Aidan, still have time to ride that motorbike and you live in a marvelous country for riding!
Not only that, there are a lot of vintage British bikes around that cam be a load of fun on the country roads. Back in 2003 my buddy Mike and I were riding in Manitoba CA. We met a fellow on a Honda 1100 , he happened to live in my hometown back in Michigan. He was on his way back home from Alaska. Turns out he only rode for two months before taking the trip. He was 70 years old!
I started riding the British twins at age 14. Really got involved, buying basket case bike mostly, owned around a hundred over the last sixty years, often 8 at a time. Many years, motorcycles were my primary transportation year round. Out of all those bikes, I never had a green one unti 2015 when my 89 year old father in law sold off his last 5 motorcycles and quit riding. I wound up with the 1955 Triumph flathead twin that I bought for him back in 1975.
Yep, finally got my first green motorcycle. Just yesterday I pased the bike on to my youngest son.

By all means give it a go!

Those are fantastic looking bikes and have been really cared for and looked after well over the years. I enjoyed reading that story and your son is now the proud owner of that bike. I'm sure he will get great pleasure from it and will keep it in good shape.

Aidan, I have a new carbon fiber drive belt coming for the big green Saito powered bicycle today. Seventeen years is old enough. There used to be a guy here from Australia user named Old Fart, he kidded me about the green MC so I just had to get back at him by getting some green rc stuff. I have not painted a Saito engine green, (yet.)

I will send the rear one.

IIRC, the rear one (painted 150 label) has an unknown history, as it has not been in your possession since new. My 150 (stamped "B") also has an unknown history, so I don't think I can say anything conclusive about either engine. Let's hold off until I can find a NIB 150 that's stamped "C" or later.

SportsterRider, it's always nice to have something different and that goes for green Harley Davidsons too. Most of the Harvey's I see around here are mainly black and chrome, so I think your bike is special. It's a real work of art.

No sir, 10.5 mm is what they all measure except one that is 9.5 mm.

Interesting. I took a few minutes to measure the ID of several big block Saito parts.

120 Fathead intake 9mm
(2) 120S carbs 9.5mm
150 intake 10mm
(2) 180 intakes 11mm
220 carb 11mm

I'm curious what engine would use a 10.5mm intake. Maybe I can drill it out and use it on a 180?

Maybe you could try a 10.5 intake pipe on the 180 ? Could be it will surprise you. Perhaps add a bit of taper at the carb joint transition if there is a step there.

Yes, I would definitely try it before modifying the ID. I consider 11mm a bit on the large size for a 30cc anyway. In addition, with gas conversions I prop for lower peak rpm so a slightly smaller intake ID will likely not affect performance at all.

Agreed, always a good idea to smooth intake tract transitions.

Still curious what that 10.5mm intake was used on. Early 180 before the 220 was introduced? The 180 and 220 did end up sharing the same 11mm carb.

You may have the answer. Very possible that the 220 brought the 11 mm pipe.

Gary I just had to dig into the TRW 500 engine and see why the HP was limited to 16 to 17 hp. Then I saw that the carb was 26mm, my 125 MAICO had a 26 mm Bing carb. Looking at the way the engine is built I see that the fuel air mixture has to flow forward between the cylinders to reach the intake ports That would necessitate saving space.. It must have excellent fuel vaporization that way. At 360 lbs. it would still go pretty good. I'll bet it has awesome sound with the alternate firing construction. I am sure it purrs like a Saito 300 T on CHI.

The TRW was originally designed during WW2 as a mount for dispatch riders. Meant to run reliably in tough conditions on low grade fuel.
The bikes were built as military and police mounts after the war.

Carb bores of 26 mm were pretty common on 500cc twins. The carb used on these was made by Solex and very advanced for that era. Actually the same carb design as used on the VW Beetle only this one is side draft.
First start of the season never takes more than two kicks. Idles easily at 500 RPM all day.

Just finished mixing 24 gallons of fuel. Nice cool, dry day here. The smell of fuel makes me want to head for the field!

Cut and paste below for video of the bike's first run after over fifty years of being parts piles in bushel baskets and cardboard boxes. Now that it is broken in, idles much lower. The previous owner had taken the engine apart as well as the rest of the bike. Hacked at a few parts then quit.
Many parts had been lost and the engine was a mess.

Looking at the engine diagram both pistons move up and down at the same time. Is this what is known as a "Twingle" ?

AFAIK, The twingles. as made by Puch etc fired both cylinders together.

The alternate firing Britbikes are called parallel twins. Note the 1piece rods have solid big ends.
The crank requires mounting between centers and careful dialing in for alignment when assembling.

Speaking of alternates.
The TRW was one of the first motorcycles to be fitted with an alternator .Aside from the battery and the fact I fitted a halogen bulb in the headlamp, this bike's electrical system is otherwise all original.

Looking at the cam lobe orientation it appears to be an alternately firing twin, firing on one or the other cylinder once every 360° of crank rotation? Twingles are said to fire simultaneously?

First off, the Puch Twingle is actually a two stroke. Pistons are fore-aft parallel. They use the two piston, common bore axis to divorce the intake and exhaust ports.

The Twingles were indeed twins that shared a common combustion chamber, many Allstate scooters had the Austrian Puch engines in them.
