OOPS! This reply is to RC Specialties, not blw.

No Jim. It's still NIB. I was wondering if the 1.00 would handle a Balsa Nova.

pnp, that 12x6 may be too small, especially if it's a MA. My 65 runs great with a 12x7 APC.

blw,
This is a new thing for me. The 4 stroke. I ran it for a flying buddy who has a couple 4 stroke engines and it had him confused.

Thanks for your collective responses regarding my Saito 150. Another question if I may: Turning a 18X6 Master Airscrew Prop. What should I expect for Max PRM? Thanks Again

This is my 1.50 turning a Desert aircraft 18x6. My Quadra 35 turns that prop about 6,800.

Hobbsy and everyone else, you gotta take a look at this. It's OS Engines, but how far behind will Saito be?

It looks as if all the major manufacturers are brushing up their product lines. TT have a new range of 4S engines that are lighter, stronger and much prettier than the old ones. On paper, their new 75FS looks as if it might be a possible alternative to the SA72/82 in 3D applications. The (street) price is sure good too.

Is there anyone who knows about Saito FA450R3? How come it always backfired when I was trying to start it?

Your starter probably doesn't have enough power to carry it through a compression stroke?

Or are you trying to start it by hand?

There is a thread on the biofuel OS engine. The main things that I remember are fuel availability and just how expensive it would be over glow fuel. No thanks.

I honestly don't see any TT engine being an equal value alternative to a Saito .72/82.

I had a Saito 150 gold/black box. I bought it new and put it in a Dave Patrick Ultimate bipe and ran the crap out of it. I sold the Ultimate and kept the engine because it ran so nice. I then bought a Cermark Pitts S2S bipe. The new blue/white version. Flew the crap out of it too! Both planes flew great but I actually liked the Cermark Pitts better. The Saito 150 never missed a beat but I noticed it sagging at top end so I adjusted the valves and she came back to life. I ran only 15% nitro in it. I occasionally got my fingers slapped but always used an insulated leather glove for starting. NEVER an electric. No need for it! I finally noticed fuel leaking out of cowl where needle valve protruded through top of cowl and realized that the o-ring in the spraybar was leaking so I replaced spraybar and all was well again. The amazing part of my story is that these are the only problems I had while I owned the engine. During that time I estimate that I had ran well over 30 GALLONS of fuel through this engine!!! The engine has a new owner and it still runs with authority. AMAZING!!

I've got a Harrier .46 whom I got from J J Freestyle here on RCU. Great member to work with. Anyhow, I put a Saito .82 in her, and I have a SkysharkRC Edge 540 .60 with a Saito 1.25 motor in that. And I just bought a NIB Hangar 9 Edge 540 1.20 and I think I'll put the Saito 2.20 in that or maybe a DA-50, if that'd work on that plane. I'd like to try and go to gas. I've never had a gas powered plane before and I'd like to try it. Any thoughts on the DA-50 on the H9 Edge 120?? Thanks.

Birman,

It may fly the Balsa Nova but would be under powered. I always try to stay at the high side of the engine recommendations. Sometimes you need the extra power to get out of a bad situation. Good luck.

There is absolutely no problem starting by hand. Advance throttle to full open. Attach glow igniter, Grasp prop FIRMLY with right hand. Place finger over muffler outlet and rotate prop briskly (while still grasping prop firmly) till she kicks bacK. Now set throttle to high idle and give her a brisk flip or two. Tadahh!! It's running! No problem!
PLEASE do not advise people to turn a prop by hand with the glow plug igniter attached! The very thought of that makes me wince. At full throttle even - SEESH!

You may do whatever you wish, but be aware that what you are doing is BEGGING for stitches, or worse.

To anyone else reading this - DON'T DO THAT! If you turn the prop by hand, NEVER have the igniter attached. When flipping the prop by hand, always use a "chicken stick". You only have 10 of them, and I bet you would like to keep them......

snip...... your user name reminds me that I have a P-47 top Flite Gold edition .60 size in home waiting to be built, it will be a winter project, by now I need to fly, fly and fly, I am happy to say that I fixed my Saito .91S engine changing only the HS Needle valve and adjusting the valves.
I have one of those too except mine is about half built and have an OS120 for it. Other P47's I have... the Hanger 9 P47 60 size with a Saito 100 in it. It is a nice flyer. E-Flight foamy electric P47. I have a Top Flight quarter scale still in a box with a Cox P47 Foamy still in the box sitting on top. I too have some winter projects that just don't seem to get done as soon as I would like. My father flew a P47 during the war, hense a lot of P47's.

Worst...Advice...Ever.

Propping an engine at WOT with the glow driver attached is unbelievably reckless.

My approach is to prime the engine with a finger over the exhaust, throttle wide open, but NO glow igniter attached.

When it's wet with prime, I
(1) close the throttle to just above idle,
(2) attach the glow igniter and
(3) spin the SPINNER backwards against compression.

Two times out of three it will start right up.

Thanks guys! I like the idea to spin it backward since it always turns to the opposite direction. I will try it today!

Hi Seventy,

Yeah, that's the idea. It seems odd to flip the prop backwards, but the idea is to keep the mixture rich so that it will detonate before reaching TDC, thus forcing the prop to rotate in the correct direction. That's the way that they used to hand-prop old full-scale radial airplanes, if you happen to ever come across any old videos of them starting engines.

And, it always surprises you when it happens!! Just make sure that the plane is chocked really well and that everything is out of the way. It'll take you by surprise the first couple of times that you do it. Let us know how you make out.

Ok gentlemen I couldn't get the used Saito 72 running right and got aggravated and bought a new 72. So now i"m the proud owner of 2 Saitos, one sick and one just broken in!! My question is what prop for this engine on a Hanger 9 PTS Mustang. Right now it's got a 12x6 3 bladed prop on it. Now I have some experience flying, I fly a 60 sized Twist and 40 sized Twist also a 120 sized Stinger. I'm not looking for speed, just good performance. I'm gonna send the sick one in for service.

Thanks,

Joel

The 12 X 6 three blade is the correct propeller
