Lonnie, how is this for a precise wing saddle, and my only cheat on this plane, the wing bolts were going to sink into the sheeting so I place these one inch by one inch squares of 1/16" ply. That stuff is so hard it literally takes a hammer to dent it.

The trailing edge is only shaped in that area, I've got a ways to go yet

I nearly took a shot at building this Stipa-Caproni, the designers expected it to go fast aided by the Bernouli effect making the prop more efficient. But, it refused to go fast, 83 mph was the most it ever saw.

The Stipa Caproni was a very innovative design. The first of ducted fan concepts and led to many more designs. At least it didn't break in half on landing. The Stipa ducted fan flying wing designs looked very cool too but were never funded for prototypes. Would love to see a Stipa Caproni model powered by a small Saito.

The blue/yellow Stipa Caproni in your pics is a 3/5 scale that had two recorded flights.

lol. a Saito would be the perfect engine for this plane. cause both have the old-time classic look.

Why "almost"? Go for it. Not getting any younger.
Looks like just the plane for a windy day, a barrel of fun.

  • Powerplant: 1 × de Havilland Gipsy III 4-cylinder inverted air-cooled in-line piston engine, 90 kW (120 hp)
  • Propellers: 2-bladed ground-adjustable propeller
Performance
  • Maximum speed: 133 km/h (83 mph, 72 kn)
  • Landing speed: 68 km/h (42 mph)
  • Service ceiling: 3,700 m (12,100 ft)
  • Time to altitude: 3,000 m (9,800 ft) in 40 minutes

  • Take-off run: 180 m (590 ft)

I can't find the fuse diameter anywhere, so far. It will take a lot of ratio and proportioning to come up with rc sized dimensions.

Most folks find a good three view, blow it up, get out the dividers and start scaling

It kind of reminds me of the souvenir Tequila barrel my brother in-law brought me back from Guadalajara years ago!

OK here are the tail feathers on the Sky Raider, covered pretty well, me thinks. The tail wheel has it's own control rod and is connected inboard of the rudder control rod to reduce it's travel. I opted to not make my own tail wheel assembly as the plans call for. It has a nice Saito look doesn't it. Only the hinges are glued so far. I'll remove the tail feathers to cover the fuse.

I borrowed this idea from one of the builds at OSMW

A buddy of mine asked me to post something for sale him. I posted it over on RCG but I got to thinking, what size engine do you think would swing this much lumber?

This DA 70 would be perfect with the prop set at 9 or 10 inches of pitch: https://www.desertaircraft.com/colle...products/da-70

This Saito 73 comes close ; https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...SAIEG73R5.html

Yeah, 60-70cc class 2 stroke gas/80-90cc class 4 stroke gas.

The Saito FA 40-a is anxious, the tail feathers are covered and connected to their respective servos, they're not glued in place yet, today I'll remove them and finish sanding and covering the fuselage. I'm also considering moving the wheels inward and hacking off the excess axle. It sits tall doesn't it?

Dave, what's your prop ground clearance with fuse level?

Are you thinking the wheels will flop around out there at the ends of the axles?

I'll check that prop clearance out in a bit.
Nah, the wheels just look weird way out there, even moved all the way in it will still have Pontiac's Wide Track.

You could affect ground handling moving them in.

Maybe a little.

A tiny bit of toe in and positive chamber, with the full weight of the plane on the gear, takes a lot of squireliness out of that type of gear, especially when flying of grass runways.

Then, there is the issue of crosswinds at touchdown.

Yep, the rudder.

will do. Yea, she’s old and had some time befor I got her. The old bird is a test bed for my B-25. Want the kinks out of the systems before that flies. This set-up is close to solid…. But need to chase down that miss. Getting a tach to see how it dials up and responds to c=some nitro!

Don't expect a lot of power gain from raising nitro content when using CDI with lower compression ratio engines. You really don't need nitro at all with CDI to have a great running engine. For many that's one of the attractions ie cheaper fuel.

That said, engines with higher compression ratios, eg early Saito 65, 80,150 and 200Ti, will see a more significant power increase with higher nitro content when used in conjuction with a more advanced static timing angle.

Give it a test run with nitro and let us know what you find.
