RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hello Fellas!
I am signing up for the club! I have a little .82A on the way. I bought the velocity stack and the right angle adapter for it too. It's going on an Extremeflight Extra 58" (beautiful plane, btw). I am thinking of also getting the cline regulator since the tank is fairly far back maybe I'll try it first and see. I have not seen any data yet from people using the Vess sport props for this engine. I have a 14X6 and a 15X6 coming for the engine. I thought that the 15X6 might be a bit much for it on 15% nitro, but the prop is supposed to be fully half the weight of the APCs, so maybe it will do allright?

Congratulations on the purchase of an Eighty Two. I'm sure you will enjoy it.
It is unlikely the 15-6 will work well for you.
Lighter weight prop means higher idle speed also

isaacslaw,
My .82s run very well on 13x6 Pro-Zingers, also on 15% nitromethane. These are wooden props and the engines are both on Bruce Tharpe Ventures. The planes are 72" span sport models...very similar to a 4-Star 60. A plastic prop may perform better. I just like wood. w8ye is correct about the 15x6...that is a very large prop for an .82.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ive run a 15x6 PZ, JZ and Xoar on the .82 before. Took em right back off too, A 14x4w works great for 3d, apc 14x6 for IMAC style.
Some run a 15x4W on it. But from the videos Ive seen it loads it up fairly decent.
I have lots of wood props now and still go right back to the APC's.
14x6 APC 10,000 on 30% (not my number, word of mouth)
14x4w 11,000 rpms on 30%
14x6 Pro Zinger 9200rpms on 30%
14x6 JZ 9000 rpms on 30%
15x6's were way down in the 8's and just didn't run very good.
BTW http://www.vimeo.com/1109195 .There is a thread on the Extra in the 3D forum.
A short full flight video is in there too.

I have close to 4 gallons on it and it always had a little tick to the engine. but now its a louder tick...
the engine is running good... idles good makes good power. is this tick normal ?

Thanks, fellas. I also have an apc 14X4 and apc 14X6 coming now as well. I will run a gallon through it and maybe post some of the vess numbers. I am curious about these props as they receive such glowing reviews from the petrol guys, so I gues we'll see.

Jeff, maybe we need to clarify, are you asking about Performance Specialties mufflers or RC Specialties TurboHeader, if the TurboHeader I can vouch for it enhancing performance on all Saitos except the 1.25 and for it staying in place. The 1.25 has two peculiarities, the TurboHeader does not give it a boost in RPM and a velocity stack knocks off 200 rpm.

Just Curious,
Why does the turboheader not work in the 1.25 and why does the velocity stack knock off 200 rpm?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
The velocity stack normally used on the Saitos like the 82 is most likely too small for the 125
Saito Golden Knight 100 110 & 125 engines do not come from the factory with a velocity stack

Slopoke,
Compared to the other Saito's, the 1.25 muffler is quite large allowing for better exhaust flow. There are other factors involved but I can't get into that. Let's just say it is better tuned from the factory.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
use a chicken stick - 1" dowel, a pc of heater hose shoved on to it is what i use. never put your hand on a prop. i was watching a video recently of a club open house, several fliers w/gas engines hand flipped w/o even a glove. i always thought a leather glove was a minimum for that. i will flip over an engine occasionally, but, never w/o a chicken stick,... now. like most, i learned the hard way. most saitos have some real grunt, that .82 will give a good kick, for sure. for safety, an electric starter can't be beat, however, i have damaged a couple crankshafts (os .46 stroke) due to hydrolock. i'm more careful about that.

Chicken sticks I had one once, but could never get the enact of using it so I figured it out years ago if it can't be started with a starter motor then it is telling you that something is wrong and it needs to be checked out, and normally it is the ole faithful glow plug gone bad. I have learn here that the FA 182T engine is one you give a lot of respect to because it seriously likes to kick back, because I was trying to start it by hand and with the glove on it still broke skin just enough to say I gottcha so I'll be sticking with my starter motor.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I just put my velocity stack on my .82 and do not see a marked difference in static rpms.
Is said to help fuel economy, I have not really noted that one either. Im getting long flights as it is so Im happy.
You cant beat the Turbo Header. Its worth every penny and more [:-]

saito 220
as soon as i hit 5 gallons the idle went for a crap
the idle was just over 2000rpm and i was happy with that.
now its the same thing i have been reading about... 2800+ and now where near smooth.
I hope i found the problem
it looks like the servo linkage is kinda gimped... the way it it i can close the carb and the servo does not move.
it looks like its just a geometry problem.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Well i'm back to ask a question again that i'm sure will be answered in very short order. I'm tired of using a spinner on my .62 Saito and .72 want to put a prop hub nut on both. is the prop hub nut for the .72 saito the same size as for the .62? i plan to buy one for both of my saitos. And i did ask this question a while back for the .72 and appriciate the input i got for the .72 just want to make sure i get the right one for the .62 and then no more spinners.
I'm wanting to put prop hubs on my other planes as well a .46 Evloution engine. and the 2 os .61 engines and my GMS 120 but i guess i woud have to go to other threads to find out what fit's the other engines i have.. I'm just sick of spinners and want something that will last and i dont have to cut to make a different prop fit..

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXL735&P=M
i notice there are 2 a brass one and an aluminum one. but mainly want to make sure i get the right size for my engine's
Thanks Appriciate any input..

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi all.
I'm still new to this 4 stroke thing and I've got a question.
I've got a Saito 72 I've been running in on my Pulse XT 40 for the last two months and it's had around 4 litres of fuel run through her (just over a gallon) at 10% mix.
Now she runs OK for the most part, idle is still high and 'chunky' (haven't tried to set the low speed needle yet) and she will die if left idling for too long, even after flight.
Transition is ok, if a little burpy around the mid point, and power is good, around 9 to 10k with a 13x8 (rpm varies a fair bit).
What I want know is a ball park figure of when I should start tweaking the low speed needle, and roughly how long do the Saitos take till they are 'run in' to a reliable level??
This engine is destined for my Sig Somethin Extra kit which will be finished soon, and I really want this engine running smooth to compliment the SSE.
Any info would be muchly apprecited.
Cheers

Krener- Your engine is past due for setting the low speed needle valve, and you should find that it will run a lot smoother when you do it. Also, look for good fuel economy. The engine should be just about completely broken in and already running reliably if tuned right.
I've seen a SSE with a Saito .72.

Krener, get out your tach, peak the HS needle, and start leaning the LS needle. Once it's leaned as far as you can, and still getting good transition, richen the HS for flight, and I bet it seems like a whole new engine. You'll get a lot longer flights, too.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
A question for anyone who may know (Hobbsy?) Over in the seaplanes forum I started a thread on converting the E-flight Beaver to glow. This is the plane I'm puting my .40a into. A guy asked if this was the .40 that came out in 2002, or the NEW new 40a. is there another 40a? is there an older .40 that came out in 2002? When DID they start selling this little jewel?
As always...Thanks!
