Have you ever run an FA-91S & if so how would the FA-82 compare to it for power?

No my 182 twin has two 91 cylinders and i like the way it flys a h9 taylorcraft.I normally google for info on what saito engine is being flown in what aircraft and what size airframe and all up flying weight. Then look up the saito engine weight and hp chart.Use some two inch masking tape to attach the five cell 6v eneloop battery to the top of the tailplane and rest the right weight saito fourstroke on the engine beams,if it's roughly in the middle re cg way better than running a lightweight two stroke with added lead up front. With a heavy battery pack back over the tailwheel it will do some weird full power aerobatics, the elevator is very effective at low approach speeds and very easy to handle on the ground because the tail wheel is more effective in cross winds with some weight over it.

I've got an old indoor cat who is 15 y/o.

Senior is right about aiming those bottlerockets. My Ultracote tube is too large. Smaller diameters are more accurate.

I've run both an 82 and a 91 on the bench, but not in airplanes yet. The 91 is going to have more grunt. Somebody like W8YE will come along and tell us all about them.

As far as tach readings go the .91 will have a little more grunt but not much more. As for me, if I had an application for an .82 I'd just use a 1.00. But not everybody is like me.

Old Fart decisions made. Saito 30 in Lanzo Racer 10% nitro for Texaco. Still have to sort a prop probably a Bolly 12 CF and if the Irvine 25 in the Lanzo Bomber doesn't work for Duration I will feed the Racer steroids (about 45%) and drop to a Bolly 10 or 11CF. My mate offered me his run in 30 hence the decision to jump in that direction. He figures if I stuff his 30 I have a brand newt in my collection he can acquire, mecenary b**#@rd. Let you know how it works out.

I'm looking for something that would fit (completely) inside the cowl on 1/5 scale J-3.

Rather than a 100, I would opt for an FA-115. A lot more power in a more compact package.

That would be quite a lot of power for a 1/5 cub.I have a 115 in a 46 size cm pro midget mustang. On the instruction sheet they recommend a 75ax two stroke (max) if you want to turn the midget into a rocket. The funny thing was i fitted the 115 using the method i described above,no lead needed at the tail to compensate, and it IS a rocket. On takeoff there is'nt a huge amount of ground clearance for the large prop so i usually run mas classics because you can shave a bit off the ends without too much drama if you feed the power in to quickly. It's short front to back and heavy for it's size, according to club members it looks and flies like a red lawn dart,no worries if it's windy.

I think the 91s was favoured because it's not as oversquare as the newer saito singles around that capacity. It's about 10% lighter than the 100 and pulls about 500 rpm more strangely. You could always run a flat twin if finances permit.

ps the off tangent reply yesterday was down to a prolonged bench racing session at the end of the days flying. It's an enjoyable part of the day and appreciated by all who partake, plus by that stage i could'nt remember where i'd left my engine notes

pps fnq very much looking forward to your results with the fa30 cheers mate

Pete, if I understand your post correctly you must have had a weak 1.00. I have to qualify that by saying I never ran a 14x6 on the 1.00. The 1.00 is definitely stronger on props from 15x6 on up. In my mind, running a 14x6 on the 1.00 is a waste of the engines superior torque even though the 14x6 is on the 1.00's prop range. That's just me though.

Sorry dave i should have explained it better.I don't own a 91s or a 100.I run an apc14x6 on my 82's they pull around 9 on the ground. On the 115 i usually run a mas 15x8 classic which pulls around 8800 on the ground but will rip the prop tips in a slight dive easily.

I ran a 220 in last year and finally bolted it into the firewall of a 72" percival mew gull by blackhorse i think. It's doable cg wise just have to mount the 24oz tank back 70mm does anyone know if a cline regulater would in any way be likely to restrict fuel flow to the 220? i can't imagine it would just asking cheers

What's up OldFart? This is a nuther OldFart? I got a set of old JR L 401 servos, l'm trying to find out if l can use them on a 6v sys and what tork they are and ALSO! l have a (OLD) Air Hobbies 105 6.4 Cid Tween in a Hanger 9 33% 330. One head is running 100* hotter than the other? l have cooling ducks in it and a baffel. lt don't knock and it runs real good, what do you think, one Old fart to a nother? l use to run a 26X10 prop and l found the manual and lt said to run a 24X12 prop on it. l broke the last one, so l bought a 24X15 and..... well, let me say, "IT WOULD NOT PULL ME OFF THE POT" lol, so l cut off a inch off eatch tip. Pulls a hole lot better! BUT can nn fuger out whats up with this endine? Brison sales them know and l finley found there web site, BUT! there only contact is a E Mail and l have not heard from them yet??? A buddy of mine said," SWITCH HEADS AND SEE IF IT GOS TO THE OTHER SIDE" and l get it, BUT ! lf l miss up the head gaskets l will have a time making new gaskets! I had a BME 102 in this plane one time and I was just wonted to know what the engine temp was one time, "wished l had not looked" it was 380*! Of course l did not have air ducks in it! What u think?

Thanks, you're right the .82 is a real torquer in spite of its short like stroke. I had a 2.20 for a while but sold it because I had sold the huge Cessna 182 I had bought for it. If you go to the C&H Ignition site and see a 2.20, it used to be mine. The 1.15 is a sweetheart of an engine even though it's a tweener engine.

That answers my question. My (CDI) FA-91S pulls a 15 X 5 @ 9700 static. Thrust would be almost 50% more than the .82 numbers posted above.

I'm not looking for speed from the Cub rather unlimited vertical potential for pulling vertical from slow speed or a complete stop on vertical.

This is the type of performance I am seeking from the smaller 1/5 scale Cub W/the FA-91S.

I had a 1/4 scale SIG Cub and planned to use a Saito 1.00. I was advised to use something heavier because the Cub needs a lot more weight in the nose. I have since given the Cub to a fellow club member that crashed his so I guess its a moot point . He plans to install a 30CC gasser.

The FA-115 is the same footprint as the FA-65/80/91S. It's just 2mm taller than the FA-91S & needs 1mm more clearance @ the rear for the carburetor. It's the FA-100 & FA-125 that are "tweeners" IMO.

Fortunately, the World Models J-3 Cub (Wings-Maker) comes W/a clear plastic trial cowl to prevent hacking up the painted fiberglas cowl. I'll trial fit the FA-91S. If there's room, I might opt for an FA-115. If the FA-91S requires the cowl to be cut & the 4mm shorter FA-82 will fit W/O cutting then the FA-82 might have to be purchased.

jeffie8696, if you already have the 100 keep it handy for future projects. It's a great size and power output, ready to fit most 90 size apps that need, (or want) a tad more power. I have 2 of them, one fit into the nose of the Super Skybolt and the second install is planned for the Seawind.

Dan, I just ran the C&H equipped 1.50, the results are at the very least interesting. At 8,850 I let it just sit and run and after about 15 seconds it kicked back, the prop flew into my sons metal framed deer stand, the nuts I found about 20 feet away and 20 feet apart. The prop washer has not been found. It's thinking time, I guess. It sure did run smooth though.

I plan to install it on my Big Escapade to break it in. After that I will probably install it on my Pilot Models 90 size Extra.

You might have to back the timing off a bit. Have you leaned out the HSN yet? Make a reference mark & back the magnet ring off to port about .060" @ the prop hub. That will retard the timing about 2°.

I wish that you had an accurate measurement on the combustion chamber volume. My FA-180 HC has a 2.5cc chamber volume. It doesn't behave like that on CDI , but on GI it's downright ignorant.

Got a stray cat that is peeing on our front door. I am still plotting a response. Might be entertaining. (quote)

I have a prop washer if you need it.

Mark your prop hub where your timing is now.

Re-time it @ about 32° BTDC. If it improves sneak it up 1/3 the distance to the 35° mark to see what happens then. If it doesn't improve @ 32° your problem is fuel mixture.

What prop are you turning @ 8850?

It was a Graupner 16x8, they have pretty wide blades so they give an engine a good work out.
