Hey guys

At one of the swap meets here in Texas I bought a new never run Saito that was totally stuck. Lonnie and I have been going back and forth about this engine for a while and I thought I would post about it here. Along this engines life someone filled it with something. Whatever it was filled with dried out to a reddish-brown goop. It almost looked like someone melted a crayon in it. I was able to get it all cleaned out with 3 in 1 penetrating spray. I now have a nice engine.

What I want to know is what in the world this stuff was. If I ever find out, I never want it in my shop. My guess is it was some type of oil that dried out to this goop. Any ideas?

you know way back I rebuilt a Chevy small block distributer. in one of the pockets in the casting it had some dried up motor oil and it was reddish in color.

BTW guys, LOL I got thinking LOL Oh No LOL
I have read about people saying their fuel has sat in the jugs for 10, 12 years or longer. and they were wondering if the Nitro has evaporated out of it. in fact, one time I even asked that same question because I have some 30% Heli fuel that has sat. well some one replied and told me that most likely all the Nitro has evaporated. well> NOT, because if all that Nitro did evaporate that UNopened jug would have 30% less fuel in it, even if only 5% evaporated, at 6+oz that would be noticeable in an unopen jug.

The trouble is that CA eats the foam. As does Krylon paint, when I built the Mudducks I sealed the edges of the Foam Core Board with the Superphatic.

Someone put some "ARO" in that engine that hardened.

Jim,

I had several 1 gallon cans of Fox Missile Mist fuel well over 35 years old. All in original steel cans that had been stored in a garage. I have now used all but 1 can and had zero problems. I don't use plastic however for long term storage out in the shed. Metal only. Not saying people shouldn't, only saying I don't

Then again, I am a bit particular about hub pullers too! LOL

EPP and EPO foams will melt when using non-CA safe glue, EVA foam does not, at least not so I can tell.

If your CA eats the foam then you are using the wrong CA. You need the Foam Safe CA made for foam. I have been experimenting Superphatic when I need something to wick into a joint.

Yessir, the guys will crash a foamie, glue it up and they are back in the air in less time than it takes some folks to re-fuel.

I remember I tried CA when it first came out (Early md 70s) and made the mistake of trying to glue to foam wings together. This was before foam safe CA.

I acquired a 1/4 zirolli PT17 needing restoration. Not well stored in a garage. I intend to expose the framing for recovering.
Would topically re gluing the framing be best done with a wicking anaphylactic or fortified epoxy?

well I got the plug cap off. crazy. it would not come off. left it sitting awhile. went back and pulled on it just a tiny bit and it was off. I had a friend tell me once "when crazy things like that happen it's like it was written in the cosmos to happen that way".

That reddish brown residue was air tool oil, I had a couple of gummed up Irvines when I used it.

Yes, the red lacquer AKA air tool oil. I had a pile of brand new engines from an estate. The son said his dad bought them fondled them but never ran any of them. He simply oiled them up with air tool oil and put them away, over twenty years ago. Most every single one was locked up.

Not a single one had ever seen castor.

Been making them too. Both brass and aluminum.
The brass are handy to make stacks do double duty by recirculating crankcase vented oil. A flanged tube soldered to the side. Keeps the engine bay remarkably clean and dry.

The dual plug Black FA-65 is epoxy powder coat on bottom and factory paint on top.

The dual plug 65 still needs its silicone o-ring.
Also will be getting a new vent on the cam housing.

way back I was pumping gas for a living. saw a car pull over on the side of the road. a few minutes later a guy shows up asking me if he could get a cup of gas, yes a cup, told me he only needed enough gas to get the car to the pump. well I said yes, and he went to the pump. well I went out to pump a car and I look over and he has a styrofoam cup full of gas. it was too late it was full. and I stood there and watched that cup disintegrate. out comes the kitty litter.

Hey Jim, we already have a war firing up in the Ukraine. Now why start one here? lol

Really though, you may want to use dino oil gor the first hour or so then go to the sin-thetic stuff.

Really not a huge deal though.

Stihl Ultra is one of the best 2S oils on the planet, it's all I run in both 2S and 4S gassers. For Saito on gas I use a 15:1 mix. Which 120 are you thinking to convert to gas? 120S or 120 fathead?
