Thanks, please let us all know how the spring mod works and how it is accomplished. Some of us (me included), are somewhat mechanically challenged and do not wish to screw up a brand new carb

A question if I may please regarding my stable of Saito engines.
From your experience Bill, could you please advise what you would consider to be the best (or maximum) aircraft flying weight suited to each of these engines in my stable please:
Fa-65 (am contemplating acquisition of a second 65 to build my first twin, so both single and twin config weight recommendations please)
Fa-82a
Fa-91s
Fa-120s
Fa-170R3
Fa-325R5D
BTW, I am still waiting on a full description of what transpired between my friend and the Australian Saito distributor regarding his engine which lost 1000RPM suddenly and got real noisy. Allegedly they accused my friend of tampering with his engine. I have to catch up with my friend to get the story first hand and will keep you posted.

Saito also made it in a rear induction version which I also have. These were imported by Hobby Shack when the company was the saito importer and distributor.

I checked the gaps on the tappets and one was pretty far off. I closed the gap but have not started it yet to see if it did any good. I will check the fuel tank height to see if it's higher than the carb. I have beeen leaning the engine out but it runs the same either way. Too lean or too rich. There is no midpoint at all. I'll start it up and see how she goes then.

Ok guys, here goes. I have a friend that just purchased a new Saito 2.20 from a LHS and out of the box the engine refused to start. He removed the valve covers and the pushrods were off of the rocker arms. The rocker arms were losened and put back into place and the valves were reset to spec. Upon trying to re-start the engine, it popped a couple times, started and ran for about 30 seconds and then quit. The valve covers were removed again and the pushrods were off again. After a call back to the LHS he was told that the engine problem was between him and Horizon Hobbies, so a call was made to Horizon and the rep there told him that since he purchased the engine from a LHS that he could not return it for a refund or a swap-out for another and to return the engine for them to reset the valves and it would be returned to him.
What do you guys think of this situation? Sorta has the implications of a "catch 22" deal to me as we are sure that the engine will only do the same thing again. Who needs a 500 dollar paper weight???[sm=angry.gif]

If they came back out you did not have them adjusted properly, not even close, unless you ran it at 13,000 rpm or something. It sounds like a fish story to me. They don't just come out.

It wasn't me that did the adjustment, but I can assure you this, They WERE adjusted properly and the engine never even got past a high idle, much less 13,000 rpm!!!!

Horizons normal policy is to ask for a copy of the receipt be sent with the engine, they'll give you a Return Authorization # and fix it, no questions asked. My .50 needed a new cylinder when new, it was back in 5 days. The HobbyShop was not involved at all.

I think that Horizon and the LHS are being perfectly reasonable.
In the old days, when we paid list price for everything, the LHS had enough wiggle room financially to accept problem products on return, replace or refund the customer's money and then return the defective product for repair or replacement through their distributor. Some hobbyshops will still do that today, if they have enough business to warrant doing so. Unfortunately, many do not do enough business to absorb a $500 engine and wait for it to cycle through the repair process. Most are lucky to be open at all.
Being a good consumer today means that you do not try to fix the problems yourself (adjusting valves is okay) and that you return it to the warranty repair center ASAP.
Our problem is that we expect a small hobbyshop to behave like a large department store. It simply cannot be done with any regularity.

Send it back, you can be rest assured that Horizion will not only fix it, but run it and give you a full report on what they found. I have had nothing but good experiences with them. They have repaired my engines for little and sometimes no charge at all. They are very fair

I find it hard to believe that Horizon said it was the Hobby Shop's problem. I was in the business for years and the standard deal was to send the engine back to the manufacturer or distributor or his authorized facility for any warranty or repair work. It said right in the instructions DO NOT RETURN to retailer but to sent to authorized facility. Sometimes we would take back an engine with problems but usually no unless it was our brand. With other brands like OS or Saito, the customer was directed to the corret facility.

Horizon has made your friend a decent offer; I don't know why he is complaining. I had a problem with a part and horizon was more cooperative than I had a right to expect.

I have a Saito 45 engine & really enjoy using the dear thing. Lately, I am considering purchasing a Saito 65 - it's intended use will be in both sports type & Old Timer planes. Wondering if any owners of the 65 can confirm it is just as sweet to run as the 45.
