Forget all those listed horsepower figures for model engines. You cannot depend on them. They are almost meaningless. For most model engines to turn that fast, you would need a prop so small that the plane wouldn't fly.

The 100T does not make as much power as the Saito 100.

It is more like that of an 82 because the internal friction of the extra cylinder and cam.

Thanks a lot for a great answer. I'm proud to say I figured it out the proper way, but it still only runs at mid throttle.

Try opening up the idle mixture needle a little?

Bad fuel will react crazy at times. Like the engine only wants to run mid throttle. The needle valve can never be adjust just right? The engine will be rough and seem rich up to the point of lean cut off. It will never smooth out.

It will quit in flight on you etc.

Hi Xjet,
Thanks for your reply, the motor had new bearings & a new ring by a guy who knows Saitos, the bore was deglased using 600 grade wet&dry, when the motor was first run it "pumped'out fuel from the vent & the camshaft bearing housing then it seemed to also be coming out of the pushrod tubes, the moter was run inverted on a test bed.there is so much fuel/oil that it cant be used in a plane until problem is solved.the motor runs perfect except for the excessive fuel.I might mount the motor upright & see what happens,
Cheers,Keithie,

Ed Cregger and thrashin;
Thanks for the help. I was adjusting the engine when it back fired, not running it lean. I had to take the cowl off and put it back on and to do that, I had to remove the needle valve. I was using a wood Zinger 15x6 just to try it out and it threw the prop quite a ways when it back fired. The fuel I am using is a mix of Syn. and caster, so do I still need to add more caster oil to the fuel???? I adjust the engine for peek and then back off about 300 rpm and that was what I was doing when it threw the prop. I don't lean the engine all the way and then go fly. I have never done that to any engine, except for a racing 40 when I was trying pylon racing back in the 70's. Even then I didn't leave it right at peak. I'll let you know how it runs this weekend after I fly it. I may try 30% heli fuel also. That is what everyone flying Saitos seems to be using at the field where I fly. Thanks for the help and I'll let you know how things go this weekend.

I have new Saito 180 and am doing the break in with the help of club old timers with much experience. While adjusting the high speed
needle valve we notice that it does not seem to do much as we turn it. In other words not much change in rpm as we adjust it. Also we noticed that it seems to move around on its own and not stay in one spot from vibration. We tightened the valves holder and it seems to help but not completely. Any ideas would be appreciated.

And what do I do about a moving needle valve? Is there a way to secure it where I set it?
Thanks for your info

You might try a piece of fuel tubing. As you screw the needle valve in it will apply a little pressure. It has worked for me. Isn't there a clip installed to hold the setting?

Guys:

I don't know if this is news or not, but Advantage Hobby sent me an email announcing that Saito has just come out with a new gasoline engine. Does anyone have more information about this?

It does have a metal clip to hold the setting and I have bent it to create more tension but it still moves. I will try the fuel tubing idea and thanks.

Hi Everyone,

This is a great thread !
Have a couple of questions: I have recently purchased a Sait FA 100. This is my first 4 stroke. I have follwed the break in procedure in the manual and have mounted it to my P51D. I am getting a peak tach reading of 9200 with a MA 15 x 6 and cool power 15%
The 9200 rpm seems kinda low, does anyone have the same setup and if so what are your tach readings. It seems alot of people use 30% heli fuel in the saito engines. Do they run better with that fuel ? Also the lowest reliable idle I can get is 2700 rpm, is this normal ?

Thanks,

Marco

While adjusting the high speed needle valve we notice that it does not seem to do much as we turn it. In other words not much change in rpm as we adjust it.
This happened to me once, I kept backing out the needle valve until it fell on the ground and the engine still ran! It was full of dirt and the dirt was reducing the fuel acting like the valve. Make sure the fuel feed/needle area in the carb is clean. The small (1 CM long) tubing on the needle valve threads works well to both prevent air from getting in and from the valve turning on its own. Not sure why this would be happening on a new engine tho...

9200 is about right with a 15-6.

30% heli does not hurt them as long as you readjust the needle valve.

You will have to adjust the low speed mixture screw to get it to idle lower

SAITO .30

I need to replace the ball bearings on a saito .30 .
Those parts are out of stock at Horizon.
Do you know what are the dimensions for the front and rear ?

Thanks

Phil

Thanks a lot for your help. I talked to Mike from Boca but he is not
too sure about the dimensions.I 'll probably have to deassemble first
to measure the bearings.

THanks again

Phil

I have replaced bearings in several motors by simply taking the bearing out of the motor (whats left) and into a local bearing specialist.
If the have to order them in it takes no longer than a couple of days.
And you get the option of higher grade, stainless, etc.

i went to www.rc-bearings.com, he stocks the regular steel bearings, not the better quality ceramic bearings. steel bearings (specific for that engine) are $4.97.
go to the website, at the top of the page click on catalog, steel bearings, then saito.

The Golden Knight and the silver one are the same except for the color. One runs as good as the other.

Go for the silver 82 and turn those tight loops?
