I have a Saito 56, runs well, idles well but needs a diaper! It is the messiest engine I have ever run. Using ys20-20 fuel and I know it's a little oily, but WOW. I can't seem to find the source of the oil. (sounds silly, I know.) Actually looks like it is coming out of the carb? Any suggestions/thoughts?

Do you have a piece of fuel line about 3 inches long on the crankcase breather?

hobbsy, yes I have the vent line hooked up, but I wouldn't bet that it's not the problem. There is so much oil dripping that it's dfficult to find the source. I feel a little silly even asking the question, but the answers on this forum seem to be very professional.

Jim:

There is a strong probability the fuel is indeed spraying out of the carb. Do a search here for "Stack," Velocity stack," and/or "Intake stack" for a discussion of the great increase in Saito fuel economy available by fitting one. And even more gain by adding a Bru-Line fine mesh air filter to the stack.

Bill.

PS: The hose Hobbsy mentioned, in my experience, needs to be at least four inches. wr.

There are a couple of other possibilities, too much prop or Low Speed needle still too rich or as Bill suggests, it may lack a stack.

Hobbsy's right again. Until you get the mixture set right it will be messy.

If your fuel consumption is more than 1/2 ounce per minute you are 'way rich. And that's at full throttle. At idle it should run "Forever" on a 6 ounce tank.

Another point - there is no facftory stack available for the FA-56, you'll have to make your own.

I just started flying my floatplane, I have a .72 mounted inverted. Tank height is okay, but I was having a heck of a time starting it, it flooded like crazy. With the throttle open two cliks above closed, and spinning it with an electric starter, fuel dripped out the exhaust. When it finally did start, was very smoky at low speed, and spluttered in the transition to higher throttle, and wouldn't maintain an idle, even with on-board glow going. It sounded rich to me on the low end, and as it's new, I figured a small turn on the low end screw would fix things. Not so, it stayed rich. All my other Saitos were just a tad on the rich side on the low end, but not enough to keep them from running.. So I turned the low end screw in until it seated----over 4-1/2 turns! No wonder it wouldn't idle. I re-set the screw to 1-1/4 out, and it will flip start every time now, and idles at about 1900 rpm.

As you have said, W.R., check everything before getting started. I'll no longer assume my Saitos are at a "basic" setting when I buy them.

The 100GK I recently helped run-in needed three to four turns in on the low end from the factory setting to get to start and run.

Just FYI the .72 stacks work on the .56's... I have two of the .56's which I installed the .72 stack on.. Work great..

Thanks for the information. The FA-56 is a mix of small block and mid block, I've never had one, I'm not sure what parts do and do not fit.

I've got an 82, initial break in on the bench and one short flight (ran out of fuel!). What kind of fuel consumption should I expect when I've got some more run time and it's not tuned way rich?

Really nice engine - bags of power, sounds great, screams of quality :-)

Phil:

Rule of thumb for all Saitos properly adjusted is one ounce per minute per cubic inch, at full throttle, with 15% nitro fuel.

In other words, your FA-82 adjusted properly should give you ten minutes with an eight ounce tank at full throttle - with "Throttle Management" you can get more than 15 minutes on that same eight ounces. This depends on how fast you want to go, the plane size, so forth.

Hmmm... Mine must not be adjusted properly yet. To avoid dead-sticking I usually land after 8 or 9 minutes of mostly half throttle or less flying, with a few excursions into higher throttle levels when pulling out of a hover or going vertical. I mostly fly slow and hover. It will go 10 minutes but not without the risk of running out. My idle still increases when I pinch the fuel line so I think I have some more leaning to do on the low speed needle. I don't have an intake stack yet either since they're out of stock at Horizon until late Nov. [&o]

Doing 3d is usually at a higher than "Normal" throttle setting, just tooling around doing Aresti style aerobatics and shooting touch-and-go landings I'm seldom over 1/2 throttle.

And the stack will help a lot too.

I don't do a lot of 3D. Mostly hovering. I haven't learned too many of the other tricks yet. The .82 with a MAS 14x6 prop will hover my 4-3/4 lb. plane at about half throttle, but of course more or less is used in controlling the hover. I also like to fly around slow doing slow rolls, small loops, touch-and-goes, trying to drag the tailwheel down the runway, and other basic aerobatics at about 1/2 throttle or less, but I admit it is hard to resist cutting all that power loose sometimes. I closed the low speed needle another quarter turn tonight so it's about 1-5/8 turns open now. We'll see how that goes next flight.

I tried all the things you recommended but still I have problems. If I get it to run good sitting on the ground it gets lean when you hold the plane vertical. If you adjust for vertical it's to rich on the ground. Do you think that I could add an Iron Bay regulator in the fuel line and run the pressure a little higher?

Skid:

What you have is commonly caused by having the tank too far from the engine, or having too large a tank.

In either case the Iron Bay pressure system can work wonders.

Thank you. I think I will give that a try. I thought about a VP 30 Perry Pump but I don't know how it would hook up with the two vent holes on the crank case.
