Capt, you can drive to your Local Hobby Shop and not have to pay any shipping charges?

Hey everyone,
I was wondering if anyone can help me figure out how to put smoke on my Saito .82? I am not sure what smoke system to go with but was thinking of going the skywriter rout. And I beleive I would have to do some sort of pittstyle muffler? If anyone has a smoke system on there saito .82 or any Saito and you could help me figure out what all I need it would be appreciated. I just started running my saito with 30% heli fuel and I am amazed at how much more punch I have and now unlimited verticle, my crappy Funtana x50 is a little more fun. I am planning on wrecking it soon in style with some SMOKE, just need to figure it out. Thanks...

With the extra weight of a smoke system, you can forget vertical performance

Do you really think I will add that much weight? I also have a Saito Twin 182 that I have been thinking about finding the perfect plane for. It would be for a 3d plane, and if it would be better to plan later for smoke I would be willing to go that rout. But really had my heart set on putting smoke on the Funtana with the Saito.
I did realize I would sacrifice some power..

With the extra weight penalty of a smoke system, the bigger the plane/engine the better.

yeah a rough estimate with my 180 a smoke system would add almost a pound, over that with any duration .I was only figuring for an 8oz tank which would be minimal. 16oz and your hitting the 1 1/2 pound mark.
but then there are the manifold pressure systems you can use if your up to it.
The one reason I went glow with the 180 sized plane was the power to weight, it would be a shame to ruin the improved flight characteristic with a simple oooh ahhhh device.

As the saying goes though "to each his own"

Hello Saito guys. I need to tap into your knowledge and experiences. I generally build and fly 60 size planes and am currently building a Sig Astro Hog and have a Saito FA-91S for it. For my next project, I was planning a Four Star 60 with a FA-91S. A friend, whose opinion I respect greatly, recommended a FA-100 instead of 91S and he gave me some good tips as to why. This question is not to second guess my friend, but I would like to hear from Forum members as to their experiences with the FA-91s and/or FA-100. I am new to four stroke engines and a Saito FA-65 was my first so I am still try to learn what engines are best for my type of flying. I find this forum helpful. Thanks for any replies.

A Saito 91 has plenty of power for a Four Star 60
The Four Star 60 would even be a nice plane with a Saito 65. The plane is not sensitive to power.
The Four Star 60 tends to be tail heavy so a heavier engine would be nice
I think the 100 weighs less than the 91
The 100 is actually a 105 if you multiply out the bore and stroke
The carburetor and valves are bigger in the 100 so it has a lot more power.
The Saito 82 will pull the same props just as fast as a 91
We suspect the soon demise of the 91 due to the newer Saito models that have come out.
The external dimensions including the mounting bolt holes are verry close between the OS 91, Magnum 91, and the Saito100

Capt Lou
If you like to go up, and I mean up, get the 100. If you like to just piddle around and fly around not doing much, the 91 is fine, but to really have fun the 100 is out of sight. I have the 100 and I love it. A friend just built a YAK-54 and put a 100 on it and it flies great. With a bigger engine, you can always slow it down, but with a smaller engine you can't get the extra power if you want it. I say get the 100 and pull the throttle back some for the first couple of flights until you get used to the plane and then let her rip. Just my .02 worth, but to big is always better then to small.

Hello W8YE.............occasionally I check into this thread. Saito engines own 2 x Saitos .72, Saito .91, Saito 100, Saito 1.20.

I'm in the process of putting together the U-CAN-DO 3D .60 - .90 and I have a question regarding the hooking up of the push rod to the throttle arm. I am wondering if any of you guys are flying this size UCD 3D and using the Saito 100 as powerplant. I have reversed the throttle arm towards the centre and closer to the exit hole of the pushrod but not close enough. The throttle arm moves away from the centre as the throttle closes. Would appreciate your help or anybody's help with pictures or diagrams, preferrably pictures.
The UCANDO 3D 60-90 cowl is quite narrow.

on my ucando .46 i have a os 70 FS. the engine is mounted inverted. leave the throttle arm alone. it needs a 1/16" hole. drill the hole for the throttle pushrod tube thru the firewall about 1/4" - 1/2" lower than the hole in the arm. use a scrap pc of 1/16" wire, make a 180 degree bend in it w/a 1/2" diameter half circle and leave about 1 1/2" to come back. slide it in the pushrod tube and see how it aligns with the hole in the arm. when you get it to look good, make a z bend and make it work the way you want, nice and smooth. then cut it to length as needed to reach the servo arm. i use a harry higley pushrod connector at the servo, they are the best i've found.
this is the easiest way to hook up a four stroke throttle. it has some "give" so it doesn't bind.
i'll take a picture tonight and send it out.

Hi Jon......................thanks for your suggestion, I'll look at your picture first, just to see the location of your throttle arm. What's Harry Higley's servo connector looks like. I'm not a fan of Z bends, never used them as they tend to misallign especially on a throttle, you need smooth and positive transition. But when push come to shove one must compromise.
Thanks

Charles.

A guy at the flying field has a UCD 60 and it now has a OS 120 AX but it has had other engines including a OS 91FX, OS 91 SurpassII and Saito 100.

With the four stroke engines he left the throttle arm on the outside and had the throttle rod bent in a "U shape" to double back to the throttle from the front side after coming through the firewall. I think that is what the previous poster was saying?

Garthwood,

In my Edge I installed my Saito 125 mostly inverted with the carb reversed and it worked out.

See this old post on how to use a lever:
[link=http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4987332]http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=4987332[/link]

Also, a few posts down from that one, see the link to the Dubro 4-Stroke Throttle Linkage #665. It's the same basic idea but both control rods connect to the same side of the pivoting lever.

You can always drill a couple of holes and move the throttle control arm if you need to.

Tesla................thanks for your suggestion. I do have the DuBro #665, but it won't won't work on the UCD. I have repositioned the carb back to the outside. The cowl is quite narrow. The #665 works if the cowl was wider. The #665 hooks on the side of the engine mount, there is no room to do that. I'll drill out a new hole in the firewall for the pushrod exit to that side of the throttle arm. I think it is going to work out. I will either use a clevis or a swivel snap on ball link to hook up to the throttle arm . There is probably about 3/16" of clearance from the cowl's side when the throttle is in its closed position, as the throttle opens the space increases, so there's more clearance. For control I'll use the Sullivan Gold-n-cable with housing. I have this arrangement on my CG Ultimate and Saito 120.

It will be a couple of more days before I get to work on this one. Will keep you guys posted. Thanks.

Charles.

C, the bushing inside the servo arm is a piece of fuel tubing about 1/4 inch long, they are long lasting and smooth as silk.

Hi,

Anyone know where to get a coupling to add about an inch to the saito100 exhaust manifold? Just too short to get through the cowl of my hobbico Sakhoi. Extensions are too long, angled also, any help?

Thanks,

Barry

I am waiting for a new saito .62 from the local hobby shop to fly in an Cermark Graduate. Sure hope it won't over power the plane.

The plane calls for a .40 2 stroke. I also own a saito 125. Have only run it on a test stand for 40 min. Started first flip. Ran without the glow starter with 5 turns rich as the instructions calls out. Sounds sooo nice. I used a 16/6 prop and after 30 min., I leaned the carp some and the picknec table I mounted the test stand on started to walk. That is power.
