I got these buggies from a hobbyshop in Vancouver - British Columbia, Canada where I used to live. When I moved here to the US these came along with me. Last I heard that store closed in 2001 due to stiff competition and the internet..... []

Side by side comparison of the RS Golden Arrow and the Nikko f10 RHINO Frame Buggy. In the background just barely seen in photo is the buggy that changed everything in r/c off-road racing - The Tamiya Hotshot 4-WD buggy.

I got bored... So here's a few pics of the Radio Shack Golden Arrow Buggy mods I made.

Hobby grade electronics include a Futaba 27 mhz receiver with BEC, Small & compact Futaba steering servo and a good quality ESC with reverse. I got rid of the old circuit board and put in the new stuff. You will need the basic tools for the hobby plus the trusty Dremel to remove some excess plastic to fit this classic buggy with the upgrades.

Hey!
Ijust scored a Golden Arrow at a garage sale, and it was pretty complete and intact.
However, the circuit board has a burnt lead that controls the rear wheels.

Would anyone know where I can get a replacement board, or would anyone be able to make suggestions on upgrading it?
I would even consider doing a mod. All other components and the motor work.

GulfstreamI, does your motherboard still work?

Thank you in advance!

I would suggest you do a Hobby grade electronics installation on your R.S. Golden Arrow Buggy. More speed, increased reliability and more fun. The stock electronics board is limited to mild mod 540 class motors and it basically just turns the motor "ON and OFF" . It has no low speed option if you want the buggy to run to a slow crawl. (perfect for sneaking up on squirrels and your pet cat.)

Thanks for the advice! I am pretty new to RC but Iam willing to give it a shot.
Did your receiver come with a new remote or will the old one work?
Also, any special instructions for wiring in the receiver to the speed controller?

Thanks again!

Hey,

A guy on a different forum told me I should get this stuff:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXAXT7&P=7

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...I=LXDEL3**&P=0

Does this have the receiver built into the servo?

Thank you again,
Stoddmi

Welcome to the RC world bud!

You can use the stock R.S. remote withe the hobby grade ESC and receiver. The brushed type ESC's will plug in to a Futaba type receiver, no modifications necessary. Make sure the three (3) wire pugs are Futaba compatible. You can use the old motor wires and attach hobby grade connectors to link it up with your ESC.

Hows it going gulfstreamI? I have to say that all the mods you just performed on the GA took a crap in the first 5 minutes of use. The ESC went up in smoke and the receiver you installed works BUT to anyone looking to do that similar mod doesn’t work properly with the stock transmitter because you can’t switch the direction of the steering. In other words if you swap out the cars electronics for an ESC and receiver the throttle works fine but turning left the car goes right and turning right the car goes left. If you want to go this route you'll have to ditch the stock GA controller and use another transmitter.

Thanks for letting me know about the equipment you have! Let me know how much you are asking.

I'm kinda interested in doing the hobby level upgrades. However, this is for my 8 year old son.

The links Iposted were for a Hitec Aggressor 2-Channel AM/1 HS-311 Servo and a DuraTrax IntelliSpeed Auto-Sport Forward ESC.

Together they are $65 + shipping at Towerhobbies.com

The Hitec agressor includes:
One Hitec Aggressor 2 channel AM 75MHz transmitter One HS-311 servos One HAS-2MB Super Narrow Band AM Receiver w/crystal One Switch Harness w/BEC connector One Dry 4-Cell battery box One Frequency Flag with channel clip One instruction sheet for radio

The Duratrax description states:

Auto-Sport Forward with Brake

Affordable for first-timers – powerful enough for motors down to 20 turns! Super-simple to set up and ideal for stock racing and sport drivers.

Regardless let me know what you guys think and thank you both for the help!

HAHAHA I'm not slow, I know if the buggy is coming towards me that it turns the other way! NO if you turn left it went right and right it went left. I worked on it for almost 2 hours trying to fix the issues and no matter how I configured it or moved the servo it still turned the wrong way. I was running it with the body off and on my kitchen floor when the ESC crapped out. Oh and it still had the pinion in it from when I got it.

gulfstreamI you can’t flip it upside down because the angle of the steering arms is too great and does not work properly no matter how much you try to adjust them. Plain and simple it won’t work with the stock remote. Like I said I worked on it for quite a while trying to make it work and had two different hobby shops work on it and the long and short is if you plan on putting modern electronics in this buggy due to the way the transmitter sends its signal and the way the servo has to be mounted just doesn’t work together so a new transmitter is needed for this mod. As far as the battery goes everything was the way it was when you sent it and if you actually paid attention to what you did you would have seen that the servo was operating the wrong way and the battery was a standard radio shack golden arrow battery so whatever mods you did just didn’t work together and that’s ok.

Hey guys after finding this thread I went and dug my Golden Arrow out of my storage unit. Everything appears to still work great except after sitting on the tires for so many years in a hot storage shed the rubber has degraded and the tires are flat now. I tried to remove the tires from the rims but they seem to be glued on. I went to Radio Shack to try order the replacement tires but they cant get them anymore according to the guy who was working there. So could anyone make a suggestion on replacement tires for my Golden Arrow Buggy, I need all four? I would really love to fix this up for my son, I know he would just love it like I did when I was his age LOL.

No dice man there arent any replacement tires for the Golden Arrow. The best bet if you want to keep it simple look for a set of rims and tires for a Tamiya Grasshopper, Hornet, Fox, Wild Ones and basicaly any other 2wd platform from Tamiya.

I have two of the Golden Arrows! One remote has broken ant. One buggy has a missing ant. Dusty, but I bet if someone took the time they could get them to work! Or great parts buggys! I'll sell them for the right price. Make me an offer!
