well i maidened my pitts monster today and the 180 ran grrrreeeat.
got her up and trimmed it out and she flys beautiful, only a problem with ground handling and am in the process of installing my new sullivan tailwheel to solve the prob,(scratched the bottom ofg the left lower wing)wanted to go off on its own[X(]
all in all a great day, will fly it again tomorrow!

Sorry it took me so long to get back to your question.
The pinch test is valid for getting close to the correct IDLE mixture, but doesn’t work well for the HS setting.
At idle a pinch of the fuel hose will give a slight rpm rise before the engine falls off. The final adjustment has to be done by checking how the engine comes off idle when the throttle is opened.
The HS needle must be adjusted with the throttle full open, slowly leaned until peak rpm is reached and then opened to get 300-500 rpm drop.
With experience and a lot of patience you can adjust both the HS and LS needles without a tachometer, but the delay in response of the engine makes it hard for many. So long as you take your time, waiting 10 seconds or so between adjustments, and make them just a little at a time, the engine can be tuned by ear.
The HS needle has no effect at idle if it is open far enough to run at full throttle, and almost no effect until you get ¾ open throttle. Since the LS has such an effect you have to go back and forth between the LS and HS adjustments to get everything right.

I just scored a used Saito FA-65. I am familiar with all Types of engines, but have zero experience with this engine. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Since I am on a budget right now, I don't need to make any mistakes with this engine as I do not have a manual or tools with it.

So I'm at the flying field with my Yellow Aircraft Sukhoi 31 w/ Saito 180. I'm running a Master Airscrew 18x6, rpm's peaked minus 300. I'm using the Saito 6" flex exhaust extension and the standard (new style) muffler. We have sound restrictions and the field marshal walks over and asks me to start her up so he can get a reading...... 96d at WOT. That's too loud, by a bunch, like 6dB. I get all kinds of advice on ways to quiet it down. I put on a borrowed 20x10. It's way too much prop. The engine only labors and I can't find any HS needle setting to make it happy. It also sounds like its detonating badly. That can't be good for the engine. I'm going to look for a prop in the 19's with modest pitch to see what happens. Does anyone else have a recommendation?

I run open exhaust on my Saito 1.00s. I use the older style "curved" header without the muffler. For pressure, I have a "T" connector at the crankcase breather vent. One line runs to the tank and the other vents outside the cowl. The crankcase "breathes" properly and a small amount of tank pressure is generated. Works great!

We took my new, never run Saito .82 apart yesterday except for pulling the thrust washer and taking out the crankshaft and bearings. I thought I would pass on what was found....
The cam housing bolts were barely tighter than finger tight. I think they would have vibrated really loose or out when run on the test stand.
The cam gear, cam lobes, and forward part of the crankshaft had absolutely no lubrication at all. They were bone dry, bare metal.
Thought this would be of interest to somebody.

As stated later in that thread, Marc thought he had it fixed, but it still shows five pages more than we can see.
There is nothing else wrong, you are still seeing all the valid posts. What the wrong page count means is that there are around 125-150 deleted posts in the thread, out of some 2500 posts that's not bad.

I guess not everyone knows, but on April 24 RCU had a major system crash, the storage area for the forum posts was badly corrupted. About 1/2 day's posts were lost when the system was restored from back up.
One of the remaining glitches is the thread indices, that's why "Club Saito" list shows 120 pages when there are only 115 in the thread.
If you want to go in from the thread list go to the right side and click on the button to go to the last post in the thread. That still works.
Maybe Marc and company will get the index repaired soon.

Hello Bill & others - a question about relocating the crankcase breather to the top of the cam housing.
I have a Saito 45 engine - E series - and this version has the breather in the metal backplate. I read in your Saito notes that the top of the cam housing is a preferable location for the breather, thus ensuring more lubrication to the cam & tappets. Given the direction that the cam spins inside the housing, which is the better position: right on top in the 12 o'clock position or say the 10 o'clock or 2 o'clock position ? Perhaps it makes no significant difference but I would appreciate your thoughts.

hello, Im currenly only on page 75 but I need some advise. I cant get my 80 to run worth a darn. Some history, I bought it used and it ran great for 1.5 summers. I live in Alaska and dont fly hardly ever in the winter. It was in a hanger 9 cub and I started having promlems with it. It began to change in the high neddle and then fluctuate. i basically forced it to run and eventually totalled the cub. I put it on a edge 540 arf and it would run the same until about 30 sec at full power it would just die, abruptly. Through different fuels and props I got nowhere. I sent the engine to horizon and had it checked. I needed bearings, connecting rod, piston, ect. They even changed the carb and intake tube. It came back with a good bill of health and they ran it on a 13x6 and %10 i believe. Then last spring I put the zero time motor on this CMP Passion 3d. I got one flight on it last spring and didnt get it back up until today. I dont recall having any problems on that one flight. Two weeks ago i went to get the a/c ready and stripped the glow treads putting in a new plug. So off it went to Clearence Lee, And once it got back i put it together and test ran it last week. Im running %10 omega, but its at least a year old and a 14x6 ma wood prop. This morning It fired up great and I attepted to tach it. It showed about 8600. It was around 9400 last week. It ran good, A little sloppy on the bottem but Im leaning to get the bettrer transision.after the one flight i started to run in consistant at the high end. I tried starting 4 turns rich and lean from there and still no improvement. I then put on a apc 13x6 and got 10300 on the tach and a better transition. it seemed to be running great so it took it up and after about 3min, dead stick. I pulled the needle valve and tried the other I have. Blew out the lines and carb, No change. The last attempt to run it, I peaked it out, It statred to fluctuate and then it abruplly stopped, and the muffler was smoking. the motor was very warm to the touch. At that point I packed it up and headed for home. Nows the questions..........
Do I need to put it apart and go through it again? the last time it did this the bearing were T.U.
The exaust is close to black, does that mean its making metal?
I do have a .91 on the way to replace this in case the 80 wasnt strong enough, but it had plenty of power on that first flight. thanks to all for any input. Im still working on catching up to the current thread, Joe

Well, I think i found my issue. I got some fuel from a friend which is Byron 15%-20% oil blend. While continuing to read the thread, I found some one with similar issues. I took thier given advise and went back to the 80. I checked the lash on the valves thinking they would be good after being to horizon. They were very loose. I could put in a .005 gauge easily and the .006 would just start to get some tension. I rest them to .0015 on both valves. I thought I had put in the os f plug I took out of it but it was some short plug. I gave it a new os f and fired it up. Running the apc 13x6 it peaked at 10700 and then I gave it 3 clicks rich(10400rpm) I worked the idle to 2500 and with some low tuning and it would idle a good min and still go wide open with no known issues. I hope to fly it tommorrow but the weathers not looking to good.
I hope I got it figured it out. Im on page 85 and Im going to continue til thier gone. Any other help or thoughts are still appreciated. I looked in the exaust residue and havent found any metal yet. Thanks

Just for interest (as I have an 82 in my stable of Saitos) is that 15% nitro and 20% oil in your fuel blend?
