Hi Guys, I have a Saito 1.5 now and want to place it on a A. Works 260 Pro...that is a profile airplane. I had a 22cc gas engine on it but would like to try the Saito 1.5 on it. It will be run with a spark ignition from Adrian at CH ignitions. Do you think it be ok as far as power & vibration goes? Thanks Capt,n

If you run methanol through that on spark, it would really crank!

You can make a cam timing tool out of an allen wrench & some plastic push tube. When you're ready, I can post some pix.

Capt i think the 150? would sound good flying that aeroplane,or any other.Would be hell good fun if you have only flown it with a 22 gas engine

Hello,
I just acquired a used Saito 82a, so I guess I can take a number to join the club?

I am totally new to 4-stroke glow engines. Given the engine is used I am doing a minor teardown to see what parts need replaced. The engine has barely run, after removing the backplate, the crankshaft is rust free and the bearings look new. It seems to have been properly stored with after run oil. The intake and exhaust valves look pristine. The only bad thing is that most of the rubber seals seem dried out. The pushrood cover seals are cracked so they will need replaced. Also, I am thinking about removing the cam cover to inspect the cam but unfortunately the gasket set for the A version is backordered from Horizon. Does anyone know if the gasket in kit 82b32 will fit? (I understand this is for the "B" version). If not are there other alternatives?

Any upgrade advise is welcome. Since I am tearing some of the engine down, might as well go through all the replaceables.

A brown paper grocery bag makes great gasket material. The gasket sets the gear mesh and the brown bag is perfect.

The reason you can use less oil with gas is that gas is oily to begin with. Castor oil has a higher flash point than the early synthetic lubes we ran in the '80s. In those days if you got a lean run with synthetic oil, you stood a good chance of frying the engine. So we all used to put in a little castor, JIC. Not sure about the flash point of modern synthetics; but I know that Morgan Fuels still sells Omega.

I hope you're not quoting me because I never said that. All I said was that I used that mix successfully when I ran my Saito 1.5 on gas. Good gravy, quit splitting hairs trying to prove something or other.

BTW did you ever do a write up on trying gas in alky Saitos? It might make interesting reading.

Tiz indeed jim but you've barely scratched the surface.Girlfriend 2.0 comes as a complete software package which also has tears 1.0,jewellery upgrade 6.0 which opens automatically,and mother in law 5.0 which can turn nasty and is unpredictable by nature.In the event of a system crash it automatically drains your bank account.Aaah..the good ole days

I learned this hard lesson from my uncle. Like they say, it is better to learn from others' mistakes. When I want variety or change, I get another airplane/engine or a new job, not wife/girlfriend. A lot less money and trouble. I think the wife appreciates that too.

Castor still has the highest flash point.......unless someone can show otherwise. Also, castor starts to protect with varnish when getting that hot. Synthetics turn to ash.

WHAT?!?! The moderator trying to get us off the subject of revolving girls? For shame! Well, maybe not. When I had the chance, I made my choice willingly and (mostly) knowing the end result. I still like it, mostly.


The problem *I* have had with castor turning to varnish in 4 strokes is that it takes a lot of heat for that to happen - like right at too lean a run. The somewhat richer (~200 rpm) runs with castor lead to the crud that tends to make things like valve stems drag and things go down hill very fast once that becomes an issue. That is what *I* have experienced. While I am positive there are more knowledgeable folks out there who it is great and wonderful for, it just has not worked for me.

I called Horizon to ask if the cam cover gasket included in SAI82B32 (gasket set for 82b) fits the cam cover in 82a. The answer was yes. If anyone else needed to know.

I received the engine gasket set part number SAI82B32. The cam cover gasket does not fit the 82a engine crankcase. I guess I must order set SAI82A32, which is out of stock, or make a gasket out of a brown paper bag as suggested by Hobbsy

I once agreed to work on a OS .48 Surpass 4 Stroke that belonged to a friend from our club. He said it ran but was way down on power. When I took the exhaust manifold off I found that the exhaust port was about 75% clogged with a light brown, gelatinous goo. He had been running it on all-castor fuel. I cleaned it up and it ran fine on a synthetic/castor blend. He had no more probs with it after switching fuel. So, in my book, a little castor is OK. I'm running Powermaster synthetic/castor blend nowadays, no probs.

AAh the perennial discussions about women and castor and synthetic oils. A string could be developed I am sure but with regards to modern synthetics, I use the helicopter oil by Klotz and Cool power in my Ys's and now for simplicity in all my engines. However I am looking at that new red oil Saito are marketing for gas engines as a possible subsititute. And now for a little variety I am taking my other 1/2 to the local hobby shop so she can buy me a new as yet undetermined toy. Catch Ya

We acquired a rescue black lab puppy who has developed an amazing appetite for my bar clamps, trailer wiring, auto battery charger cord, and things of that ilk. So the other 1/2 went to replace my bar clamps and discovered just how badly I had been hurt. Mine were all S&R (you know - Craftsman) and her estimate is over $200! She has interests in doing something else for Christmas . .

I keep telling her we need dog burgers for dinner.
