Ok another question.
What is used to extend the high speed needle to outside the cowl so adjustments can be made? Where do I get one?
Thanks

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Okay, for membership I have a Saito 91S in my Andrews Aeromaster, another in my Midwest Citabria, and a 150 in my soon to be completed CG Ultimate.
Have a couple of questions for you Saito owners.
I have never really been able to get my 91 in my Citabria to run well. The engine is mounted about about 140 degrees, somewhere between horizontal and inverted. It has on board glow and I had troubles with the on board glow, which was fixed with a new, higher capacity battery. Had the plane out today, and it kept quitting on me about 7-8 mins into my flights. I am running OS Type F plugs. The first time it quit I thought it was lean, so I richened it up just a click or two. Refueled and started having troubles getting the plane off idle. Once the throttle was advanced enough to turn off the glow, it would quit. I tried tweaking the low speed idle mixture and resetting the main mixture. Got it so it would stay lit from idle to full and took the skies again. Got about six or seven minutes into the flight and it quit on low/mid rpm. Rich enough as I had a slight smoke trail. Got a couple more flights in, but each ended in a dead stick. Back on the ground the engine again would not transition from low to high (on glow to off glow). I tinkered with it quite a while. Then figured the problem must be my fuel. The 15% Omega I was using was the last of a gallon I had purchased last year. What do you guys think? I have never had a problem with the Saito in my Aeromaster. I don't think I have had one good consistent outing with this plan/engine since I built it. How sensitive is that low speed idle mixture?
Second question. I have mounted the 150 in my Ultimate with the engine horizontal. The idle mixture screw is at the top, which puts my fuel line at the top, above the level of my tank. The carb itself is lower. I'm hoping I am going to have enough pressure to flow the fuel. Anybody else done this?
Thanks,
Ken

Is this piece for the 120 the same as the piece on the 150? Its listed under the 120 but not the 150, thats why i'm wondering, i need a new one.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
My 72 has started blowing black stuff from the muffler for the first time? Why is it doing this. I use coolpower an don't really have much of a smoke trail. people tell me the engine won't last long without a smoke trail. Any thoughts on what might be wrong would be great

Question: I have yet to run my 170's, I imagine there are REAL smooth, yes? So it if that is true then my idea of using 1/8 x 1" T6 alum bars as a mount point would be good?
The application is a Tigercat nacelle. I'd mount the bars on the back of the engine using twp holes each and then mounting the engine to the nacelle using engine stand offs.
Comments, ideas,

i use a small allen key that fits. cut it to length, it should stick out of the cowl an inch or so. it works well because it has flat sides to tighten the set screw against.
or file a flat spot on the 2-56 rod.

My LHS sold me a "Safety Spinner Hub" but I think it is the wrong size (SPN008) for my FA 100. It is an 8 X 1.25 -- don't I want a 7 x 1.0 (SPN007)? Also, this one, if screwed all the way on would have the propeller shaft in it so far it would block the hole you use to tighten the hub. Do I need a spacer nut between the hub and the prop? This is my first Saito.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ken6ppc, I checked the valve clearance this evening. On the exhaust, I was able to get a .009 feeler gauge through the gap, and on the intake valve, a .012 feeler gauge. I read through the Saito sticky posted by blw, and set my clearance to .002. It seemed that in the sticky that the gap is correct if the tappet is putting some pressure on the gauge. However, when I was done, I couldn't get any compression. So I used the .004 gauge and gapped again, looking for similar pressure from the tappet on the gauge. This time when done, I got my compression back. I suppose I have set the clearance correctly. I am going to leave my cowl off for the next trip to the field. I also have a fresh gallon of Omega 15%. Hopefully I can get this 91 dialed in once and for all.
For the longest time I couldn't keep my muffler on tight. It finally worked loose so many times, the threads were shot. Horizon sent me a new one at no charge, and I used some teflon tape, which worked. Then the glow battery failed me. Seems I have spent more time taking that cowl off and tinkering with things than actually flying. Looking forward to trying the 150 in my Ultimate. I've heard lots of great things about the bigger singles.

The feeler gauge that is supplied with Saito engines is useless, in my opinion. I have NO idea how anyone could actually use it to set clearances at half of it's thickness. I know that I can't set a clearance of .0015" to .002" with a gauge that is .004" thick. I use a set of machinist's feeler gauges that I bought many years ago when I was working on motorcycle engines, and they still work great. I think you can get a set at most automotive stores, or someplace like Sears. Here is a link to a [link=http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00999007000P?vName=Tools&keyword=feeler+gauges]Feeler Gauge Set At Sears[/link].
BTW, as your engine warms up, the clearances get larger, so be certain to set them cold. The specs are correct when the engine is cooled off to ambient temperature.
Once your muffler is tightened up while hot, using teflon tape, you won't have to touch it again until you have to take it off.

not sure about spacer? but check this link out. The thread on the FA100 is 8x1.25.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Here is my new Saito .72:
... i breaked it with 12x8 APC prop.. and the peak rpms was 9.700rpm(10% nitro, 20% oil). Is it fine? I was hope more from this.. I will change the prop for a 13x6 one.. The thecnical data of this shows max power at 12.000rpm.
I think in install a Perry pump for i can remove the mufler restriction and permit the engine goes to higher rev. What the max rev that a Saito .72 can work?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Use the 13-6.
You should not use your Saito with a prop that allows it to turn more than 11,000 rpm on the ground.
The engine will only pick up around 200 rpm without the muffler. The complexity of the pump will be more trouble than it is worth.
The pump used with the Saito is the vibratory model VP20
