OF, I don't think the G-62 has a removeable head so you can remove the head and bolt on a conversion head with adjustable compression. The Diesel combustion process is finished when the exhaust port opens so the harsh bark is absent from the exhaust note. The Diesels have a deep authoritive purr.

after I get the cam installed, I assemble the engine without the piston (install the cylinder and valve pushrods..) Turn the crank until both valves are opened the exact same amount. The valve springs will usually position the crank, but if not, rock it back and forth a bit until the valves are even. Look at the crank pin. If it's at 12 o' clock, it's right.
Why not install the piston before this check? With the rear cover removed, the pisition of the crankpin can be seen to insure it being at TDC. If all is ok, then just button it up withour having to remove the cylinder just to install the piston (!?!)

The valve spring pressure will center it exactly for you. With the piston in, it won't.

It's not like you need to install the bolts and torque them down or anything. and if it's a tooth off, you need to take it back off anyways. It usually takes a couple tries.

I've searched the Horizon site for velocity stacks , for the .72's and 1.00's. and am not having any luck locating them. Are these a Saito item, or after market?

 Thanks very much Mike. Looks like I'll have to design my own. My .56 is not to sloppy, but my .72's and 1.00's really mess my planes up. It is the one and only thing I dont like about them.

This is the intake venturi extension I use on all the small block Saitos up through the 100.

I don't think those ladies at Horizon have figured that part out either? I had noticed the glow plug also and the help they hire came to mind?

More tuning questions....

My 450 is idling and transitioning great, up until about 1/2 throttle. If I go above that, slow or fast, it starts bogging down, dumping out grey smoke and will quickly die if I don't throttle down pretty quick..

I would think the motor is too rich, but leaning out the high end has little effect. I can't get it up to full throttle to properly dial in the needle. I've tried needle settings anywhere from 7 turns out to about 3 1/2, and the results are always the same. Saito says to start tuning with the needle about 5 turns out for a rich break-in period. I'm through almost a gallon of fuel, plenty for a break-in, but it just doesn't seem very responsive above 1/2 throttle.

Any ideas? These are all new fuel lines (large diameter), and the carb inlet is below the level of the tank. I've ordered a fuel pressure regulator, but it hasn't arrived yet.

It sounds like you're flaming out on at least one cylinder, possibly even two of them. Are you keeping glow power on throughout the entire throttle range? I think your low speed needle needs to be leaned out some more... possibly quite a bit more.

I hate to go cranking around on the low speed needle before I get the high set, but I might have to. Right now, it's just about even with the throttle arm, just over 7 turns out. That should be very rich, but if it's idleing and transitioning to half throttle OK, I hate to go messing with it too soon.

Now I know why I moved to gas engines!

I'll eventually get this motor dialed in, and I know it's going to be a screamer.

Reyn, always set the HS needle at peak before setting the LS needle, you'll be trying to compesate for the rich HS needle and set the LS needle too lean in some cases making the HS needle inneffective.

Hello and Merry Christmas all; I have many Saitos of nearly all sizes, and am happy with all of them. Now I'd like to try a Saito gas experience. I'd like it to be successful. I thought that to get the most use from it it should be a 80 to 91 size, so I don't have to haul a huge plane around. I'd like to hear that the FG14 is user friendly, and at least as good as my current saiitos. I haven't been able to find Brian Winch's report on the FG 14. The british mags are getting spotty lately.

If the FG14 isn't worth it, I'm willing to go to the FG20, that would be great in my spacewalker, or my Ultimate, or maybe my Funtana. I hope they have ironed out the problems owners were having with the FG20

When is the release date, Santa want's to know.

Some people in Europe have had the FG-14 since September.

It is not in the USA or Canada as of yet.

Some people have had no trouble with the FG-20 and others find it impossible.

The ignition on some of them seems flakey?

Yet all the ignitions on the Saitos are the same except for the plug boot. The FG-14 & 20 have a 1/4-32 size Saito spark plug and the FG-30 & 36 have aNGK CM-6 plug

The FG-14 and FG-20 have a Saito pump carb. It has a secondary surge diaphragm but no regulator diaphragm like Walbro on the FG-36 and FG-30.

The smaller Saito carb does not have a strong pump so the carb must be plaved adjacent to the engine like in a glow situation

Needle adjustment on the smaller carb is sensitive. The needles must be finally set by flying the plane and returning to the ground and fine tuning the mixture for effect in flight.

I don't plan on running a gas saito right now but from the reading i've done here they must run hotter and tune much differently to someone who only does glow engines with their cooling flow re lots of fuel,When i do the fg36 sounds like the go.

Hello,
I am new to the whole internet communicating so forgive me if i miss any ediquets. I have a very old saito .91. The berrings blew up in flight and i cant seem to get the front berring cover off. Someone sugested soaking my beloved saito in anti-freeze. Is this a good idea?
