Hi Bill Robison,

Remember back in 7/14 I wrote asking about clicking noises from my .30 when rotated by hand? You were the only one responded.

The clicking came from momentary cam reversals just past lobe peaks, abruptly stopping after taking up excessive backlash in the cam drive gears. It probably is of no consequence when engine is at running speeds. Momentum of the cam shaft should prevent reversals then. The clicking just bothered me. I had to fix it.

Now the problem had been fixed to my satisfaction. I have to put my ear right up to the engine to even hear the very subdued clicks. It took two tries to tighten up the gear mesh sufficiently. A total of .006 inch was removed from the cam box by lapping. I also replaced the rear bearing that was a little rough.

It now feels like a precision piece of machinery, smooth and without the "clackety-clack".

The clackity clack is not a problem since at running speeds it would not be doing it.

Hob

One other thing I noticed on my test stand; my throttle adjustment wire was pushing the thottle barrel inward, overcoming the internal spring. This was causing the HS to go lean. I wonder if this is causing those lean runs we keep reading about. Just one more thing to be aware of. I now wonder if my plane installation was doing the same thing?

I've often thought of the poor linkage arangments that push in on the barrel.

Some engines have so little sloop that it makes no difference but others have a lot of slack.

Here are my two not so indentical twin Saito .30s, the new one came with a prop nut and an eccentric jam nut ala YS. The old one came with the prop nut you see in the picture. The old one also has WRs extra cooling capacity coating on the outside of the cylinder and his, "good for 5 HP" coating on the inside called "Robislick".[8D]

The velocity stack for the 72/82 fits the 1.25. The same o ring fits too.

Unbolt the carb... slide the velocity stack over the carb aligning the holes... and re-install.

Most people put a O-ring in between the velocity stack and the carb.

I saw this somewhere before but I can't seem to find it again. What is the ID and OD of the o-ring?

I went to the hardware store and bought some the same size as was around the intake manifold where it goes in the carb

Correction, that spinner nut came with a ModelTech Cub on which I had the old .30 mounted inverted.
What are those coatings you are talking about ???? The one looks like a GK cylender on a normal crankcase. How did that happen ? What is the inside coating ?

lol... that was tongue in cheek Jett. The coating is black paint. The Robislick is probably just WR's boogers.

I have 3 silver Saito 30's. One I bought used and it had the Saito spinner nut on it like in Hobbsy's picture.

The other two I recently bought new at Hodges Hobbies in Andersonville, GA and they have just a plain hex nut on them. The engines were fress from Horizon.

Never had any trouble with either

JP, I loaned Bill R. my Saito .30 a few months ago to get himslef prepared for a Saito maintainance Seminar. While he had it he colored the cylinder black, the inside coating thing was just a little fun thrown his way. He ain't got no sense of humor so I'll have to call him and splain it to him.

MM, the .40a arrived today, great packing job, best in fact. When I saw where the vent fitting is I remembered that the 2.20 has a boss cast into the same spot but no vent. Thanks MM

Is Saito moving the vent on all of their engines? I would think that this would be a good upgrade for an older engine?

New topic, Props.
What is a good range of props for a Saito 65, vintage 1980, but with very low time, maybe 2 hours.
Plus what RPM should I be trying for?

13 X 6 for the Saito 65. If you don't have room for a 13-6 you could use a 12-7.

VENTS

Saito has been inconsistant with their vents. The 50 - 56 size engine were moved to the front.

The 100 came out after the 72 but has a rear vent

etc

The 1.25 is a rear vent. Also has the black tag with gold '125' on it.

I installed stacks on my .91 and .82 , both engines exhibited less power and obvious lower max rpms even after tweeking them a bit on the test stand. I wonder if the o ring ( from a saito kit ) was causing the problem even though it looked to me like a good fit? Otherwise, I dont know why the difference in performance. After removing the stacks the engines ran a little smoother like originally.

The placing of this vent on the cam housing raises my couriosity. I'm used to seeing about a teaspoon full of oil in the crankcase of the smaller Saitos and about a tablespoon full in the larger ones. I'm going to run the .40a today for about an hour and then pull the backplate to see the oil content. I'll use a Graupner 10.5x6. If I have an 11x5 I'll use it.

I talked to him on the phone Monday. He seemed OK then.

He's sometimes gone from RCU for a few days. He may be on a trip or working on a project?
