Neither am I . It has never been a "knee-jerk" reaction. It is a contemplated decision.
We have reasons for our preferences.
I have made rings for engines where new rings were no longer available. No reason nor need to buy them from anybody. It had bern convenient, but now the prices outweigh any convenience.
When I needed a carb but could not afford to buy one in 1978 for my Fox 35, I made an exact copy of the Enya carb. It worked as good as any Enya.
Saito mufflers now cost more than many car muuflers, been making them too, or just get a used one.

Fuel? There were plenty of fuel makers fifty years ago. It wasn't a knee-jerk reaction decades ago to mix my own. The components of that fuel over the years have evolved. They were always chosen based on experiences and observation. Never a knee-jerk issue.
Need a special puller? Making one is a good option over buying a universal version.

I like the element of independance. It often gives us options. As opposed to the common, consumer, knee-jerk buying ready to use.

Checking the S&W site, gallons are around $25 and quarts are $11. So much for savings on hazmat fees by buying quarts.

You might want to check out Red Max fuels. A 20 quart case of 15% nitro is $120. Our club members have been using it for 5 years, good fuel.

I mix and store my fuel in five gallon metal cans, but deliver to the users in 2-1/2 gallon high density poly jugs. The prices on all of the plastic jugs have been climbing too. You can bet four, one quart jugs cost more than a single gallon jug.

The jug prices are no doubt out-pacing Haz-Mat fees.....for now anyhow.

Nothing new there.

A lot like around 1980 when the Hunt brothers tried to corner the silver market. Amost overnight the price of photo film, X-Ray film and photo paper doubled, then tripled. This was despite the fact that the silver in the film and paper was only about 10% of the manufacturing costs per unit.
A few months later, silver prices retreated but people like Kodak just left their product prices high.
Likewise with the sugar prices and five cent candy bars etc.

I still have a case of 15% SIG fuel sitting on a shelf. Have not used a drop in 2 years.

Yes BUT:
Buying a 20 quart case from Red Max works out to $6 per quart or $24 per gl. AND the hazmat charges are WAY cheaper on quarts than on gallons.

Updated: I just put a 20 quart case of Red Max 15% in my cart and calculated with shipping it's $176.50. It's still a little cheaper for me to get Morgans fuel from HobbyTown than to order from anyone online. Sure glad I swapped out my larger Saitos to FG's and gas conversions.

I have a pair of APC propellers arriving Wednesday from Horizon, they were supposed to be here tomorrow but were shipped from their California facility, so they will not make Monday. The .25" hole is going to be problematic as they need to be 7mm for the .66 FrankinSaito. I have a B&B reamer with a .25" pilot but it is 8mm. So, I'll have to fudge some way. Pictured is the 13 x 7 it will be accompanied by a 13 x 6.

You may already be aware, the APC 13" props have a modified/narrower blade profile than all other APC sport prop sizes. They will spin up to a little higher than anticipated rpm. The 13x6 & 13x7 work well for the 72. I'm guessing your .66 will turn an APC 13x6 at very close to 10K.

I have a 62 in a plane and a 72 on the test stand, we can compare numbers.

hello all saito expert.
I have a question about ball bearings for the Saito FA-182.
If I look at ball bearings that saito sells, the bearings for the 182 are much more expensive!!.
is there anything special about these ball bearings??
the front ball bearing is of course the same size FA120-220
rear ball bearing is the same dimensions as FA-100-170 and more

Nothing special about Saito bearings. When the time comes, I replace them with hard chrome bearings from Boca Bearings. Way cheaper than buying Saito bearings. Part Number ENK-101. https://www.bocabearings.com/search?w=Saito+182

Note: Boca used to offer rubber sealed front bearings in their bearing kits for model engines but now they don't. If you want a rubber sealed front bearing, highly recommended, then purchase part number MR6000-2RS PS2 as the front bearing and MR6903-ZZC PS2 as the rear bearing.

The 182 has a nice clean midrange because of these accurate fuel metering slots.


I need to run the 182 with this good looking prop and get some numbers. I have no numbers for this engine. It has four Glo-Devil 4c Specials in it.

Looking at your 182 TD cylinders I'm wondering what makes them different than my 200Ti cylinders. Part numbers are different for SOME reason, just can't image what that difference might be.

Are the intake and exhaust valves different sizes on a 182? How about on a 91?

Edit: Nevermind, found the answer on Sceptreflight. The 91S, 182 & 200Ti use the same intake and exhaust valves and they are of equal size.
