Is it me or is the amount of castor varnish on an engine deceiving as it relates to the amount of runtime on a particular engine? I noticed my .91 was dingy on the muffler but the rest was ok at 2 gallons, but I saw another Saito running an 80/20 synth/castor blend with about 1.5 gallons that looked like the castor was poured straight onto the muffler and engine.

The muffler on the left of my 1.30 is from my 1.00, the 2.20 2nd pic and .56 third pic., I sealed the 2.20 muffler with Teflon tape soon after starting the break in and the .56 muffler before running. On the .56, no oil came out of the joints but the muffler still has stains, where oh where do they come from.

Hobbsy, I saw a similar pattern of residue on my mufflers until I sealed up muffler bolt thread. I apply some high temp sealant at the end of the bolt before putting it back into the muffler for final assembly

Tom that is for the large carb option, it is a system that pressurises the tank by admitting air into the crankcase and trapping it with a check valve and then a needle valve partially restricts the crankcase vent. I found that the larger carb works far better with an IronBay regulator. I need to re-do that so I can get some real numbers from doing it each way, and compare them to the stock carb.

Here is the ride I selected for my new .56GK, it's an Apache III from PSP, $99.00, the black spinner came with it, when I pulled the spinner out of the box I gave it a toss toward my scrap wood box thinking it was plastic and a no no for the Saito. It sounded odd when it landed so I gave it another look, low and behold I took it out of its bag and snipped it with my finger nail and it rang like a bell, it is a metal spinner and back plate. I still have to mount the switch, wrap the receiver and battery and re-install the pilot, he goes on top of the radio stuff.

What is the best way to clean an engine of castor varnish and carbon besides cooking in antifreeze overnight?

Regarding any cleaning method, does it require that the engine be completely disassembled? I'd prefer to just leave the engine together, though I don't mind taking off the rocker covers.

I'm sure it is in this thread somewhere, but the search-within-thread function isn't functioning.

RVM, what I do is a complete run over with denatured alcohol for all my glow engines and gas engines, the only items that avoid contatc with alcohol are the non solid metal items, like o-rings gaskets rubber joints etc, then blow out the entire engine with air.

Stubborn stains are usually delt with Acetone, if that fails I just go to ace hardware and pickup gunk remover or industrial grade cleaners and clean off with wipe down as opposed to spraying it on.

Once done a rub down with after run oil with a clean cloth and drying it off finally with clean clothes.

Call me nutts in maintaining my glow and gas engines in that form, but isnt it nice to look at once your done and recall the first day you took out of the box ?

I know my Saito 180 GK still has that sparkle.

SAITO 150 will not fire up

Broke spray bar on my SAITO 150 during a rough nose-landing. Spray bar on carburettor broke apart. Replaced the spray bar and high speed needle with new one. Now the engine won't start up anymore. Any ideas what went wrong?

Open up your valve covers, and see if your rockers are still working as they should? Also, check if the intake manifold is properly sealed against the cylinder and carb?

I'm going to guess that pictures is of a 36cc engine, so it looks like they will be starting to make powerplants for giant scale now. I just hope they're as good as their glow engines!

This will take out the castor varnish too?

I bought an engine used and it has less than 2 gallons through it. It's got a lot of castor gunk on the muffler, and a fair bit on the head, especially around the exhaust manifold (good sign in my opinion). I just want to give the engine a thorough cleaning, and was hoping that whatever cleaner I used would clean the inside of any possible carbon deposits etc. The seller used afterrun, but only during the winter months, and didn't fly it often, so I am wanting to get it nice and clean before I run it. If the crock pot method with antifreeze is the best way to accomplish this, then I'll do it, I was just hoping to find another way.

With Dawn, could I just open the rocker covers, open the throttle and dump it in? I'm guessing a very concentrated mix of Dawn and water would be the appropriate way to do this, or just straight Dawn?

Could I just get a tub of denatured alcohol, drop it in and let it sit for a bit without having to take out the silicone, gaskets, plastic etc.?

where can i order a the carb housing for a saito 125 as the current one is in pretty bad shape because of recent crash, well mostly the place where the high speed needle goes into is bent and does not hold well. Horizon says they will have them sometime in january??
