I can't talk about the Saito SS plug (though I'm sure it's a good one) but I have run OS-F's in all my Saito's. As one engine guru explained it (I think it's Clarence Lee, but not sure) the four-stroke plugs are designed to have the ability to retain their heat long enough to fire on every other stroke, typical of 4S operation (as opposed to 2S operation, which fire on every stroke).

Horizon Hobby used to recommend one of the McCoy 4S plugs (forget the designation) but perhaps this Saito plug is from that family.

Hope this helps somewhat,

Bob

The Saito SS plug looks about as much like a OS "F" as it can.

From my experience, well . . . ., I cannot tell any difference in the way a Saito "SS" and a OS "F" run

Changing the plug that you used to break in the engine isn't a bad idea. Saito SS plugs are cheaper than OS F plugs.

Pitts Update ! It flew great, and took very little trimming. It is as I suspected, after touchdown, quite a handful, but after a little practice, I was touching down and rolling out very nicely. It does not like to go slow. lol The 56 pulls it very nicely, but I have an 11x7 on their, and im thinkin bout tryin a 12x6. It's doin about 11,000 with the 11x7. Shouldn't it be around 9500 to 10,000 ?

Look for something over 10,000 RPM. Mine turns an APC 12x6 at 10,400 on Omega 15%.

I think it would put exhaust pressure into the crankcase. I have a Magnum 70 that runs the vent back into the intake manifold. It seems to work great ! Kinda like the PCV valve on vehicle.

Yet another kudo for Horizon Hobby and their Saito support.

My .82 dropped a valve a couple of weeks ago so I sent it in with a letter explaining what happened. I called today to find out what was being done with the engine, and they are replacing it. Again. The note said that the valve retainer must have snapped, which they see occassionally, and that since everything was under warranty and it was not cost-effective to repair the engine, a replacement was sent. However, instead of another .82, they are sending a 1.00. It was the same cost as the .82GK, so they had no problems with this. I just feel wary about the .82 since I've had two in a row with problems, and they were more than happy to oblige with the 1.00. I think I may put this in my Chipmunk (that I need to finish building) and convert my Extra to electric or something since a friend has some electric gear he doesn't want anymore.

I checked the tracking number they gave me to see when it would arrive, and it is scheduled for a Saturday delivery (tomorrow). They did not want me to have to wait through the holiday weekend without an engine. You can't beat that!

Sign me up boys! After many years of owning primarily OS, I recently came upon a Saito 72. After reading about their tremendous customer support, they have another new customer.

reincarnate,

You are member #522

The .72 is a good engine. There are some things about it you should read up on. Maybe search for references to the backplate and intake manifold.

Barry, I re-broke in my Saito 1.50 after replacing the cylinder, after 40 minutes on WildCat 5% Premium it turns a Mejzlick 16x8 at 9,150. Tomorrow I'll run some 15% WildCat Premium Extra and see what we get. It did good.

That's right, you have to break it in again. I like breaking in engines, but I think you like it more than me. 8*)

Hey change of subject, Major Problem, I have a Saito 100, and the suckers favorite thing to do is starting backwards almost every time. I ask folks around here advise, most common responce is [:@]it's a SAITO what do you expect, and that I should have bought an O.S. and I wouldn't have that problem. This is a turning point for me, I like this eng. but the peer pressure is hard. Can you help me prove that this brand of motor is superior to all others, more simply put, can this thing run corrected it has had only 8 tanks maybe 10 through it Please help me understand what it is, and how to take care of it, thanks alot.
Please email me at [email protected] so I can read the responces easy.

P.S. I need another 4 stroke for a nother plane .91 to 100 Got any ideas for resonably
priced good used one???

Hi donkey doctor, this particular ACE pipe thread compund has teflon in it and is good to 500 degrees F. Could it be different than other compounds that you might have used? I have to agree with you, the teflon tape works great.

Thanks,

Ernie

Hey horseman,
I have 3 Saito 100’s with many, many flights on them. I have never had a problem with them running backwards because I use an electric starter. I gather you must be flip starting the 100. I had an OS 46FX that I flip started and it always started backwards, so I would flip start it backwards and it would then run correctly. We have a couple guys at the field that flip start their Saito’s and they flip start them backwards. We have both Saito and OS 4 strokes at our field and the Saito’s seem to have better throttle response and seem to have more power, that’s from the OS guys. I don’t have anything against OS 4 strokes, my first 4 stroke was a Saito 1.80 and I had such good luck with it I just stuck with Saito’s. I now have 10 of them.
I hope this helps.

Hman, tell those guys that any glow engine whether two stroke or fourstroke will start backward when overprimed. No matter the brand.

horseman,

Since you have a Saito now you are member # 523.

Peer pressure at the field is crazy. Hardly anyone had a Saito when I bought my first one, so I was on my own. Now, I think there are as many Saitos as OS 4 strokes. There are a couple of die hard OS users, but they have been using those since back in the day when they were quality engines. There is one guy who has a bunch of YS engines, but he is one of the rare people who can tune them and keep them running without repair issues.

The best thing for you is to take the flak from the club 'experts' and learn to tune your Saito here. You may see more Saitos show up at your club like at mine. I'm having problems with an OS user now who is a good friend. He refuses to acknowlege that my Saitos run and tune differently. Once you get all of the 'hangs of it' with your Saito you will do just fine on your own.

IMHO, the club "expert(s)' are not experts. Saito's are as good or better than anything else out there. As Hobbsy points out, it could be overprimed. The solution will be simple. Stick with the Saito. As long as it hasn't been modified or misadjusted, it's a great engine. I love mine. Wouldn't trade 'em. Got a .56, .82, and a 1.20

Nothing makes sweeter revenge than success! Tune it, lean it, flip it backwards, use an electric starter, whatever. When you start using your Saito and it proves to be stone reliable you will reek the best revenge on those guys, lol!!

To add my backwards starting experiences, I like the engine to be really wet and then flip it backwards whether 2 stroke or 4 stroke. If not wet enough it will follow on through and start in the direction you are flipping it.... Now if you are normally a frontwards flipping guy and the engine is overprimed it's going to want to start backwards. Being overprimed (or really wet) raises the compression ratio to the point where the engine isn't going to want to go past TDC, therefore when it fires it will be well before TDC and want to fire in the opposite direction.

A question for you 4-stroke gurus.... when it's time for your (annual?) valve adjustment, do you usually find that they have loosened up a bit? That seems to be what I find with my 82, and that's okay with me, better than getting tight if the valve or seat were wearing any.

Thanks,

Ernie

Are you guys still setting your valves on the tight side like Bill used to suggest? (gotta have tiny bit of play though obviously) I've been using the little Saito feeler guage but making sure there's a slight drag on that when it's in, and a bit of wiggle with it out. Should be about .0015 to .002" or so.......

Thanks,

Ernie

i am about to try cool power 30 percent heli mix in my saito 1.25, i just ran my first gallon of wildcat 2& 4 stroke fuel but the saito instructions talk about using the heli fuel since it has more oil. please give me some feed back on this. i also fly a raptor 50 so the fuel will not go to waste.
