Yep, as Les sez, and you should check the scale rules you are building for. If the model is judged from 10 ft away, and it is 1/6 scale, that's a scale distance of 60 feet. Hardly be able to see any...

RE: WACO YMF

Dash, Solarlac is Solarfilm's paint to match and be painted on Solarfilm films. The Ally paint is ...aluminium based cellulose lacquer, trade name Duco. Nitrate and Butyrate dopes are simply...

RE: WACO YMF

Dash, FWIW, my two Koverall covered models use: Waco, Solarlac (Fuselage) and Ally dope (Cellulose paint) on the wings, all sealed with plasticised two pot (epoxy) clear. Ten years old now and the...

RE: WACO YMF

Well...I did say she could use it...then she put it on the roof of the car so the bag could go on the back seat, then she shut the door, climbed in and started to back out...the cam slipped off the...

RE: WACO YMF

Yep, ever since I found that the local ally supplier has heaps of ally tubes of all sorts of sizes, and he cuts them to meter lengths as well. Cost, compared to 'model' stuff is real cheap. Brackets...

RE: WACO YMF

I have some concerns with that idea...works fine so long as you land on both wheels at the same time. If you land on one side with more force, that wheel will try to go outwards, and simply drag/jam...

RE: WACO YMF

Brass is probably not the best stuff for this application. It does work harden, and will in service when you subject it to vibration and shock loadings. You can reduce the problem with (again!) soft...

RE: WACO YMF

Dash, take the balance answer as a target, get all the weight out of the back that you can, and make the tail rigging work...You can even laminate the tail fin and stab outlines and remove all the...

RE: WACO YMF

As with most things, the more you know, the less you want to go there. My day job sometimes has me writing repairs for gas turbine parts, you'd be amazed what the bits cost, and how time consuming it...

RE: WACO YMF

Dan, most of the wire we use is bent cold. You can tell because every now and then one of the bits will suffer a brittle fracture at the bend...Done it myself when I have bent a leg up without...

RE: WACO YMF

mrdhud, Landing gear wire (piano wire, spring steel wire) is a hardened and tempered high carbon steel, if you use any brazing wire (ezeflow, silver solder, etc) then the heat required to fuse the...

RE: WACO YMF

Miltac, the thickness of the firewall doesn't matter squat, it matters how you distribute the engine mount stresses to the rest of the fuselage. If you can, then make your own mount from ally...

RE: WACO YMF

Sorry guys, I was trying to keep it simple...Full size the mnemonic at the top of the climb was 'PAT', Power, Attitude, Trim. Set cruise Power, push the stick forward and set Attitude (horizon on...

RE: WACO YMF

OK Jaybird, there is no 'nose down tendancy' when power is pulled off, nor does the tailplane have to be producing a downward force all the time, fact is it does not. Trim is not a 'force balance' as...

RE: WACO YMF

Just to add to what Mitch said, balance only affects pitch stability. Moving the balance point back to cure a TRIM 'problem' may result in the loss of the airplane. If you can't get enough elevator a...

RE: WACO YMF

Yeah, always set up the tailplane and lower wing parallel, and both 90 deg to the rudder post, assuming the fuselage is not twisted. Make the upper wing parallel to the lower wing and tailplane by...

RE: WACO YMF

Quite right Dash, if you are using an incidence meter you will have to change the reference angles. The easiest way would be to use the original plan and draw the chord line on the bottom wing,...

RE: WACO YMF

Yep, you got it. But the bottom wing being '2 to 3 deg positive at the chord line'...positive to what? I know we bandy words around, but with this stuff we need to be fairly concise, and meanings...

RE: WACO YMF

Dash, you can't measure AOA's, that is defined as the angle between the wing chord line and the Free Stream Direction, can only be measured while in flight, and is constantly changing, specially with...

RE: WACO YMF

Seems best. I think you will find that, after lots of airplanes and experiments, 28% MAC is the best place for balance. That is, no matter which one of these things you have, balance 28% MAC back...

RE: WACO YMF

3D? 3D? All my airplanes are 3 dimensional, fly in 3D air with my 3D airplane too...never been able to build any other (1D, 2D, 4D...) way. Even the wood I buy is 3D...I guess you guys mean that...
