Just bought my first Saito - a 180 and going to use it in a Dynaflite Super Decathalon. Can anyone tell me if a Hyde mount is overkill for this combo and if it is, any recommendations? I look forward to reading the daily posts and thanks again

I'll second what has been said... rebuilding is an option. I imagine that it will be expensive as you probably did some damage to the cylinder walls too (just a hunch) but putting a brand new top end on it would probably not be as expensive as a brand new engine. Just make sure that the cam gear and the valves are undamaged first...

Is there an air seal inside the high speed needle assembly of the Saito .72? Is it replaceable? My engine, with about 100 hours of operation, now peaks at 1 turn out from fully closed. The needle is very sensitive. Any help will be appreciated.

Close sensitive needle can be caused by the glow plug and by bad fuel or too big of prop
Saito 72's are bad about leaking between the intake manifold and the head. This will make the needle almost impossible to set
There is a o-RING inside the brass part of the needle valve that goes into the carb. It's called the spray bar and you usually have to replace the spray bar to fix it.

Thanks. Its probably the spray bar. There is almost no friction when I turn the needle valve until I reach the rachet. But I will also replace the plug just to be safe. The prop is pretty much what I started with when the engine was new, an APC 13 x 6.
Another question. When going to the Horizon Hobby site, They mention that the "baseline" prop for the saito .72 is a 13 x 8 turning at 9800 rpm. Has anyone actually seen a saito .72 turn a 13x8 at this rpm? If so, what magic prop is it?

I fly at WindWalkers RC http://www.wwrcc.com/ on a private airfield (Woodfield Air Park in Caroline county) and also at Thornburg with another club.
I have a Saito FA-180, a FA-150, a couple FA-100 and a couple FA-56. Do you think the 180 would do the job on the Wilga. I fly very scale (read that typically slow) and probably would not be towing anything.
I've played/flown the Wilga on RealFlight 3.5 and love the plane.

only saito makes it.I like the look of the hyde mount in that it looks like you can get the engine well back close to the firewall and i need that when i add a relatively heavier engine re my extra 330.The mount is easy to understand just follow the instructions and don't worry that your spinner will wobble around a bit.I've had more movement out of glass filled nylon engine mounts,it's minimal.

Jim, I'm posting this here rather than in the Saito .80 thread, I received the new gasket set for my 1.15, I onlu needed the cam housing gasket. In the "Saito .80 Bearing Replacement Thread" we were discussing the timing mark on the cam and the index hole in the intake cam base. I made up a little tool to use the index hole in the cam to hold the timing while lowering the cam box into the crankcase. Bill Robison made one of all metal, I made mine from a drill bit and a piece of throttle wire guide from an ARF where I moved the throttle to the other side of the fuse. The drill bit is a perfect fit in the cam and the outside diameter of the throttle wire guide is a perfect fit in the lifter bore.

Got a Saito .72 that keeps pushing the o-ring on the intake tube out...on the jug. What can I do to keep it in the jug? I've replaced it 2 times today. This cause deadsticks 3 times. The last time I replaced it, the engine didn't deadstick....until I ran out of fuel. Anybody ever had this problem?

I would recommend an adel clamp with a hard wood block as a stand off. You can get adel clamps at the local automotive parts store but they usually have a large bolt hole. Go to a local airport and find an FBO (fixed base operator) they are the ones that sell the fuel. The aviation adels have a smaller hole. Take the muffler with you for sizing. Make sure it is anchored to the firewall well. This should solve your problem.

Found the perfect size at Home depot in the electrical department next to the wire ties!
3/4" does the trick with the 1.00 size
nice tight fit. looks good will see how it holds up at the field today.
Have finally gotten smart with losing mufflers in this plane .
drilled a 1/32" hole at the very bottom of the outlet and safety wired it to the firewall

Thanks for all the good information guys, I now have my Saito FA40a back together. I know see what you mean about the guide hole in the cam. I think that I have the timing correct, the valves dont hit the piston when I turn the enging over by hand. I'll try to start her soon.....

I am getting ready to purchase a few cases of fuel..over the winter I ended up wit a few saitos..I usually ran 15% plane....should i run 15% heli fuel for the extra oil? the 2 strokes will run fine on either..
