Default RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Well , Ole Faithful, my Saito .50 decided to give me problems. I was not getting full power at wot , adjusted low end and then high end. At appox 1/2 throttle the engine ran max and started to decrease RPMs as I open the throttle more. [X(] After readjusting the ls and hs again, then back off about 300 rpms ,the engines chokes out going from idle to wot. If I fatten it up it bogs and if I lean it I cuts off quickly at wot. Never had a problem in years with this engine ( this was on a very hot day last week) and I wonder if that affected it??

anyone?

on a cub, i would not go any greater than a 6" pitch. the 13x6 MA on my .70 FS (goldberg clipped wing) gives much more than scale flight speed and lots of verticle for big loops and stall turns.

That Saito 50 sounds like bad fuel

i have a saito 1.00 i plan to install on my GP .60 extra 300s. expect it to be a good match (w/APC 14x8?). considering upgrading to the 1.25. it really seems that i hear about a lot of people having trouble w/that engine. if i do use it, what's a good prop for that a/c? apc 15x6? does the velocity stack work on this engine also?

I have a velocity stack on mine. It seems to do OK. Most people are running a 15-8 on the 125 but I like the way it runs with a 15-6.

The 125 seems to be OK. I like the way mine runs. There's a lot of them out there. Problems seem to be with the muffler coming off or coming apart and rusty bearings.

P51delta,

Try a 14x4, but watch the RPM's. Don't let it get above 10K or so. I had good luck with that combo in my Funtana 40.

Tailskid,

I'd like to find out what you think of that combo. I'm possibly asking Santa for a Funtana X50 for Christmas and would like to put my Saito .82 in it. I'll be interested in your opinion. What are you using for prop and fuel?

I had a Saito .82 on a Funtana X50 - for a short while! It was great fun, until the left wing decided to go its own separate way! That engine and Rx is now running happily in a Showtime 50. The ST50 has a wing tube, and the X50 did not. I wonder if there had been a wing tube......

I felt the wing wasn't put together very well on my Funtana. It snapped right at a spar, and it looked like there was hardly ANY glue on it. I would have had to remove the covering to add glue in that area. But to be fair, I was NOT easy on the X50!

However, since I did NOT want a repeat performance on the wing, I bought the ST50 to replace my X50. The X50 was more wildly acrobatic than the ST50, but the ST50 ain't bad! And.... the wing is staying on - so far.....

Bob, I've been flying that plane with a Saito .72 and just LOVE it...the .72 was very adequate in the vertical department - and now with an .82 hummmmmm....

Prop? Don't even have it out of the box yet Suggestions are welcome.

For fuel, I've always used Omaga or Powermaster - w/ castor and have never had a problem - just wondering if I should try some all synthetic...heck, I just might read the instructions and follow them this time

P51delta,

re: .82 engine

I ran mine on a Twist w/ 14 x 4 and that was awesume. Mucho power on a light airframe made for 3D
( didnt get a kick out of 3D )

Moved the .82 to a SeaGull Decathlon w/ a 13 x 6 Plenty of power. I believe the boxy airplane weighs about 5.5
Again, very nice engine, Pulls that airplane around no problem.
good luck w/ it

I am running an APC 16 x 6 prop on my 1.25 . I have the engine on a GP Super Skybolt 9.8 lbs, and it hauls tail. The engine is flawless. ( and is sounds soooooooo sweet too ! ) Its mounted inverted and wont miss a beat.

good luck !

Good day
I bought a Saito 100 last fall and put it on a new 4*60. From the first start up it ratteled loudly. So bad that we brought it down on the maiden flite to see what all the racket was about. I have flown it a dozen or so times and it is getting worse. Going to take it off and send it back to Saito. A new engine that cost this much should not do this and now I have to spend more money to send it in. Still it runs good with a lot of power. Sorry but it happened. So far not pleased.

But thats just me

At this link along the top of the title page there is a selection about how to install R/C bearings. It is about 2 strokes but we can talk you through the timing issue.

So I guess I'll just use a 14x4 APC and fire up my brand new, very first Saito engine (FA-82) tomorrow. It's been waiting for me patiently on the shelf for months now. I've only had YS 4-strokes until now, but the time has come. I Have high expectations and I expect to be very pleased by this shiney, good looking motor.

I just picked up a like new Saito 1.50 with a brand new Kleco pitts muffler off of the big auction site. I am now back up to three Saito's. A 100, 125, and a 150.

Hi Fellows!
What's the best APC prop for a FA 82. I want to try some 3D. The plane weighs just under 6 lbs. I had a YS.63 in it until now and it just wasn't quite enough. I hope it will hover now with the FA-82.
Thanks
p51delta, owning both a FA-82 and YS .63 in very similar planes, I feel they are very close in power. The .82 does seem to be able to swing a larger prop though. In a 6 lb. plane, it might be a better choice. I settled on a 14x4 Zinger Pro on my .82. The 15x4 Pro worked pretty good too, but was a little slower on the throttle up.

in the gp .60 size extra 300s i'd like to stay with a 15" or 14" prop. 16" would be just a bit large. could i use 15x8 apc or 14x10? either a good choice? what should i expect for rpm w/20/20 fuel or w/30% nitro?
any idea of what i should be getting for rpm w/the 1.00 w/14x8 prop/20% nitro?

Sure, I fly my H9 81" span cub on a Saito 56 and off water with floats and it flies great. I can't imagine using any more power. I like flying more scale-like but it takes off quick if you nail it. Good luck.

Uh Oh!!! That would be disappointing if the FA 82 & the YS .63 are similar in power. The .82 has ca. 3.5 ccm displacement more than the YS. I was hoping for a massive increase in power. It's all the same plane. a Kyosho Edge 540 in orange. 1440 mm wingspan. just changing the motor.
