing gear.

Mike,

Could you also post a couple more photos of the gear showing routing of plumbing on gear itself order not having tubes getting in the way while gear is in motion.

Thanks. Dany

Mike,

Thanks for the photos, but actually what i was looking for is picture of main and nose units showing installation and routing of tubes on the units themselves as i have received my gear without installation of tubes/connectors/ Y/ air throttles.

Therefore, photos of the gear (rear view, i presume) would show those details.

Thanks for your help.

Best regards.

Mike, Definitely dont have those fin pieces. Is there any chance of sending a set with my landing gear? That really stinks about the customs issue. The olympics are so far away. It seems silly that they would do something so far in advance. Hopefully you can use your connections to get them out.

For power i think ive decided on the P-60SE with the Kero start option. Ive read elsewhere on these boards you can have jetcat bump up the max rpms to 170k from 165k to gain an extra 1+ lbs of thrust.

David I will post some photos of the gear door cylinders when i get home tonight. I dont have any tubing installed yet so it might be easier to see where they are.

Dany If my landing gear comes pre-plumbed i will get some up close photos and try and diagram it for you. I hope to have it soon.

Mike I actually need to see the lcoation fo the air cylinder on the actual bulkhead. It seems I have pretty look to what you have but my cylinders touch the wheel.

Can you post a shot of the former with the cylinders attached?

You have a really neat install.

Hi Rich,

OK, I will make sure that they go together with the F16 L/G sets to you. Here are some photos of my center tank installation. (pictures taken earlier)

David, the China custom took away my F-16 so I could not take pictures of these retracted gears and doors unfortunately. They even X-ray these AIM-9s 3 times to make sure that they are not loaded with rocket fuels!.

I just had a FLY EAGLE F-16 custom-painted in the "Ace in the hole" too. The landing gear is not as scale as JL F-16, but it's a bigger plane. I plane to put a P120 in there if I can get it back from the custom.

Hi Mike, Your ace looks good. Thanks for including the pieces with the LG. Are you running your saddle tanks in parallel or series?

David. I attached some photos of the main door cylinders. If you need anything else let me know.

Not much else to report on my end. The sidewinder missiles are cool. Just awaiting some final paint and gluing of the fin tabs. Attached the missile rails was straight forward. Drilled a 1/8 inch hole all the way through and then 11/32 inch half way in order to seat the head of the screw. They attach very solid with this method.

Thanks Rich, I noticed where my problem lies. I have to move the cylinders closer to the former and away from the wheel, no problem.

We are using the same cylinders looks like.

Again, thanks a lot for posting the pics!

Thanks for the photos of the location for the main gear door cylinders. That will help determine the tentative placement of the cylinders in my JL 1/6 scale Falcon. It will be a tight fit for me as I have the Jet A-1 cylinders which have a large diameter than the one shown in the photo.

Just another example of how helpful the various threats can be to others shopping for answers. [8D]
