RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Liquid will flow from the area of highest pressure (the back of the tank) to the area of least pressure (the engine). Tie a cork to a string, attach the string to center of the lid of a wide mouth jar; fill the jar so that the cork floats up when the jar is upside down. While upside down, swing the jar in a circle. The cork, carried by the water flow will move to the FRONT of the jar. Try it, you'll like it. (any physicists out there)?
Merry Christmas, Bill; thanks for your help throughout the year.
PS You don't have to be sorry; I'm an old timer like you, it takes a lot to upset me. As you know our skin thickens with age.

I am a VERY!! proud owner of an fa82a. I am not new to the sport, but i am new to the fourstroke world. reading this thread put the "nail in the coffin" for me. It looks beutiful in th box never mind on the airplane. I have Omega 10% right now, is this good enough to break-in with?

I've been using 15% Omega in my first 82a (first 4-stroke, too) with great results. I've flown in temp ranges between 40-90F with no problems.
I'm sure others here can elaborate more, and with authority on results related to low and high nitro content.

I have been running 10% nitro with 16/4 synth/castor for the last two years in all my Saitos. they just keep purring along.

Great North- I have 2 new Saitos that I feel the same way about. My new .30 is a GK and just looks great on the shelf. I also have a .82 that is new. I guess that makes 3 of them that look almost too good to put on a plane. The other is the 170R3 radial but that one is definately going on something soon....unless I can find a way to have it on a the shelf and enjoy the sound at the same time. Wait a minute, I'm a batchelor now....so there is a way!

What would be a good break-in prop for 82? I can hardly wait to run this thing!! It is a piece of art. I plan on putting it on my extra 300 .40 size. This engine should put the pep back into it. Now if only the snow go away.

Just whatever prop you are going to run on it normally.
What kind of Extra do you have? It's my favorite aerobat.

It's a Great Plains Extra 300S 40 size. I love the plain. I had a .46fx on it but it just didn't have the "punch" i wanted. From what i have heard this Saito .82 should liven it right up. What do you have in yours?

I broke in my 82 with a MA 12x8. Benchmark prop is a 13x6 I think, but I broke it in on a plane that I thought would need the clearance of the shorter prop. Since then, I've tried a 13x8 which gave better vertical and a bit more speed, but prefer the 12x8 because the plane is so light.

I have Fliton Extra 330, weighing 6lbs even. My .82 is good power for it. Unlimited vertical, all the IMAC/3d you would want to do with it, and I haven't gotten my .82 tuned just right yet.

I just put on a 14x6 prop. I haven't run it yet. It is a prop listed in the manual, but after seeing what you guys are using for props is it too much?

Don't use a drill, they are grabby and will lead off. Use a stepped prop reamer available at most hobby shops. Most of them have 1/4" first step and go 7mm, 8mm, 9mm. I think Saito 82 has a 7mm shaft, maybe an 8mm to get on the back shoulder.

I am building a 1/4 scale sig spacewalker and plan to use my satio 150 but not having done any building with an engine inverted I am wondering if I can mount it inverted with a slight angle to avoid any starting problems or am I over estimating having starting issues with an inverted postion..cant wait to start this engine.like it so much santa is getting me a satio 125 for another plane in 2007.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
cloudancer, the saitos all run fine inverted unless your fuel tank centerline is more than 3/4 inch above or below the carb. i wouldnt go any more than that
great north, see if your buddy has a reamer, if not id go ahead and use the drill press, it should be ok, just check the balance when your done.

Hello Cloudancer; I have a quarter scale spacewalker with a Saito 120 inverted, no starting problems whatever, also the head of the engine fits so well in the cowl, it looks like it was designed for an inverted Saito. There is also enough room in the fuel compartment that placing the tank centre line is easy. The 120 works fine for me here at sea level. I have a Saito 150 but I don't think it would be any better.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Sorry if this has been mentioned before, just a fellow Club Saito member here that has a problem. I've got a Saito 72 that I had on a burrito and now on my Senior. I bought it used and put a set of Boca Bearings in it. It has ALWAYS made anythng behind the engine soaking wet with fuel. I assume that it's coming out of the crankcase breather but I can't understand why. Adjusting the carb only makes it lean. The breather is behind the front bearing so it's not like I could use a different sealed bearing (I think). I have a 180 and a 50 but the 72 is the only one that has this problem. could it actually be a seal in the carb or something?

Hi TCrafty,
The oil residue coming out of the breather is normal. There is no way to stop it. A small amount of oil/fuel flows up to the foreward end of the engine to lube the front bearing and the breather is there to relieve pressure buildup. There is no way to stop the oil. Just attach a piece of fuel tubing on the nipple and guide the other end away from the airplane as best you can, to minimize the mess.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
A friend of mine got himself an ASP/Magum 180 and I was amazed at how *little* oil that thing spits out compared to my Satios.
Okay, so the vent from the camshaft goes back to the carby -- but that oil should still end up coming out the exhaust pipe -- yet it's really dry. And yes, we were running fuel from the same bottle and my SA100's needles are dialed in *perfect* (300RPMs off peak with the nose held vertical and just a hair rich of dying on fast transitions on the low-speed needle).
So where does all the oil go to in the ASP?
It doesn't even blow much smoke -- no matter how much you richen it up -- wheras my SA100 (and 82) will almost let your do skywriting if you unwind that hi-speed needle enough.
