In the 72 the dot goes towards the front of the engine, there is a slight difference when assembling the wrong way and it is perceptible.
Was that on a NEW connecting rod?
You cannot rely on the dot. Some rods do not even have a dot. The dot may be on either side of the rod.
The important factor is the side of the the big end of the rod with the radius in the bore. This side goes towards the crankshaft. The other side will have funny looking swirl marks on the face where it has rubbed the back plate on an engine that has been run. The quote below is the correct way to go about the installation of the rod. The dot when present has some other purpose than which way the rod goes.
Original: Ken6PPC
The dot goes back in the same direction it came off. I don't think the position of the dot really "means" anything, because I have opened up identical Saito's, and found the dots on the connecting rods in different positions. One of my Saito rods didn't have a dot at all!

I don't use Cool Power in any of my Saito engines.

Fuels I have used in the last 10 years in Saitos has been Omega, Rich's Brew with the 75/25 oil package and Wildcat Super Premium with the 72/25 oil set up.

There are many fuels that will run well in a Saito but I'm a firm believer in using a little castor oil in the fuel.

In the last four years I have been using 15% nitro but with the nitro crisis I'll probably go back to 10% in the future.

The bearing in the big end of the rod will have a relief or a chamfer on the side that goes next to the crankshaft, it fits against a filet (or radius) on the crankpin.
This is the radius bore or a chamfer described by Hobbsy and w8ye.
I was confused with the dot, but I remember the chamfer that Hobbsy told me about a year a go and it just came to my mind when W8ye mentioned the same.

Hey beaver how's the one eighty going? and can you tell me how it performs in your 105"aeroplane??..i'm looking for GOOD performance out of a 90" citabria if i can find one with an fg36 engine. The 82a just had it's first rich full throttle run on the workshop bench swinging a 14x6 apc sport prop.Used to use chainsaws on a regular basis no worries but this thing scares me.Sounds like it wants to suck the carpet up,shred it,and blow it out the back window.Do you think i'm being a bit of a girls blouse about it or i'm just to old and past it?? Am i too old to run a fg36 in without fainting???

ps got 7900 wot rich as

Hey O man, how much total time on it now? Here's mine turning the same prop on 15% WildCat. It turns about 240 more with a TurboHeader on it.

That 10 minutes is the most important part, so you're done with that, from that point on I do 10 minutes each at 5,000, 5,000, 6,000, I set the LS neelde at the 20 minutes point, so give it a good 40 minutes and go fly. The stock glow plug will still be working 3 years from now and maybe 5. Enjoy, Dave

Thanks Andy, I started a build thread in Kit Building, it hasn't created much interest though, kit too old maybe.

One thing is for sure is that it will have more power available than what it needs

Hey Paul,

The 180 will be just the ticket for it, as it is for my 1/4 Citabria swinging a Master airscrew 18x6 prop. You will have tons of power with the 180, you wont need to use it but it there when you need it.

Make sure you buy a pair of 6 inch Dubro Balloon tires!! It'll look really cool and different to all the other cubs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ux4y...eature=related

With the extra power try glider towing too.

Cheers, Paul

Ok guys im in need of some major help, I am running a new saito 180 in a twist 150.The engine mounts with the carb slightly higher then the center of the tank, almost at the top. It runs ok but I get typical surging because of the tank being off center so to solve the problem I installed a cline regulator which I have have major troubles with. After replacing the diaphragm and adjusting the arm up down and up down the only way I got it to run above half throttle was to have the arm so far up the needle doesn’t fully seat. Therefore poring fuel all over the place when not running. So today I called Jim cline and his advice was to set the regulator back to the way it came (arm even with the case) and open the low end needle so that the main needle will be able to let more fuel in. sounded great so I did. with the same outcome runs great up to half throttle and dies anywhere above. I have the low and high end cranked wide open. It is starving for fuel. If I restrict the exhaust building up more pressure in the tank it sees to help but this is not a good solution. The last bit of info is that the tank is right behind the engine. I am at wits end with this thing and would be greatly appreciative of some help. Thanks guys

A couple of years ago I was advised by Wm Robison to lean the low end on my then new 82a that was surging. It solved the problem. The engine still runs flawlessly after 2 or 3 gallons.

My tank was about even with the sparaybar with the engine running inverted. That could be a difference.

How much might a 125 unload in the air, pulling a 9lb warbird? I am using a 14x7 3-Blade prop, getting around 9400 on the ground. In the air, WOT sounds quite a bit faster. Sounds good! But I don't want to over-rev it.

I have a 15x7 3-Blade but it seemed to bog it a bit on the bench. It's been a while since I've tried that prop, and the engine continues to break in. I've got about 6 gallons through it and it keeps running better and better.

You might try the 15 X 7 again and see if it still bogs

Regarding the 180 with a Cline, this is not the first time there has been talk of not enough fuel.

Maybe more pressure is the answer?

I have the same engine and cline pressure system in my Citabria... with 32oz tank mounted back in the cabin on the CG. Now have no problems at all with this set up.

What's your set up for the "venting" and "refueling" lines in the Cline setup?? Is your press reg mounted at the carby? I had a small air leak at my Dubro refueler ( don't they all?? ) and had symptoms like your describe.

My fix was a new O-ring set for the dubro. Also I am using an aftermarket ( YS type metal ) one way valve.

Any help?
Paul

You Need an Iron Bay for the 1.80 ,I lost some RPM's with Cline but still did not seem fuel deprived. The Cline's holes are just too small IMO . I fell off from 9200rpm to 8700rpm
the direct effect of the Cline has not been proven yet as my Iron Bay is needing service. When I get another Iron Bay Ill know for sure.

Also Make sure the Cline is right on the nipple of the carb. BTW I have had no issues with the Cline on my 1.80 except for the RPM Drop which could be other issues also.
I still would recommend the Iron Bay for these larger engines.

Mike
