Default RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

I've been around RCU for about a year, now, and I had never seen the "Glow Section". Let alone "Club SAITO".
I was directed here by another member that thought you folks may be able to better help me.

I recently acquired an older model Saito FA80. The paperwork I got with it is limited. It's nothing like the online manual, available for the newer model.

Does anyone happen to have an electronic version of the older manual, they would be willing to send me?

Also, my current predicament, I've tried a 7mm and an 8mm aluminum spinner nuts. Neither one fits. LHS couldn't determine the nut size from the sample I took in. Any owners know what size this is?

One more. Since this is my first 4-stroke, I'm a little green. Is it acceptable to jam the aluminum spinner nut against the prop nut? Or, is there a better solution for securing props to 4-strokes?

Thanks,
E J

Tru-Turn sells special spinner nut assemblies for the engines The size is 7x1mm

http://saito-engines.info/index.html

If the subject comes up, the older Saito 80 had a shorter length crank where the prop bolts on.

It's possible you have slight damage to the threads of your crank. They can be touched up by careful use of p/n 2573A56 from http://www.mcmaster.com/ This is a 7mmx1 metric die.
Also here is a chat of many of the possible combinations.
http://www.zerofast.com/threadm.htm
You'll actually see more in the McMaster catalog.

Thanks, guys. The only explanation is, the 7mmx1 spinner nut must have been packaged wrong.
The threads are fine. The prop nut that came with the engine goes on and off fine. I just can't verify the size.
Still working on it, though. I'll let you know what I find.

BTW, I know it's an older model. It has a choke. Would there be much advantage to replacing it with a velocity stack?
Or, just remove it all together?

I just remembered something. The new APC prop I got for it, required reaming. And, I had to use the 8mm section of the reamer.
It's still snug. So, I know I haven't gone TOO big. Does this sound right?

the Crankshaft has 7 X 1 threads but the back plain part behind the threads is 8mm diameter

You can correct damaged threads with a small triangular file from the hardware store.

You can remove the choke on the 80 and leave it off or replace it with a Golden Knight venturi extension.

Hi Club Saito

I just discovered Club Saito a couple of days ago. This is a great thread. I have 2 72's. One is in the Javilin pictured on the left and one is going in a 1/5 scale Cub (more or less, 81 inch WS). I did own a 150S but I sold it because I never got a big enough plane for it. Should have kept it. [&o] I think that I am going to need one of those Turbo Mufflers for the Cub. If RC Specialties is reading this I would like a copy of the sound file if you could email it to me.
Thanks to all and best regards,

Bill AKA - olddogg60

I broke the 91 in for a few tanks on a 14x6 apc and was happy with the results. Put it in the plane for final adjustment with a 14x8 apc. The engine did not sound happy; very noisy and growly, 8400 rpm. Today I tried a 14x6 and what a difference, no growling, that happy hum if you know what I mean, 9500 richened to 9200, idle adjusted so well it would not shut off. I swear I could see the prop blades turning! Always used 14x8 on my enya 90 with no problem, with the 14x6 I am delighted with the saito. Alo, a point of interest I have the "prop selector" downloaded from google; It suggested 7.8 lbs 0f thrust at 0 airspeed, what we call static thrust. Measuring with a fish scale with the wheels on a smooth surface I got 7.5 lbs! Amazingly close between theory and practice.

Got a link to this "prop selector"? Did a search on Google and came up with a bunch of marine propellers.

Search "aero design propeller selector" . I think this will work.

Cool found it, thanks!

Very interesting data coming out of this software. Has anyone else verified its accuracy?

The problem I have is the rate that the thrust goes down as the speed goes up. If there is an aerodynamic expert out there I would like to hear the explanation. Does thrust ever get to 0?

I could be wrong, but I think that when the aircraft reaches its maximum velocity in any given attitude, that the thrust is then zero. If you have available thrust, then I think the plane would continue accelerating.

Does Saito make a velocity stack that will fit a FA 1.25? I'd like to put one on my newest Saito!

Thanks in advance.

Will those fit any saito? I've looked at a couple off of different sized saitos that have them and as far as I can tell they are the same size. I have a .62 I'd like to put one on.

Im pleased to report that I recieved my 80 cyl/head back from Clarence Lee in Sunland, and the new threads look great ! I put the engine back together, but had a problem tuning. I got it to where it would idle great, and go full speed great, but mid throttle was blubbery rich for some reason. I tried everything tuning wise, and it just wouldn't get right. I decided along with a friend that there must be a vacume leak somewhere, so tonoght I put a different carb on it.
I'll try it again tomorrow/later today... I hope this carb will work ok, it came off a good running 65. I had it on there before, and it ran smooth at all throttle settings, but it also had an older brass muffler on it at the time, and full throttle was more like 1/2 throttle. A buddy of mine at our flying site suggested that the brass muffler was too small for the 80, and I cannot detect a difference in the throat sizes of the 2 carbs, so im hoping that the problem was just too much back pressure before. I'll post another progress report tomorrow/today.

The same venturi will bolt on the 45S thru the 125 engine. They will not work on the 120, 150, etc big blocks.

The venturi is marginally small for a 125 but people seem to be getting away with using it. The venturi was originally designed for the Saito 50 Golden Knight.

This was nice... I thought that the carb kits for the 80 were backordered, but it turns out that they just changed the part number slightly. Instead of SAI8091A, it is now SAI8091B, so now I can fix up that funky carb with the fat midrange. Things are looking up ! If it stops raining, im going to fire up the rethreaded 80 again, and see if it's ok now with the new carb on it. I tried to call Clarence Lee to thank him, but apparently he's not around on weekends, so i'll thank him on monday. He really did a fine job for me, but he didn't install an insert, he just installed a helicoil. His wife told me that he only installs the inserts if the head is really messed up, and a helicoil won't work. Im very happy with the service too ! I got the cylinder back alot quicker than I thought I would. Good job Clarence ! and thank you to whoever that was that turned me onto him. I really appreciate it... Dennis Flora

I couldn't wait to test the 80 with the 65 carb, so I went out in the drizzle and fired er up. It dialed right in without a hitch, and ran like a watch. Very nice idle at about 1850, no loading up, and spun the 13x6 at 9000rpm tied down. I will order the kit for the FA 80 carb soon and put it back on there for the missing rpm, but at least I can fly the Super Skybolt now.

Thanks RVM, it just a Great Planes ARF. I traded my Kyosho Nexus Helicopter for it. Too bad, the guy already crashed the Nexus. I was flyin it one day, and he asked to fly it. I said no, then later he offered me the Skybolt with a Magnum 70 on it, and said I could keep my Heli TX. The Heli made me kinda nervous, and I love biplanes, so it was a no brainer. Now I have 3 bipes and a Decathlon, all with Saito's of course. The other 2 Bipes are a Kyosho Super Stearman with a 72 I have been flying for about 4 years, and a Pitts that is still in the building stage, and has a 56 waitin. The Decathlon has a 65...
