Thanks, chaps.
My figures sound about right, then, Slopoke, considering that I am using a coarser pitch and only 5% nitro.

I put the 13 x 6 on my 80 in the cub like you guys suggested.. Works great. My question is can I use a wide prop to help slow it down for landing? I have a kinda short runway

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just got back from the maiden flight of my old version of the Hanger 9 Cub. I got it used with a Saito Fa 56 for an awesome deal. This is my first four stroke and after seeing how this one performed I'm going to get an Fa 62 for my new H 9 Cub.

Four bangers are addicting . Once you feel the power you won't want to go back if your like me . The only 2-stokes I will ever buy again will be gas only . As far as Saito's are concerned , I need a support group !!!

w8ye,
I finally figured out the timing for the 270T. You need to line up the dimple on the cam gear directly into the crankcase when the right piston is at TDC for the right cylinder timing, then rotate through 360 degrees and line up the "line" on the left cam gear (not the dimple). I did find a line on this gear in the end, and it was 90 degrees around from the dimple, thus confirming my suspiscion that the engine was 90 deg out of time.
Thanks for you help.
James.

On my 182TDP I never found the line on the left cam but finally kept moving the cam until I got the overlap period centered on TDC of the left cyl. It runs great.

Anyone have a 170 that loses a cylinder between idle and 3/8 stick? Does your 170 drop a cylinder at all?
Thanks, Pete

I've been running a 1.70 for a couple of years now and had a time getting this problem sorted out. You need a good onboard glow driver and it must be powered by NiCd batteries - NOT NiMH. The other thing that will cause this problem is too rich a setting on the low speed needle.

I have a new Ultra Stick Lite 120. One of my club members has a Saito 180 in a GP Stearman that he wants to convert to Gas and I can probably get a good deal on the engine. Is the 180 too large for this model? I must confess that I have never owned a Saito or any other four stroke. I have a Jett BSE 120L that I can also use that is an Excellent engine, no hassle "flip and fly".
Did Saito make different model 180's ? Good Bad......
Thanks, and I appreciate your advice on this engine/plane combo.

Only silver and black ones
Some of the different years will have machined or cast mufflers.
Steel or plastic throttle arms
Other than that they are all the same.
The 180 has only been around about 10 yrs

Let me guess which one you're losing: I bet a Coca~Cola that it's the one on the lower left as you face the engine.

I'll definitely second that!! A McDaniel glow driver for radials is a good one. It pulses 4.8 volts so you can leave it on through several flights and not burn the plugs out or sap the battery too quickly. you can also couple it to the throttle so it turnsoff at a point that you setup depending on your pref. I putmine on an aux channel soI can lite 'em up at will...handy for a high speed restart of a single or dual cylinder flame out. Also NiCd is the ticket...they'll last me 4 or 5 12 min flights, on through the entire flight. NiMH last less than one flight. Something to do with the high amp draw on each pulse even though it's a very short duration...measured in milsec's.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Flew my cub again tonight. The one with the 20.00 saito 80 GK in it..lol..Idles great peak rpm is good. I get a surge when I am putting around at half throttle..Never dies though..Oh and a very good call on the 14x4 w prop..Stops it good on my short runway

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hi All,
Last sunday, I broke my Saito 115. It's run very well . I used the Hobbsy break in method:
10 min 4000 rpm - HS 5 turns open
10 min 5000 rpm
10 min 6000 rpm
Set the HS to peak ans setthe LS.
5min6500 rpm
10 min7000 rpm
Fuel: Omega 10% Nitro /17% oil (Blend Castor and syntetic)
Prop: Master 15X8
Tach: Mini Tach H9
HS peak : 8800 rpm > richen: 8500 rpm
LS: 2000 ~ 2300 rpm
Now, I'll put it inverted on my Spitfire and run again
Good flies !!!
