Dave,

I went and looked. There's a little letter B stamped on top of the right mounting lug. My engine is all aluminum colored, except for the valve covers which are either chromed or polished alloy. I still have the box, tools, choke, etc that came with it. The invoice from "Doug's Hobby Shop" in Wendover, MD, is dated 5/28/97. It calls the engine a Saito 1.50S. Cost me $352 & change to my door.

A backfire is an exhaust system explosion caused by an overly rich exhaust on deceleration on older carb equipped engines. Gasoline powered Farmall tractors were especially good at backfiring.
Well said except the farmall tractor bit which reminds me..down south australia red neck popey way is a salt lake(lake gairdner)they use for bert munroe style(bonneville salt flats, the worlds fastest indian, without custer behind him)speed runs and you won't believe it but some lunatic on a harley wide glide has just done 175mph with the standard factory fairing and saddlebags attached, guys got balls of steel.Feel free to read that again.

Thanks Charley, Clarence Lee did not test a later 1.50 so I don't know the lower compression ratio number nor when they did it. I'll do some researching and see what I can come up with.As the guy in Dirty Harry said, "I got's to know".

Pete, I grew up among about 6 Farmall's from 15hp to 83hp. My 1200C Sporty supposedly will go about 124 mph then the ECM alternately shuts down one fuel injector and then the other at 5,800 rpm. I have never revved it high enough to do that, with 79 foot pounds of torque at 3,500 it has power everywhere.

I am going to put the final tuning touches on my OS .56 Alpha and then mount it on a Sig LT 40. If I had a Saito .56 I would be torn between the two. My Saito .62 on a Big Stick 60.

I was looking over the old and early .65 I re-bearinged recently and noticed that it has two letters on the right mounting lug. Obviously I haven't gotten the outside as clean as the inside. If the EF is any indication this is not the first of the .65 engines. Mr. Chinn's test.

I fly mine with an OS 52, and it flies great. My friend keeps wondering when I will pull the wing off doing my crazy stunts. That reminds me, one more battery pack to top off.

Yes sir, that's a Turbo Header, we tried a David Brown 990 one time, Dad didn't buy it, my brother in western Pa. has a Massey Ferguson 35, he mows his runway with it. He has a 1,465 foot runway for his Cessna 182. He only uses about half of it. I've been half heartedly looking for a .60 TS twin, it would be fun to have one. I have a .90 TS, might as well have both. I have an Adrian Paige Super Cub under construction for the .90 TS.

I would love a .60 twin. Use that instead of the 45 on the Citabria. Make that little plane really scoot.

OF, Theres a bike?

Pete- you are giving me the Ducati bug. I saw a video of a Ducati with the camera probably on the front forks doing the Dragons Tail. I was very impressed.

Dave- if you put the OS on the LT-40 you got to go to the OS threads to tell us about it. I vote for the 56, of course.

Here ya go Barry, the best dragon chaser out there, bar none. The KTM 1290 Super Duke. A better kind of Duke.

Which .56?

Sorry Pete, I couldn't help myself, I knew that would bring you out of a sound sleep. I've had a lust affair with KTM for a long time. If I had a second bike it would be 690 version.

Picked up a fg-91, M code today. Going to need some cleaning, and valve adjustment, but overall in good condition. Now I need something to put it on. Also got an OS 91 2 stroke, its seized up, but I think it just needs a soaking in some fresh fuel, it's been sitting in a box for a while. Wonder what I can put that beast in.

I've been working through the parts of the 150, Brown vinegar is great for ferrous material. The pile of "not useable" is growing.

Doesn't the ascetic acid in the vinegar destroy all metals?

Well pick your brain back up outta that pile and get it running, not that we're asking much

Dave has your son traded the yamaha r1 bullet in on an insane ktm super duke? i still fancy italian sorry ducati birds in red,you see them out on the roads while riding, nowhere near as ugly as those orange austrian viking type birds with beards

ps damn good thing those super dukes have sophisticated electronics.A riding mate has a single seat duke (ati) and his handbrake has been pestering him for some footage of his rides instead of just hearing about them so she's gone and and bought a go pro, fitted it to his bike and set it up,cause he's an old magneto and points guy too.Well she's hoping to see some hills and beautiful scenery spud has been describing but all she got was tree tops blue skys and crazy angles.Phnut!!..

pps after you popey

Pete, my son now has 4 of the R-1's, all 4 probably cost less than the SuperDuke. The Guzzi is more my Italian style, the California in particular. I don't care for the naked bike look, it looks like the factory forgot to finish them, The 690 SuperDuke is a single with 73 hp, that's 2.5 hp more than my Sportster.

My good friend w8ye reminded yesterday that I may have two Saito .30's and two FA .40 a's, I gotta go look.

Get an old crock pot that will never ever be used for cooking food, some anti freeze, and slow cook those engine parts. Will take that gunk right off them without hurting the metal.

Default Saito 1.50 Compression Ratio

Been searching the web. According to the sources I've found, the B on my Saito 1.50's right mounting lug means it was made during the second production of engines by the factory. It has nothing to do with the compression ratio of the engine. According to one source, there were no "low CR" engines made for USA import.

It appears that the compression ratio was lowered during the B or C series. You would think there would be more engine test of the 1.50 than Clarence Lee's one test.
