Hi All,
Do I need to ask my question here or somewhere else? About the 90 elbow and securing muffler.

Rex, How have you got your regulator mounted? I just got mine and the instructions say it needs to be placed 3/4 to 1 inch from carberator. That's pretty close. Do you have it mounted solid someway or just supported by the fuel lines? Ron

It just hangs on the lines. I would say that the nipple on the Cline and the carb are about 1/4" apart inside the line. It's actually pretty close to the exhaust manifold, but I'll just keep an eye on it through the first dozen flights and look for signs of rubbing. If it does rub, I'll probably just zip tie the line from the tank to hold it away from anything. I love the idle and transition with the regulator on. I actually had it idling at less than 1400 rpm for over a minute, if I remember right. It's smooth at 1800.

Denter.

The muffler should not be secured with zip ties. The Saito 90 degree adapter in known for breaking when the stock muffler is attached.

I have a tank in my zero that is 2 1/4 inches too high; Jim at cline assured me his regulator would fix it. Haven't tried it yet, spring is coming late up here[&o].

Thanks Rex. I think supporting the regulator on the fuel lines should work for me too. Mine is probably about the same distence from the carb. as yours. Ron

Hi folks,

Just a quick question , how low should a .72 idle ?? I purchased mine used and am having a little trouble keeping it running around 2000 rpms . It will idle all day around 2300 rpms . Should I reset the carb to the stock settings and start over or is this about normal ?? Running YS 20/20 Wildcat turning 9900 rpms with an APC 14x4W and thats set rich. It actually runs really well with 10% Omega also, about 9500 rpms , just can't get the idle any lower.

OK, here it goes...
I started last year with two Saito 1.80. Monster of an engine. 6 flights a gallon of glow fuel. I have them in a Great Planes Super Stearman and a Hangar 9 Ultra Edge 540.
The only problem I had ever was a deadstick in the Edge.
I try to keep the engine running smoothly and verify the valve's gap periodically but... but...
I would like to know: what are the early indications of the engine running with an improper valve gap. The engine manual says to adjust it every two hours of flying.
More precisely:
1) What is the effect and the signs of the intake valve gap being too wide.
2) What is the effect and the signs of the intake valve gap being too small.
3) What is the effect and the signs of the exhaust valve gap being too wide.
4) What is the effect and the signs of the exhaust valve gap being too small.

And.... Which are the intake and the exhaust valves looking at the cylinder head from above and from the prop side?

Thank you guys....

I can't help it i have to.. I would imagine that if you look at the engine from any angle top side front whaterver. The nice chrome tube that comes out of the head is going to the carburator so thats were the engine sucks fuel into the engine. Intake valve would be located right above it and the side the exauhst pipe Comes out Would have the Exahust Valve right above it.

As far as Knowing Charteristics of to much gap not enough gap and the effect and the signs or symptoms the engine has. I can't say i never have adjusted the valves on mine. Have probably 8 hours on my .72 Saito. Stiill runnin Good.

but i'm sure the Experts will know what the Symptoms would be intresting to hear what they are..

What is wrong with 2300 RPM for idle?

If that is where it runs well, give it what it wants!

Edited to add:

If you get the idle too low, you are much more likely to stall the engine at the MOST inappropriate time - like when you throttle up to go around again, because your approach was too high, and you have now passed up the end of the runway, with a ditch and some trees directly ahead.
(Not to say that anything like THAT has ever happened to ME, you understand....... [&o])

The engines have all kinds of places where they like to idle. How much time have you run it? If it is under 2 gallons, then it may idle lower with some sort of reliability after a little more time on it. Maybe not.

For my .72, 2300 RPM is a good setting. It has idled at 1900 or less for a good period when I wasn't paying attention. I caught the low idle one day when the engine died out on landing and a long idle on final approach.

I could live with 2300 RPM on mine if I had to.

RC
Thanks for the reply.
What can I do to keep the clean lines on my cowl then? I have the entire exhaust fully enclosed on my WM P-51 now, and I love the look. I secured the muffler with two zip ties to the fuse, to keep it from vibrating too much (thinking that would support the alum. elbow).
Any ideas?????
Thanks a bunch,
Tom

I purchased it used , but it looked to have alot of fuel through it. I replaced the bearings and lifters , everything else seemed fine. I'm quite happy with how it runs , I guess I'll have to get it out to the field to see how it does.

I'm Saito Club member #552. I have a question whether any of my fellow club members have had good experiences with the dealer web site thebarnfloor.com. I'm considering buying a new JR radio and this site has good deals but I don't know its reputation. I'm sorry for asking this question on our Saito Club Forum; however, I find you guys to be a good source of information. I'm just trying to avoid any issues before hand. Thanks in advance for you responses

Hello Guys Im back for a little more help, the 220 that has given me a problem with not idleing below 3000 R's is doing a little better now that Ive redone the whole fuel system. I installed a 32 oz dubro tank with large clunk and 1/8 ID tubing, added a Perry VP-30 pressure pump. Now Im getting 8250 on the topend with a carbon 19/8 prop.(20.10 lbs. thrust) Low idle is at 2600, cant seem to get less than that. (2.6 lbs. thrust) I would like to get the reported #'s 1600 to 1800, What do u think about useing a larger prop to get lower idle rpm, and what pitch?
BTW Im useing power master 30% fuel.

Hi guys. I just aquired my 3rd Saito and this one was used. It's got about 2 1/2 gallons of Omega Cool 15% turned a 14x6 by previous owner. Problem is, he fiddled with the low speed needle and now the idle is unreliable. It's set either way too rich or way too lean. I'm going to have to straighten this mess out but can anyone give me a starting point to adjust from. My owner's manual says try 5 full turns out from closed position for high speed...which gives it a rich mixture for break-in. How many turns out from closed position for the low speed needle?? Just need a starting point and I can go from there. Thanks for any help.

BTW...I'm strictly gas (Zenoah) and 4 stroke glow...Saito only four stroke glow. Glad I found this thread.
