I have a Saito 100 on my Hangar 9 Funtanas 90, and a Saito 72 on a Graupner Sukhoi 40 - really love those engines...

Welcome to the asylum. I've added you as member number 175.

Why the "Low" number? I found I had a duplicate entry.

[b]kaastrup:

Print the thread as a single document? Yes, it can be done, but you have to assemble it by hand.

To make it as small as possible, go te the top of the page and click "Printable Versxion." Then copy and pase each of the 110 pages into a separate file, then print that file.

As an alternate, send me your email address, I'll send you a copy of "Saito Notes," which is in effect a condensation of this thread, with additional posts from other threads, all on Saito care and feeding.

If you don't like Notes you can delete it and make your own version.

Bill.

On the way, now quickly edit your last post and remove the email address. Having it in the open is a large magnet for spammers.

I should have told you to send it by email or PM to me. Sorry.

some of us like to fly SCALE and climbing better than the real plane isn't scale. The real Cub's manuevering capabilities were limited to pretty much just flying. You could loop one if you dove into it but it wasn't recommended. A Saito 45 or 50 will fly it very scale like. Even the 50 will pull a loop from flat and level which the full sacle Cub can't do.

Bill,, easy one for ya here I hope. My FA.72 was serviced last season and has been run a few times this last winter. Now that it's warm here again I've flown it 3 or 4 times in the last few weeks. Last Weds it was just fine and I made three flights. This past Sunday is another story. I first noticed it while climbing vertically and while in a hover. It started getting weaker and each flight afterward (2 more) it got worse. Also the engine temp was overly hot on my last flight. So I packed it up and flew another plane. Am I just in need of a valve adjustment ? I haven't adjusted them since getting the engine back from Saito Service.

Thanks in advance !!

I had to share this with this club. I just scored a gem!!! A NIB Saito FA-45S. This is a pretty old engine, I estimate 15+ years. It predates the old black and gold boxes. This box was blue and light yellow in color. You all might have seen it on the Ads section.

I just don't know if I should keep it mint or run the hell out of it. Any opinions?

[b]Kurt:

As a quick guess I’d say your FA-72 has eaten the o-ring on the intake. Going to pot in 20-30 minutes running time is the way that usually shows. Valve adjustment shows up much more slowly.

If you look at the upper end of the intake pipe you probably will se the thin aluminum washer turned into a cone, might even be pushed back on the pipe past the end of the smaller diameter section.

Strangely the FA-82, even using the same part number back plate, doesn’t have the vibration problem – the carb starts vibrating and it literally hammers the o-ring and chews it up.

The only “Fix all with no exceptions†cure I’ve found is two turns of 0.022†safety wire around the cylinder and the intake pipe, right where the pipe comes out of the carb. Pull it tight and tie it off, no more trouble. Do be sure to replace the o-ring and the aluminum washer before you put the wire on, of course.

Haw.

I haven’t tried a Zip-Lock, one might work as it doesn’t get too hot there.

One other possibility is that your temps and humidity is going up during the day...as you fly. It happens to me here in Alabama. I sometimes have to richen the engine as the day gets hotter on my .72.

Bill, the fix that I tried by using epoxy in the backplate bolt holes in the crankcase seems to be holding up. It still runs fine with no indication of the bolts backing out like they were doing. I think that was what was allowing my manifold to vibrate since the condition appears to be fixed.

Thunderchild

F-1 Fuel Filter:All $9.75 SAI50109

Go to the parts listing for almost ny Saito engine at Horizon Hobbies, the filter is included on the first page of parts.

I like this filter. A bit pricey, but it really looks nice.

I think it looks neat too. I like the fact that you can see in the glass bowl just like the big boys.

Neat! [8D]

The 45S was the last run of the Saito 45. Late 90's sometime. The previous 45's and all Saitos came in a blue box with white and yellow writing. Probably closer to ten years old.

here's another little factoid. If you take off the little red metal decal that says 45S you will notice is says 50 under it. They used 50 cases on the last 45's and used a little thin round spacer so the 45 cylinder fit in the 50 case. I needed need a 45 case which were discontinued. Had a broken 45 case. Very carefully took the spacer out of a broken 45 case and put it in a 50 case. Voila, a 45 that says 50 in the crankcase.

The very first saitos came out in the late 70's and used the little squarish blue boxes.

Why is it that the newer Saitos have the carb offset to the left side instead of centered on the cylinder midline? It makes reversing the carb a bit trickier in some applications because it places the throttle arm directly behind the cylinder. It can also change the spraybar height more radically as the engine is rotated from an upright to an inverted position. I actually see that as an advantage; it makes the spraybar higher relative to the tank center when the engine is horizontal, which would decrease the likelihood of flooding. This presupposes that the tank height can't be changed, of course, and really, the max difference is only a 1/4 inch at best.

Once I actually recieve this I should be better able to tell the date. But I do think you are incorrect about the 45S continuing into the late 90's. I have owned Saitos for a long time and I have never seen a box of this color in the 90's. My "Complete Guide to Saito Model 4/Strokes" book states that in 1988 the FA-45 was updated to the FA-45S. The FA-50 came out at the same time. I beleive that the FA-50 quickly led to the demise of the 45S. I doubt that this engine was even still produced into the 90's.

I am going to look at the copyright on the manual to get a better feel, but I am sure it will at least say 1988.

More info on the 45S. Here is something I found to be intersting.

Notes: The Saito-45S is sold in Europe and Australia but not in the US.
The black colored GK versions are identical except for black paint.

This came from the following site:http://saito-engines.info/body_index.html

Perhaps this engines is from overseas. If this truly was not available in the US, it is even more rare.

Also makes it almost impossible to put an air filter on the carb.. On my .72's the carb sits so close to the mount (GP's) that I can't get a filter on them... ..

With some of the Saito's with the carb not in the center of the rear....

When you turn the engine on its side with the same thrust line, the carb is still the same height.

With the centered carb, when you mount the engine on its side, the carb will be lower and you will need to lower the tank.

This carb to the side deal is also on the 91S engine and they came out in the mide 90's. So its been around a while.
