Scale finishing my BVM Hun

The area behind the ejection seat is a bit of a mystery to me.. I have no access to a full size example, and this area seems never to have been photographed.. I believe this is where the F-100 Pressure Regulator is fitted, whatever that may be (perhaps someone can enlighten me).
BVM supply this vac formed part to go in this area.
I dressed it up a bit using some bits of plastic, wires and other do dads.
Applied some rivets, and sprayed some silver and matt black, on to age it a bit..

Finally time to fit the entire cockpit together.. The glass was glued in using a combination of 5 min epoxy and 400 canopy glue.. I use the rare earth magnet system for canopys. This is THE BEST way to do it. For me anyway.
Then the Details 4 scale gunsight, and the finished pressure regulator were glued in with silicon. And finally the cockpit tub with pilot were installed.. The end result is pretty cool, and it currently lives on top of the TV as my current “art” project.
Photographing the finished cockpit is not easy due to reflection/glare.

One more thing done.. The Details 4 Scale arrester hook.
The full size F-100 were not originally fitted with these, but this hook was retrofitted to all operational aircraft. It was only used in an emergency, i.e. wheel brake or drag chute problems. (F-100s were never intended as a carrier A/C). The point guard (triangle shaped part) was also retro fitted after a few inadvertent hook up accidents.. (could you imagine).
The D4S parts are all supplied in moulded resin. I fitted these so they are removable. They are screwed to little wooden blocks glued inside the fuse. ..
To age and weather the parts, first they were painted metallic silver, then 2k gloss clear coated. After the clear had cured, a coat of dark metallic (grey steel) was sprayed on.. This was then sanded back to expose some of the underlying silver metal..
The effect is pretty cool, quite realistic, and easy to do..

Thanks DHC.. I am really learning as I go... There are actually some brilliant scale builders in this group. If you search RCU there are tons of build threads with amazing models..
For example this thread http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/rc-j...ld-thread.html by rhkeleke is amazing, and motivated me to finish mine in a scale manner..

I ended up using the Skymaster 1:7.5 http://www.skymasterjet.com/pilots.htm
After the mods noted above in post 50.. Not the perfect pilot, as he is heavy and some what unproportioned.. But was the best I could find..

Dave,
I would suggest you contact Wilson Li at Tailord pilots over in the U.K and see if he can't help you out.

I have had him make me 2 pilots so far for my F-86 and my Wildcat, i have been very pleased with his work.

Hi Roger,
Really impressed with your Hun, but not surprised though, having seen your absolutely immaculate Bandit, which performs so well too. I guess you are using Weatronics radio, a system I still believe to be the safest ( although I love my new 28x, too).
What at engine is planned ? I am using JetCat 180 s in both of my AW Hawks with great success, would ge great for your Hun.
Often thought of building the BVM F100, it flies so well, to compliment my F4 but Hawks kept getting in the way, still flying my two AW Hawks and the Skygate is ready to go, at last !
I wish you the very best for the test flights and that invitation to my Australian friends to come over and be my guests for Jet Power still stands !
Best regards,
David.
(No flying today, we have snow and freezing temps)
PS I believe the device, the pressure regulator, behind the seat is the cabin pressure controller, the F86, same manufacturer, has one just like it, my BVM Sabre is still flying !)

Dave, (and Greg),
Yes, Wilsons pilots very good ... However.... I did actually order a 1/7th pilot from YT, and found it to be too large for the BVM cockpit..
The BVM Huns are supposed to be 1: 6.7 scale!! ! I suggest you check the dimensions with Wilson prior to ordering. .
BTW, Wilson was a pleasure to deal with and his pilots really are top.. I ordered both a 1:5 and a 1:7, I have another project for the 1:7

Thanks for the compliment..
At this stage I am unsure what radio will be guiding this model. I want to use Gyros, and DV4/DX12 has only 8 functions. Some decisions to be made soon...
I have a Munts M200 xbl for this model.. Luv these engines.
I still have a bit of finishing to be done on this yet, but I think 2016 will be the year..
Thanks for the info on the pressure controller.. I assume this is the air conditioning/cockpit environmental equipment..

Roger,
As for a gyro JMO i will suggest that you try using an IGyro3e I have had very good luck with them and they are easy to set-up.
They also have an App for IPhone so you can do all of the fine tuning with the use your phone and bluetooth. No need for a laptop at the field.

So, my F100 finishing has slowly progressed..
The wings are finally painted so now I can get on with the job of completing the fit out and making this thing ready to actually fly..
Finishing the wings meant a lot more laborious work applying rivets and all the other little details. This photos shows the upper surface. Aero-foil tape is applied to all the various service hatches, as per the fuse. This pic also shows the wing fences being constructed from G 10..
Jump to this pic of the finished wing and you can see how effective these hatches look..
Some paint scraped off and grime in the perimeter of the hatches.. ..
As the aluminium foil does not hold paint well, it is easy achieve this missing paint with a bit of tape pressed onto each hatch, and then peeled off removing some paint to reveal bare aluminium.. A clear coat then seals it all in..

Not all the panel lines are moulded on the BVM master. The LE slats have a number of very conspicuous panel lines, these were created with masking tape guide and a broken 509 disk. This is a very effective way of producing straight panel lines.. But you need to be careful not to go too deep.

Wings were painted using Taylor Made base coats, and paint masks for the Stars & Bars.
I used the special car painter self adhesive foam tube to give the soft lines.. This was not al together successful as some paint went under the foam and created additional lines.. Easy enough to correct with an air brush, and as this is replicating what is a pretty rough full size, its not so bad..

These pristine wings now require weathering, from the Sean McHale school of "how to make your plane look very used".. I used artist oils and base coat paint in my fine air brush.
First a good wash of thinned out, mostly black oil was applied to all surfaces
This oil was allowed to dry, and then all most completely removed by using paper towels, but ALWAYS wiping in the direction of air flow.. This oil fills all the panel lines and rivet depression.. Some oil was left on in the certain places where you would expect grime to be, behind the U/C bays, and around the hinge lines.. etc..
I added some detail with my air brush at the hinge points and Slat actuator/line.. This is fairly simple, and really starts to make the wing look realistic.. "Post it" masks are brilliant..
The 45 deg sweep of the F-100 wing can be confusing at times. It is difficult to keep all this weathering parallel, especially when the wings are detached from the fuse..

The wings were clear coated last night, and I want to give them 24 hrs prior to handling . I will put them together tomorrow and post some more pics of the finished items..
