RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
This is a little off topic, but I assume everyone here is into small, precision engines like I am. Many of you may be aware of this company, for those who aren't, check out the video on this page. I wich I had money to burn.

Just got another package in the mail! This one's an FA-45. I'm hopeing to get some info on this. Does anyone have a PDF of the manual? I know it's discontinued, but I believe Hobbsy said it shares some parts with the .56. Any chance I could get a list of some of those parts? Any help, info would be appreciated. The only thing I can see wrong with this one is a slight dent on the intake tube. The guy I got it from says it runs great, and he ran about 1/2 gal through it last summer. It's a little oily and smells like fresh glow fuel, so I think it's all good. I think I'm gonna be busy this weekend...I even have a 12-5 prop to try on it to see how it compares to Hobbsy's FA-45.

Just curious. Is this the engine I saw in my LHS? I was tempted, but my cell phone rang and spoiled the moment.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hobbsy, I have a question for you. This FA-45 MK2 that I got came with a muffler and pipe that were sent seperate (not attached) I tried to screww the pipe into the engine and it stopped after 1/2 turn. I didn't force it, and if it's cross threaded it was already that way. It went in smoth for that 1/2 turn 'till it bound up. Can you tell me what thread the exhaust port is? I measured and put a thread guage on the pipe and came up with 10x.75 . I tried to check the port, but I can't really get an accurate pitch measurement. Thanks.

Well, the good news is I grabbed a 10x1.00 bolt at the local hardware store and it threaded right into the head, so I guess the pipe is the wrong one. Thanks w8ye for the info. You wouldn't know whet size the prop needs to be reamed to on that engine would you? The thread looks like a 6mm, but the shaft seems to be 6.5... seems odd.

The prop nut should be 7 X 1.
Here is a pipe to fit your engine. The engine is not loud with a straight pipe

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I just found this forum and have a few questions. I have 5 Saito motors and the oldest is the 120 dating from around 1980 I'm sure its one of the first 120's around. Its on the front of my 1/4 Cub and is need of a bearing overhaul. Matter of fact they been going south for a few years now, I can tell because the prop nut is starting to get a little warm after a flight. It runs great just a liitle rough when spinning it through the cycles. Just how much trouble is it to replace the bearings in one of these. I have done it on the 2 stroke engines but never tried one of the 4 strokes. Its winter time and the flying is slowing down for a few months and seems like a good time to try and tackle this job. Any special things I should look for while i have the motor torm down?
Any suggestions would be helpful,
Pete

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
If you have replaced bearings in two strokes you already know about the hardest part
Fortunately the Saito cylinder will just lift off with the piston/rod inside when you remove the back plate and unfasten the four cylinder bolts. Start to raise the cylinder and when you raise the cylinder wall above the crankcase, you can shift it to the rear and unhook the connecting rod from the crankshaft
The crankshaft must be removed before you can get the bearings out and you cannot get the crankshaft out without first removing the prop drive hub.
The bearings are the last thing removed from the crankcase during disassembly.
The cam timing is with the dot towards the crank with the piston at top dead center (crank pin straight up)
The valve lash is set at .002" to .004"

'Lo Gents,
I have a new Saito 125 that's going in a Great Planes PT-17 Military Stearman, Question: can the carb be reversed?. It would work better to have the throttle linkage on the other side than it is now. Thanks!
BTW this is my second Saito - the first being an .82 four stroke in my Funtana 40. Awesome engine!![sm=thumbup.gif]
Best,
Dave

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Sure! Just take the two mounting screws out, and pivot the carb and intake pipe sideways. When it clears the side of the engine, swivel the carb around, and remount it.
Nearly all of my Saitos are running with reversed carbs.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well, I'm waiting for a backplate for my .82, and an exhaust for the .45, but I think I have my "dyno" ready for testing. I'll probably end up re-doing the throttle lever, but that's all I had laying around for the moment. I was going to mount a tank on the throttle upright, but am thinking of puting it on the ply to the side now. The whole test stand plate is mounted on 2 ball bearing 75 lb drawer slides. The 3.8" bolt and collar in the center goes through a 3/4" hole in the aluminum plate to limit movement to about 1/4". the scale only needs a little over 1/16" of movement for 50lbs. Should work well.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I'm going to try the saito pump with a regulator you recommended wy8e on my saito 65. Would anyone happen to know the tap size I need to use for the backplate for installing the "intake" tap? I got the pump in the mail today but of course there are no instructions.
Thanks

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
After looking at Boca Bearing and RC-Bearing web sites I see they both have many bearing sets that are suitable for the FA-120. Am I safe to assume that all the FA-120's use the same size bearings, and I only have to choose the best one, ie...ceramic vs stainless ? Or should I pull the engine and measure and them, then order the ones that match my 120. Some of the sets on Boca seemd to have different demensions but were still listed for the 120.

Pete, I guess I live about halfway across the State from you, I always measure them but I've never had one turn out different than the sellers show. I'm 6 miles outside Colonial Beach right near route 3 at Oak Grove. Boca is a great outfit to deal with, I've never had a single complaint.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I have a new saito 82 with 3 gallons of 30% nitro just ran thru it. It idles perfect at less then 1800 for extended periods (upto a couple mins) then revs w/o cutting out or hesitating. However, it's had a couple dead sticks off in the distance where I can't recall accelerating quickly, just lining up for a landing. When flying I tune up the idle to 2600 rpms. Can't figure out why it appears to have perfect running characteristics and then just once in while it dies...
