AJ, I sold some over the winter so I think I'm down to about 115 with 18 being Saitos. I'll list the Saitos'

2.20, 1.50S, 1.30 twin,1.25GK, 1.00GK, TS .90 Twin, .90 triple, .80 GK HC, (2) .62s, (2) .56s, one plain, one GK, .50, FA .45, FA .40, .40a, and two .30s, one plain and one GK. A 1.15 should arrive in a few days or weeks, not sure of the arrival date. I never owned a .65 or a 1.80 but owned two different .72s and owned a .91 GK which now belongs to w8ye. My goal next year is a Bruce Tharpe Super Flyin King with a Saito 4.50 radial. Maybe.

I finally got a home for my Saito 100 , a Hanfar 9 Twist 60 , Ipurchased the 100 after my 72 . The I went to the Toledo show looking for the home for the 100 and purchased a Frenzy. Well that lead me to my 1.25 Saito. Now that I have 2 new planes in boxes I really need to finish my Goldberg Tiger 60. I purchased that one to put my Super Tigre G90 on , so ... now with to many projects I need to finish something !!! I actually am courious about how much pull the two stroke is going to have. Up to last summer I never thought I'd buy a four stroke , quite pricy !! Now I have three ?? I am really impressed with the .72 , looking forward to firing up the 1.25

Andy,

You sound like a convert. We have all been there. It is hard not to fall for a four stroke. Something about the sound I think!!!! Soon, you will have 118 engines like Hobbsy.

I think its the torque , I still like to see how many rpm's I can pull out of a two stroke , but the pull of the four strokes is pretty awsome !! They do sound really cool too !!

I wonder who among us on RCU has the most engines? I'm probably up there with Hobbsy, but I don't have a real number to offer. Maybe less, maybe more. Many, many of them are NIB, but I do have a lot of used, usable/runnable engines and lots of partial engines (not considered for the number compared to Hobbsy). How about it fellas? I'll count mine if you'll count yours.

G'day Saito lovers. My first three four strokes were OS - 26 Surpass, 91 Surpass, 48 Surpass. Then I bought a second hand FA45 GK. It went into a Kadet Senior and I was a convert. Not that the OS engines were bad, there was just something special about the Saitos. I just liked the way they worked, sounded and looked. Not long after this, I sold everything and about 10 years later I bought the 45 back. It had been flying the Kadet all that time and had had at least two bad prangs but it was still going strong. I eventually gave it away and it is still going. Since then I have accumulated another 9 Saitos from a 40a to a 120. The 72, the 65 and the 100 get the most use in 2 Kadet Seniors and a Four Star 60. I have another 5 four strokes but of them, the only one that gets regular use is a Surpass 26 in a Dynaflyte Butterfly. An RCV 91CD is in a big trainer running in for use in a warbird some time. It will fit where the tall Saitos won't. I only have three two strokes and they get little use. Does this mean I should join Club Saito? The sound of my FA40a puttering past in my Balsa USA Taube 40 is just amazing. Powerful too.

O.K. Ed...I'll count mine (after I come back from flyin' )
At last count it was right around 200 counting the 35-40 car engines. (you mean model engines or just airplane engines?)

I think there are a few guys here that will easily beat that though...

Edit: So nobody else has seen the 1.25 with the larger fins yet?

the voltage is more critical for the RX, not the servos. the RX does not drop the voltage to 6 volts for the servos. over voltage can damage the RX. Hitec says - MAX voltage of rx and servos is 6v. people use 5cell nicad or nimh. at full charge they are well over 6 volts. a 2 cell lipo is well over 7 volts, it needs to be regulated to use. MPI sells the miracle switch, i use the 6v version, about $40, it's a safety switch (if anything mechanical happens to the switch, it just stays on, instead of turning off) and regulates to 6v. go to their website.http://www.maxxprod.com/mpi/mpi-28.html

Hi

I have a Saito FA65 that has a bad main bearing. I have never taken one apart before. Do I have to pull the prop driver off before I knock out the crank??

Thanks
That looks like the new one that my friend gave me to use as the replacment...the tag sez SAI125a01A (not the GK version though )
It has an increased fin area...and makes the engine appear much larger...more like a 1.50 size jug...and the fins are taller behind the rocker covers.
He got it through our LHS for 109.99

G'day Thanks for that. I have changed my avitar to a pic of my Four Star 60 which I build from a kit and covered in Solatex. It originally had a Saito 72 and I thought it was fine but when my son flew it, he said it needed "more" so I bought a Saito 100 and it is now amazing. Mostly I fly my two Kadets - a Kit built one which originally had a Saito 56 but now has a 72 (because I wanted to use the 56 in a smaller model) and an ARF which has a 65. Both are overkill but fun as a result and the 65 is so heavy that I did not need to add any lead. I gather that the old 65 is also the basis of the old 80 and 91 which is why it is so heavy and large? Saito are doing a really good job of getting their engines to shed weight these days. The little 30 and 40a are really powerful but also very light. All the best. Mike.

Well, I finally maidened my Super Stearman with a Saito 1.80. Everything went well, and the saito ran great. It's still running on the rich side, but I'm gonna leave it alone untill I have a little more fuel through it. I had 1 deadstick, I thought I ran out of fuel, but after a perfect landing, and walking 150 yards to retrieve my plane, I found that the exhaust had rotated, and the pressure line was pushed into the cowl, and split. I run a Cline regulator, so I figured the tank lost pressure and that's why it died. I reattached the pressure line, and had another successfull flight. When I taxied back, I noticed that I couldn't see the muffler hanging under the plane. The engine is inverted, and I used a 90 degree, the stock headpipe, and stock muffler. With this setup, the muffler points streight back and lays tight against the belly with about 3/8 inch of clearance, dead center between the landing gear. The 90 broke and I lost my muffler and headpipe. I was suprised that the plane ran with the Cline and no muffler pressure, though the tank is about an inch higher than the spraybar. I never heard it or saw it, and I must have been flying that way for a while, since there was a nice burned spot on my firewall. I guess I'll have to try the 90 from RC Specialties. Oh, I did have a little trouble getting it to shut down. I tried to kill it with the throttle trim, but the thing just wanted to keep running. I've heard it idle at 1350 rpm, and I would guess that it was running at 1100 rpm max, maybe 1000. I thought about grabbing the spinner to get it to quit, but it finally died after chugging for about a minute. All in all, a good day.

The Saito 65 is actually heavier than the 80 and the 80 is heavier than the 91.

The 65 is of ringed ABC construction and the chrome plated brass sleeve makes it heaviest of all

The 80 and 91 are ringed AAC construction with chrome plating directly onto the aluminum cylinder wall.

The cylinder wall is thinner on the 91 than the 80 because of the larger bore.

These three cylinders are the same size on the outside.

While we're on the subject of cylinders...I'll just add one or two more tidbits about that new 1.25 jug that I installed on my friends engine. It appears to be quite a bit larger, but is only 4 grams heavier than the original [8D]
The valve angles are greater as well...and a little more seperation between the rocker stands, so I would say that the combustion chamber shape is consequently a little different as well.
I will have to wait for him to run it before I can get any comparison r.p.m. figures.

ORIGINAL: proptopeat that though...

Edit: So nobody else has seen the 1.25 with the larger fins yet?

I have seen and own the newer version. I think they are available all over now.

Frankly, I hadn't even noticed until I saw the posts here. Then I checked it over (it is fully cowled) and while the engine is the newer version I thought it was small_____but that's because I've been flying the 180's and took out a YS 110-S and replaced it with the newer 125 design.
Trust me, by comparison the apparent size is "small".

Typically Saito though as I set the needles in my hand, then installed it and ran it up. My own settings gave me a 2000rpm steady idle from the first start and the TNC 'kissed' 9500 before I dialed it down to 9150/9250 on an APC 15x8.
Well below the YS (800 rpm) but what a pleasure to handle!
I've got a narrow cowl and the YS will destroy it with one kick back (pulls like a mule and kicks like one too.)

Sorry guys, I have had a bunch of Saitos and not a thumper in the bunch. This one is on a Hyde 110 mount (same mounting dimensions and drive washer measurement as the YS) so it is a drop in save for the throttle control. (and moving my pack forward)

blw,
we've had this exchange before but I put it at 4000 and it hardly moves the mount.
I run Wildcat 30/18 all synthetic ____don't know what to tell you other than I've yet another Saito that is silky smooth right from the first start????????

So far I've yet to see one that was otherwise, but then again our break in procedures are quite different as I change the factory settings to my own before the first start. Then as you may remember, I get steady settings at both ends, shut down and go fly.

I'm steady and ready for flight at <6oz. of fuel. The top end still has a slight pulse between 9150 and 9250 but one flight and that should be gone. ****at least every Saito so far has done that for me.

This time I had really set up to see the difference between the YS110-S and the Saito 125.(both on 30%)
The 800 rpm startled me. I was expecting something more along the 400 to 450 rpm max. max.
The feel of the stab pushing on my legs would lead me to believe that they are closer to = than the TNC tach tells me. Flight tests are next.

That will tell me more of the real performance story.

No one would call the YS a "Gentleman", but power it does make!
Unfortunately cowls are a bit expensive at $40/50 a crack. (make that a 'shatter')

Back on topic (sorry to run on) I think the newer cylinder design is close to everywhere on new engines. At least it is where I am.

bawls,

I wish I could help you with an exact date but, as I said in my post I didn't realize I had one until I read these posts. (it is not a GN version as I'm partial to the all aluminum appearance) .

The LHS is closed for the Holiday but I will give the store Mgr. a call tomorrow and see if he can tell me when he received the shipment which included mine.
The LHS displays the GN versions of the Saito line and that one is the previous fin design.

I'll post back tomorrow with the information I'm given.

BETTER YET a certainty! As I picked the engine up on 5/13 it had to be before 5/12/08.

Some engines break in differently than others. We've seen that from time to time here from what has been reported. I probably could have leaned my 1.25 out earlier than I did, but decided to let it run more on the stand. It is a fine running engine now. I'm sure they will run smoothly if you lean them out right away to get near the actual needle valve settings you would use in the air, but I end up breaking them in like Saito says to do.
