I believe it! I think my last motor was a 180... this thing is like 3 150's.... lots more kick back than my 170cc gas plane. Lesson learned (the hard way). Luckily, no damage. Looks like it's time for a Super Chicken Stick!
Reyn you may have it tuned wrong. It's thre 150's maybe but they sre on a commoin crank fighting each other if you like to smooth out the power pulses through freiction losses and the old faithfull even crankshaft pulses, even a 150 on it's own boots way harder than that thing. We have an eighty one year old club member that hand starts on forwards..it's a ***** and i want one right now so i can stick it in the best warbird radial i can imagine, how you?

I'm not sure exactly what you meant, but I know it did what the snot out of my fingers! Super Chicken Stick is on the way. I know once it's better tuned it won't be as likely to kick back.

I picked up the plane yesterday. The frame is in great shape, but it needs a littlt TLC and paint, all of the servos will be replaced, new flying wires, a little frame repair, etc.. I'll order a new cowl from Fiberglass Specialties, getting a little more space between the front of the cowl and the firewall. Hopefully, it should be ready to fly in about a month. It could probably be ready to paint after a good weekend of work, but with work and holidays, it will probably be a month.

I have an old brand new Saito 45 that I have trying to bench run but no matter what I do it won't start, not even a pop. I put a brand new hanger 9 4 cycle plug in hoping for success, but no go. Can anyone help? Give me some ideas. thanks, Rick

There's not a whole lot of technology or timing to these motors.. if they have compression, fuel and heat.. they should fire. I assume if you're flipping the prop, you can feel the compression.

Turn the glow OFF... throttle wide open... flip the prop several times.. if the carb starts dripping... you have fuel. Two down, one to go.

Have you tested your glow plug and plug driver? With the plug removed, attach the driver to it... if it glows red, you're good there.

Usually, if you've checked the obvious, it's a fuel problem... probably gummed up jets or something. You can remove and clean the carb, there's not much more than a spraybar to it.

Both seals came off my front bearing on my Saito 125. I am used to a mess inside the cowl, but it was getting crazy. I noticed I had no pressure out of the crankshaft vent, so I looked inside.

I've never bought a replacement Saito bearing, either RC-Bearings or Boca Bearings. New engines don't seem to leak too bad out of the front. Saito bearings are about half the price of the Boca HP rubber-sealed bearings. Are they twice as good as keeping the oil coming out of the front?

Sounds as though you had a crankcase explosion?

Just put regular 2RS bearing in the front.

It sounds like someone may have fiddled with the timing. Any chance that it was opened up?

hmm, maybe I had it a tooth off, you suggest? always possible.
Of course, there's the occasional backfire when starting a bit too lean... It rarely happens anymore now that I've got it down...

I presume a tooth or 2 off would affect the RPM at WOT with a given prop?

These weren't stock bearings, but inexpensive replacements. The seals were not impressive, actually.

It may be that the bearings you have are not sealed but shielded. The Boca front bearing for my 180 was such. Sealed bearings are usually lubed for "life" whereas shielded bearings are not. The shield does not contact the inner race, but just protects the balls and retainers. Sealed bearings, because of the contact of the seals with both inner and outer races. have more friction than many applications will tolerate.

On a model airplane four stroke the engine oil will work its way through a 2RS rubber sealed bearing to an extent.

It's a shame they cannot seal them for good, and just pack them with some lithium grease or something. They'd never rust and last a lot longer. And the front of the cowling would be cleaner.

Why's it impossible to do this?

Be aware that most of the "rust" people claim to find on bearings is more often nothing more than burnt oil residue. I'm not saying bearings don't corrode or otherwise get rust on them but brown deposits does not always equal rust.

Amen Raven, I'll bet 75% of the bearings that get replaced on here didn't need it.

I bet a lot of bearings also get replaced when they feel rough, and are only gunked up with dried castor.

LSN is WAY outta wack.....lol
smokes like crazy at low speed and about half thottle. clears up at high speed.

i wonder, can these engines have preignition knock.
and if so, will richening the top end a bit stop it. just curios, none of my other engines have had that faint little buzzy rattle during acceleration. one of lifes little mysteries

The Saito LSN controls fuel mixture up to around 75%. It is easy to set the LSN way too rich so that it will smoke up to almost the full throttle range. This is a sure indication that your LSN needs a lot of leaning out.

Mid range is still very smokey and blubbery. But shows no tendancy to quit. Clears up once you go on to WOT.
Low speed it idles great and consistant and has great transition.
Sadly its only pulling 8400 max at WOT with a 15x8 APC
Im thinking this engine is still very low time. Starts easily. isnt marked up. and the mounting lugs only showed one set of marks.
Muffler isnt all stained either, the header pipe isnt discolored, still black oxide finish.
And that faint rattle i heard, was preignition knock. two or three clicks rich fixed that.
All in all im pleased with it.

I have three 125's and they smoke very little.

Takes about 3 gallons to break one in.
