Default RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !

Thanks Paul,

Should I buy one brand new from the hobby store / online store like towerhobbies or can I get away with a second hand engine on rcuniverse that is still new in box. I dont want an engine that has been run before. i would like to be the one to break it in. How do Y.S. engines do?

I only have experiance with two strokes.(thats why I have the questions) My buddies with the bigger planes got kicked from the field since they had a displacement greater than 1.20.The club no longer lets any plane fly bigger than a 1.20 engine due to safety.

Thanks again,
Greg

Snowboard , I was going to say 1.25 saito till I read you clubs new rule . Don't know how its set up but the rule sounds lame .

Y.S. 110 would be a winner. Whats the flying weight of the plane ? Guys in my club run them in the mustang pylon racers and they do about 140MPH . They swear by them but I like a quite motor . There also supercharged from the get go

Quito , Hope you get'r fixed . Can't imagine flying at 10000 ft . .

Thanks McChicken,

The weight is going to be around 8 pounds. Most likely a little under. The rule was passed because my friend had 150cc 3-d planes and some members thought the way he flew was dangerous since our field is close to the city and there are a lot of buildings and sports fields around our field. They made a rule saying you cannot fly a plane with any two stroke engine above .91 cu in or a 1.20 cu in four stroke. The members dont want to loose our lease on our field like we did years ago. Is a y.s. going to last as long as a saito?

Thanks,
Greg

No.

The odds are against a YS running as long as a Saito before it needs major tinkering, or being returned for factory repairs. This opinion may cause some YS owners to get upset, but it's just true. Also, the Saito is a better engine for someone starting out with 4 strokes. Yes, the YS puts out more power, but it does so at the expense of probably needing more expensive fuel, and problems with the high parts count inside of the engine.

The 1.25 is a very good engine.

I agree somewhat with BLW . The guys that race these motors run up to 60% nitro in them and are always having problems with them cause there ringing them out . But the ones that run 20-30% nitro and just have them in sport flyers have no more problems with them then a Saito owner has which is next to none . There is a new learning curve with the YS since you have a midrange adjustment too . There are more moving parts . The racers are the only ones I ever see tinkering or tearing apart stuff at the field on a YS .

I do tease them though and say my Saito is 3 yrs old and all I fool with is the top end screw .

hello i am new to this forum i just picked up a saito 125gk for my leo f3a, and it is my first 4 stroke. i ran 60min brake in at 5 turn out on the needle , and now started to lean it out , i think the low end is still to rich , is engin shaking at idel is that normal at idel to a bit over idel, the first flight was good but i could not tell if it was working good. i tacked it at 8500 rpm with a apc 16x6 is that the proper rpm or should i as said lean it to max rpm then richen it 300 rpm, well getting off track , on the second flight i leaned the low a bit still grat transition but when i went to fly the saito shut off  on take off 10 feet off the ground and landed with the wheel pant threw the wing, any sugestions will be aprecated.on proper ajustments.and rpm settings

You need to start over again adjusting the low end.

When you get the engine broken in and the idle set correctly, it will run as smooth as any engine that size.

All of the ones I've been around caused problems after a while. I think they all were sent back to YS with hefty repair bills. I know one guy who flies about 6 of them and his all run fine, but he seems to have the aptitude to work on them and wouldn't admit having to do anything to them.

My Saito .56 ran often year round for a couple of years and I didn't touch the high speed or low speed.

You may wanna consider that the although the YS is probably more powerful than the Saito 115, The YS weighs alot more....

YS FZ110-S weighs 730grams opposed to the
Saito FA-115 weighs only 586grams.

Hmmm I'd go the Saito personally

If you plan on keeping the engine several years, the Saito will be a better value because they are not as sophisticated

I bet if you look around on RCU buy/sell you could find a new or close to new Saito120 . Check out craigslist too . I got an awesome deal from a RCU ad on a barely used 115 . Then you get the most motor in a saito and stay within your rules .

You must understand that comparing a Saito 1.15 to a YS 1.10 is like comparing apples to oranges. It simply isn't possible. The Saito does not come close to producing as much power as the YS 1.10,. which allegedly produces power very similar to a Saito 1.50. Furthermore, the YS 1.10 isn't fussy about where you mount the fuel tank. The Saito 1.15 is and must be equipped with a third party fuel pump or pressure regulator kit.

These engines are vastly different. The Saito 1.10 compares more favorably to an OS or Magnum four-stroke of equal displacement, NOT the YS 1.10. Some folks like to pretend that the Saito and YS are on par with simple minor variations between the two brands. Not true in the slightest.

Hey thanks for your input there Ed.... Suppose it is just like a Ford vGM petrolhead Forum where some dude is asking which is a better V8 to put in his Honda.

I would have Laser four strokes over any if I had a costless and avaliable choice, but instead for me my Saito 180and 150 have been the best aeroplane engines I'vehad the pleasure of operating.

82 is flying
just need more air time on it to really smooth her out.
you just have to love these little engines
last tach reading was 9400 with a APC 14x4W and 15% Cool Power
I love that Saito 82 /APC14x4W combination. I've been flying that for about 3 years and love it. Sold the plane about a month ago and just got a new 82 for Father's day gift.

Also have an old 91(about 15 years old; before they came with the saftey nut) with low hours. Still runs great. When I first broke it in a few years ago, I had it on a cub inverted. It backfired and spun the prop nut off. Prop went flying halfway accros my back yard. Got an OSF plug and that problem never happened again. Got it on a hog bipe now.

Also have an old 80GK. Runs rough, but still runs.
