Thank you Bill for tossing me into Club Saito.
I flew my Cap 232 today with the 82 and Reset all the needles...I got real smooth transition from idle to full throttle and back...my idle's at 2300rpm plane does sit still on grass field and blacktop runway...never deadsticks so I'm saying it's all good Thanks for the advice and tips though I appreciate it.

I tried Krylon on a cowl, but it wasn't fuel proof. Is the baking what does the trick? Of course, I couldn't do that with a cowl anyway.

BF:

I've tried the Krylon with inconsisteent results. Some few were fine, but most were not suitable with alcohol fuels, and any nitro content just made it that much worse.

The polyurethan paints seem mostly fine, but they also tend to go on too thick, not good on an engine.

Bill.

The paint to use is VHT brake caliper paint. You need to clean the engine first right before you paint it with VHT Caliper Cleaner.

Some places want $12 for a can of the paint.

You must bake it when you are done.

Enjoy,

Jim

My 2 cent's worth on engine paint. I use Auto Zone Dupli-Color Engine Enamel high temp. paint. I have not had any problem with glow fuel and you do not have to bake it.

It must be fuel proof... Have you tried it on a model?

I think some of the problems with oil based alkyd enamels such as Krylon, Rustoleum, etc. is that they must be fully cured. Some are a mix of alkyd and lacquer paints, especially Krylon and other fast drying enamels. They may feel dry to the touch, even pass the fingernail test, sand well etc. But until the oil has oxidized, they will not be fuel proof.

My experience with Krylon has been faultless. YMMV.

I've found that Rustoleum (Tremclad here in Canada) is fuel proof after it cures for about a week, but Krylon never became fuel proof. I guess you could call it fuel resistant.

The only thing that I have used it on is a Saito GK that I had cleaned with anti-freeze and a lot of the black finish had come off. I have not had any problem with glow fuel on this paint.

Just got a Saito 82 for Christmas. Will be my first 4 stroke (experience-wise, I am about ready to solo on a .40 trainer). I've got a Kadet Senior ARF I'd like to put it in, and I'm considering mounting it sideways or inverted, so as not to spoil the look of the cowl.

I'm not in a particular hurry (famous last words ...), and plan to take my time and do it right. Anyone out there in "SaitoLand" tried this combo?

Thanks,

Lee

That's a lot of engine for a Kadet Senior. You wont need to go more than half throttle.

4-Stokes aren't as prone to flooding as 2-strokes, so I'd mount it inverted.

A .46, as recommended in the instructions, is too small for it anyway. Go for it.

I have a saito 72 on my cadet and i run it on 30% wildcat fuel , the saito 82 will be a good combo i wish i had bought it instead of the 72. This is a big plane and it will handle the 82 , especially on vertical performance. I would mount it inverted there isnt enough room for sideways.

The Saito 82 will be a very good engine on the Kadet.

You don't have to run it wide open. As already mentioned a four stroke can run slow alll day and never load up.

Kadets are a little unusual in that they have a light wing loading. I've seen them fly time and again with OS 35 FP. However most I have seen have a 60 two stroke or something bigger than a 56 four stroke in them. The one at the field yesterday had a ST G60 in it from the early 70's. It wasn't overpowered. If anything it was about right.

Enjoy,

Jim

The arf version is heavier than the kit built ones of years ago. The arfs have much larger control surfaces and more ply within.

I've only ever flown the kit version. I said a lot, not overpowered. Maybe I should rephrase; if you want it fly it like a trainer, then you wont need more than 1/2 throttle.

Well, the old kit version with the OS 35 FP would take a couple hundred feet to get off the ground and then he would fly it full bore the whole time. It would loop if you dove first to pick up all the speed you could. Seems like it was three channel? [sm=sunsmiley.gif]

What can I do to get more horsepower for my 100? Of coursemore horsepower makes more RPMs, which would make a more efficient engine. Don't really need that much more. It's on a Funtana 40, but more power is always good!

This question might have already been answered in some way or for.

Valve timing, compression ratio, valve clearance. Adjusting those could just make things a little more powerful. Mr. Robinson, what have you found to be the best valve clearances on each intake and exhaust? Different clearances or the same for each?

Like I said, I know for my application, I don't need the extra power, but I don't want the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" type deal!!

Thanks for your help. This thread is so informative!!

Michael:

Best power on a Saito is with the valves set at minimum clearance.

The problem in setting them with a feeler is that the springs are a lot weaker than you, so it's difficult to judge when they are right. My normal method is a dial indicator. Failing that, a 0.002" feeler, if left with just a little drag will get you close. Or, use what's shown in the picture. Leave that one just with no drag. As you see, it's 0.038 mm, 0.04 mm is what you want to get.

Don't worry about getting them too tight, if you do the engine wont start. No compression when the valves don't close.

Bill.

PS: Both valves are set at the same clearance. wr.

Ok thank you very much. My dad is really into getting the most power you can. I will show him later, when everyone wakes up!! THanks again. Right now, they are both set to the feeler that came with it. What would that make the clearance be set at .002? I think that's what it is. But that's what they are set at right now is .002, or whatever the feeler that comes with it is set at.

Thanks again

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Lee,

I have a World Models Super Frontier Senior, which is a Kadet Sr. knock-off. I have a Saito .65 in mine and think it's just about perfect. The extra engine weight is needed as these models tend to come out tail-heavy.

I think you'll enjoy the .82 in your Sr.

Good flying,

hi Lee, since i have never owned a kadet i dont know how a inverted saito will mount in comparison to the fuel tank, but if the carb is lower than the tank there will be flooding, the lower the carb in relation to the tank the worse.just something to think about

sounds like a great combo, youll love your saito

good luck!!

So far, I've never seen a Kadet Sr with a inverted engine
