RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
The service manuel say you can go as low as a 15/8. I have just ordered two 15/8's and two 16/8's and will decide how they look and perform. If you are interested and can receive a 6m file, I can send you a full knock down that I did on the 180 when I had to learn how to change a crank shaft. It is full of photographs in a Power point slide show which is why the file is so large.

Do you have a before/after bit of video illustrating the difference in sound between the stock mufflers and the new mufflers? That might sell a few more mufflers for Jim. I'm a capitalist at heart - sales are good when deserved. And they are in this instance.

Here is the video of my P-38 equipped with twin Saito 100s sporting Turbo Headers.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2IQ8ugSSW0
www.youtube.com/watch?v=qTM46P1ilJY
Noticed changes from the stock mufflers:
-about 200 RPM increase
-faster throttle responce
-with the twin, the engines are more evenly matched in needle setting, within one click of each other (not sure why)
-less goo down the airplane with the pipes I have on the mufflers (now out the bottom)
-slightly more presure to the tank resulting in a little leaner needle setting
-much better look with the mufflers now in the cowls
-uses less fuel now but still has good smoke
-very nice sound
-lighter and more compact than stock mufflers resulting in less strain on the system from vibration
Good job on the engineering of these after market Saito parts Jim.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
H I am adjusting the valves on a saito 1.00 (good times haha) I noticed that one of the valves does not close nearly as much as the other. Engine runs fine i have had 1.5 jugs through her and it was just maintenance but is this normal. If not is there any advice. Thanks

This is a re-post for RC Specialists with comparison video. In the first two (with and without the Turboheaders) both runs were made at full throttle and you can clearly here the increase in RPMs with Jim's pipes (the first run). Play at least the first two a couple times and let us know what you think.

Guys,
Thanks for the help with my Saito 180. The oil has seemed to do the trick. The motor now has compression and turns over much more smoothly now. It will probably sit another week before I am ready to run the motor. I am wondering what size prop to use. Presently, I have a 16-8 zinger bolted on the motor. The motor will be installed in a Hanger 9 Edge 540 (the older 1.20 size plane). This should come in around 12-14 lbs when completely assembled (It has been sitting awhile!). My flying style really isn't 3D, just basic aerobatic flight.
Thanks guys
Paul

OK club saito members,
I have a saito 120S. The high speed needle came out in flight and down came my showtime 4d. Well it seems the brass spray bar broke off even with the carb block. How do I get what remains of the spray bar out of the block? I have taken the carb apart, but cant get the broken part out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Argh.. tried to start the engine today can't seem to come alive and it has lost its compression.
I could use a finger to turn the prop 360deg.
Have check thru and make sure all moving parts are moving, from the valves to carb..
If still can't start then i suppose the next best thing is to send it back to Saito factory..

if it screws in, then a standard easy-out should remove the old one. Carefully drill the inside out to accomodate the easy-out, and you should be fine. Warm up the casting with a torch if it doesn't move easily. It could be Lock-tited in place, and heat releases that, as well as expands the casting.
Good luck.

W8YE,
Thanks for the pictures. I have gotten the piece out that was broken. Unfortunatelly I don't remember how it came apart. Can you walk me through how to put it back together.
Thanks again

I'm not familiar with the 120S but on the Saito 150s, the piece with the bigger threads is the actual spray bar and it fits into the carb body from the inside. There is a thin hex nut that screws onto the threads on the outside to retain it.
Then there is the part that the needle valve screws into. This piece screws into the spray bar. It has a needle valve ratchet spring that is retained by another nut that fits the threads of this piece on the short side. This nut also serves to lock the needle valve body into position.
Where the needle valve screws into this brass device it has a tiny O-ring inside where the needle itself fits in to seal the shank of the needle.
This is the part number you should have ordered http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...D=SAI450R3D84A

If the fuel nipple on the needle valve holder part does not protrude in the direction you want when tightened in place, loosen the nut next to the ratchet spring and turn the spray bar so the fuel nipple is in the desired direction and re-tighten the nut.
Some Saito spray bars have a little notch in the end. If you find a notch in yours, it is oriented towards down stream of the carburator airflow towards the engine intake manifold.
This is how it should look when you are finished

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
the FA80 lives. removed the engine and replaced the O-rings on the ends of the intake tube.
this engine has a "choke" slider on it....
squirted a can of dechlorinated brake cleaner thru all the orfices in the carb. used it to clean the engine as well..removes even the light rust on the bolt heads.
Engine idles great, and now reaches full throttle and as luck would have it, my tach needs a new battery.
ordered the rubber boots for the pushrod tubes.
this engine is designated by an I, isnt it?...
you guys have been a big help, even tho you dont know it[8D]
oh btw....the plane is made by northeast aerodynamics out of NH. Called a Bel-Air.

Well I got it all put back together(I think). Thanks for all the help. I'll have to order me a topflite P47 to test it out on since I don't own a test stand. Hahahahaha. I wonder if my wife will notice a new airplane?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Just got my Saito 180 mounted in my lastest... An ESM Cessna 180.
Got a 16x8 Master Airscrew 3 blader on it for a scale look, I've not tach'd it but seems pretty happy at idle and WOT.
Checkout this for Idle vid... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19F7kJnU2oA
