My .80 GK must be that exception to the rule, Bill. There are a couple of places on mine where the finish is chipped without damage to the underlying metal, and not in a spot where you would expect wear, as on the mounting lugs. It looks like a baked on finish thet has not bonded well, just a few very small places on the edge of cooling fins and on the crankcase. I don't really care, and as good as the black and gold looks, I don't think it's worth the extra $30 or so you have to pay for it, and won't buy another, unless it's a good deal on a used one (I gave $105 for the one I have, and it runs better than any of my other ones). It MIGHT be powder-coated, but I don't think it's an anodized finish.

Hey Bill...remember that old 80GK cylinder of mine that you opened the spring pockets on (in?)

I "hot tanked" it in the crock pot 'o antifreeze and scrubbed it w/ a tooth brush and a lot of the black came off?!

I think it looks like a powder coat, or enamel perhaps? By looking at it closely, the coating looks to be much too thick to be anodizing?
Mine is a mid-late 80's vintage high compression version...perhaps the newer ones are anodized?

Anyway, now I have a "custom" black crankcase/ nat. alum. cyl. version too

The gold on the rocker covers is kinda worn and chipped though. Any way to freshen those up ? (besides replacing )
Maybe I'll strip it off and just buff 'em?

Your experience is not the same as mine. I've never had any loss of color that was enough to notice when "Cooking" the GK parts. Maybe the next one will come out "Bald."

Since yours had the small spring pockets it was an older engine. Maybe at one time Saito did use a surface coating of some kind and the later ones are different. I've never seen anything that made me doubt they use anodizing.

The "Gold" rocker boxes? Polish the ones you have, blow $20 for a new set, or ignore the scratches.

Well...IIRC I saw 9,600 to 9,700 w/ an APC 13X7 on 10% powermaster...
How does that compare to other .80's?

As far as the rocker covers...the first and the last (hmmm, remember that book? Adolph Galland I believe?) cuz I'm too cheap to spend 20 bucks iffn it don't make it go (faster )

All Saito GK engines have a baked coating just like all the literature states, they are not anodized. My 1999 Saito 90 TS is coated and not with an oxide, it's so soft and thick it can be shaved off the cylinders.

To say they are anodized and then coated is ludicrous.

Just got off the phone with Horizon service, they stated that at no time were the Gold Knight engines ever anodized, they have always had a baked coating. The only part that is plated or anodized is the valve covers.

oh yeah....

I have an old 80 that I got used and cleaned up, and another old 120.

The 120 has a straight exhaust (no expansion chamber).
After reading all this, I'm concluding I can get a new cam get a bit more performance out of it?

Taking into account the difference in nitro, I turn just over 10K with a 14-6 MA-K series, and mine will also spin a 15-6/10 Zinger at 9000 on 15% Cool Power. Awesome engine.

Let me Know what you end up powering it with, as I have two other kits to build before I start.[&o] My wife insists that I get my desk cleared in a leisurely fashion before I even contemplate a third.[:-] She was put out when a kit that was supposed to take me a couple of months to build only required two weeks to fly. I was even thinking of a twin for the sound, but I don't want to sacrifice too much performance, I like having ridiculous vertical.[>:]

What kind of plane did you build in two weeks that was to reequire two months? Sounds interesting... I have yet to get the plans in my email but I have requested them. I appreciate the help. Have a 120 Saito to put on it but been thinking of going electric if I can get it light enough. Just want to see the difference between the power systems for myself.

My first Kit was a Tiger 60 that I was supposed to build at a leisurely pace. We figured that between 12 hours a day at work and the rest taking care of her, she is ill, it would take me a while. Not. I used wood glue with the intent that it would slow the whole process down a little. I don't entirely trust CA, even though I know it is just as strong. About a week building, three days fixing a warp I put into the wing, two days covering and two days assembling and tweaking. She now insists that I sleep a little during projects but any more than two hours a night makes me even more grumpy.

Speaking of Saitos, I have fuel coming in the following Nitro %s, 10, 15, 20 and 25%. I will finally do the torque vs nitro% with my Saito .82a and an American Hobby products torque reaction dynamometer. I believe the .82 is the best choice because it is a little below the .91 upper limit of the AHP dyno. This should place the dyno in the heart of its most accurate range. The reason I chose a fourstroke is the small muffler makes negating the weight of a large two stroke muffler unecessary. The prop of choice will be a 14x6 APC.
