Here's the "before" picture...

I haven't seen it yet, going to pick it up on Sunday. I know I'm going to need to build a new cowl (longer) to fit the motor in properly, and it needs some paint trim. Not sure exactly what to do until I take a good look at it.

This is my first venture back into glow fuel in a few years, and I was wondering if a transmitter-based solution has been developed for fuel shut-off. Just as a safety feature, if the throttle servo hangs open or something, I was wondering if an electronic solenoid or something was available to shut the fuel supply off.

If you are running a gasoline engine there are numerous solutions to the problem, including solid state opto isolated ignition cutoffs, that are independent of th throttle servo. Do a search in the gas engine forums for engine cutoffs. If running glow, the options are not so commercially available, AFAIK. In the case of glow, you could use a servo controlled valve such as used for smoke fluid control and run the glow fuel lines into and out of that valve. Problem might be the compatibility of the valve components with glow fuel as they are usually used with petroleum base smoke oils. Search these forums for smoke systems and check if any of the valves used are glow fuel compatible. In either case, the servo or opto switch can be triggered by the fail safe feature of PCM receivers, or by a separate channel and tx switch. Good luck.

Are there still some Saito .50 fliers out there, I ran mine today for the first time since spring of 2008, I had replaced it with a Saito .62 which I lost in the woods at Andrews AFB and never found. I couldn't remember the best prop for it. Today, I ran a

Ernie, I just talked to Bobby Dove at Apex Hobbies in Tazewell, Va. where I bought the .50, it is one the last made. Bobby thinks 2003 or 2004 was the last year for them.

G'day all. I will shortly be starting my largest Saito - a 150S. I had no problems starting my 120S with an electric starter though my 100 was a real pain initially. The starter would just not turn it over. Now that it has some running under it's belt, this is no longer a problem. The 150 seems to have a lot of compression. What sort of starters do people use with these engines? I eventually used a chicken stick with the 100 and found that a back flip was the best way to go. Will this work with the 150? Any other ideas?

The 150 will be going into a Sig Four Star 120. Any prop recommendations? I am not after speed but grunt. I do have a MA 16 x 8 I think.

That prop sounds good.
I use a sullivan electric starter for my 180, no problems at all. I have a pretty big battery, though.

I use a Sullivan DynaTron with a 300 amp garden tractor battery. It starts a Saito 2.20 and SuperTigre 4500 with no problem.

We started a new 150 with a backflip bouncing against compression. This was after it backfired from a brisk forward flip and whacked my heavilly gloved hand to where I thought I would see blood after taking the glove off. No blood but very sore fingers. Another time it bacfired and ruined a very nice prop and Tru Turn spinner, throwing the prop nuts and prop a good distance away. For the first run and run-in of my 180 I am going to use an elastic stop nut in addition to the regular prop nut to keep things together and not use a spinner until it is broken in. That will dictate a hand start with a chicken stick bounced against compression like worked for the 150.

G'day Thanks all for the advice. I think I will initially try the starter with a bigger battery (or three in parallel) and if that does not do the trick then the back flip will probably be the way to go at least until I get some running under its belt. Model is coming along well.

I have been away for a year or so dealing with medical problems. One of the last things I did before taking some time off was to buy a used FA 100T (twin). The motor has very low use and was what I thought I wanted. I don't want it to become a desk paper weight but I don't have any interest in Cubs or Citrabra type planes. I am now looking and measuring to put it in a Goldberg 60 Chipmunk knowing that it will be about 1/2 lb. heavier than OS 60 2 stroke. The Goldberg is a kit plane that has never been finished and it needs to have all the covering removed and redone.
A couple of questions to those that know. What I should expect for long life from this engine? Being as it is the odd fire engine and it has no crankcase pump is there some modifications that I can make to keep the engine well lubed? I dose my other 3 Saitos with an additional 2 ozs castor to the Wildcat premium 10% fuel. Several members on the forum helped me out with some answers after I purchased the engine, but that information is now lost.
2nd question is, when did the crankcase pumps come in to existance? Did they work out very well? This engine came in black and copper colored box but I have no idea as to the age. It turns graupner 13X8 prop easily but I haven't tached it yet because I feel it has yet to be broken in.
3rd question, I do not see where anyone offers velocity stacks for this engine, are any available?

Give it the tender loving care you give your other Saitos

The pumps were on them in the beginning. Seemed to be not cost effective.

There were never any velocity stacks for this engine and they are not needed.

Should pull a 14-6 when you get it broken in.

If it was a black and gold box with no pump it was late 90's

Space, about 10 years ago I had my 1.50 on a H9 Cap 232, I was trying to start it in my back yard on a 30 degree day. I forward flipped it and it kicked back, when the second blade came by it hit my cold finger tips, my finger nails were so cold they shattered like glass, my finger tips were blue and tender for a month. I learned the back flip shortly afterward.
