Well now I'd say that sucks!! :-) I see your point. Would probably suck air/oil or what ever by the ring/piston to breath. That being the case it makes you wonder why Saito didn't put two vent nipples in to start with. But at least it's nice that there is one available for field instalation.

Here's how I did my 72.. The tubing is 5/32 ID I found at the LHS and the clamp is for normal fuel line, stretched to work over the 5/32. The larger tubing slips past the barbs on the nipple and over the hex base. Total length about 8" and I didn't notice any degredation when I put it on like I did with 3/32.

I had a thought about this crankcase venting, and the tubing length. I imagine that there's a maximum length because the waste oil will form a 'plug' in a hose that is too long. There is a positive and a negative pressure on that nipple caused by the up-down motion of the underside of the piston. That plug of oil will flow back and forth in a too-long hose because there is only so much volume in the crankcase to push the plug out.

How about if we put a short piece of, say, 3/32" hole over the breather nipple (because that's the size that the nipple was designed for), then sleeve that piece with a larger diameter sleeve to let oil flow out, and air flow in simultaneously

I don't know if I made any sense with my description or not...

Just a thought...

I dont know if this would work or not but what if you put a tee in the line say 2 '' from the the vent and then put the tube facing up so it could suck air in that way while the oil flows down the long main fuel tubing. cheers the pope

What size Saito engine mount do I need for my Saito FA 82 engine. Would like to use a one piece aluminum mount but I can't figure out the size according to Saito's lettering!

The 82 is 35mm or a little over 1 3/8 " across the crankcase at the mounting lugs

You will need a mount that has that much distance between the rails

I use the Great Planes Adjustable 40 size mount

Got a question for some of you experienced Saito owners. I just bought a new Saito 180. The manual recommends using a fuel with 10% to 15% Nitro and 20% oil. Where I live everything comes in by wagon train so I really need to know what I'm buying when I order something. I haven't been able to find any with 20% oil except one with 30% nitro. What do you guys use? I want to be sure I break this new engine properly. Any suggestions.

Powermaster makes a fuel called YS 20/20 that also is sometimes labelled YS/Saito

I used Cool Power 15%, which has 17% synthetic, and added a few ounces of Sig Klotz 2 cycle oil to bring it to about 22% for breaking in a 72.

Order regular gallon of 15% nitro and 17% oil fuel and put a 2oz bottle of castor oil in it from from THE store.

UPS charges outrageous prices for shipping fuel.

Better yet, just order the least you can (to get you by) and the next time you go to Billings, buy a case of fuel and a bottle of Sig castor oil.

You should be able to get what you want in Billings.

There are three model airplane Hobby shops in Billings. A couple are nice nationally known ones. You should be able to get whatever you want there.

Thanks for the response guys. I've done business with Central Hobbies in Billings. As you say, w8ye, it makes more 'cents ;-) to drive to Billings (+ or - 100 miles) and buy a case of gallons than pay shipping by UPS. And with the good information you've given me I'll know what to get when I get there. And the wife usually drags me up there a couple time a month anyway so the freight on the fuel will be basically free. Can't beat that. Thanks agaion and have a great day!!

I have the FA-62 and I ran a short tube from the breather into the carburetor so it will suck in the oil, and it will go through the engine again. [8D] Most of the extra oil goes out the exhaust, there is a little that ends up on the outside of the engine, not enough to drip into the cowl. I am still breaking the engine in so it has been running extra rich. I haven't had any transition or dead stick problems with it yet and it keeps the outside of the plane much cleaner than the 2c! I read somewhere in this thread about drilling and tapping the intake and installing a nipple to run the breather tube to. This will keep the oil from splashing out of the carburetor when you are at idle.

I tie wrapped an aluminum tube to the inverted engine mount. I connected it to the breather with a short piece of fuel tubing and another short piece to just above the carb barrel to minimize oil splash out at low throttle settings.

Ron,

The fuel will last just about forever if you keep the jugs in the box, and in a temp controlled place out of sunlight. I buy mine that way and it sometimes takes a while to use up all that I have. You could buy a case or two, and not worry over the winter.

I would definately want to buy enough fuel at a time to make a 200 mile round trip worth while. got any idea how long a gallon of fuel would feed a l80 in normal operation?

The side of the intake manifold closest to the cylinder gets the aluminum gasket.

I have a question. Is there a top and bottom for a Saito piston ring? My replacement ring looks the same to me, but I know some rings are designed to only be installed in one direction.

Im getting 8 12-15min flights off a gallon.

This is on a 1100 sq in 11.5pound model. Wingloading is roughly 23oz ,some 3d but mostly scale aerobatics.

Hi Guys I have a Question regarding my Saito 82.I would like to put and extension on my exhaust, so as not to cover the top of my wing with residue.Will Reg. clear tube(such as found at plumbing store) work? Will this ext. affect performance? Thanks.Mike
