It requires a gear puller to get it off

W8ye is correct with the puller but I found the ones I purchased didn't have thin enough legs to fit into the prop driver groove. I solved this by purchasing a Toledo Bearing Separator (part no 245040). When combined with the puller this will remove your prop drivers in a matter of seconds, which is about one million times shorter than the time I wasted trying to get it off using differing methods.

The great thing is that the combination of a gear puller and the bearing separator will now suit just about any other engine I'll ever run across.

Exactly! Although I went somewhat cheap and purchased 3 different sizes of gear pullers from eBay. The bearing separator was a genuine toledo part but you can probably find something similar. The part number I quoted looks like it would suit everything us aeromodellers are likely to see (excluding perhaps some gasser monsters).

Once again, I cannot reinforce how easy these types of tools made the job. I struggled for over a week before purchasing the tools. Within 5 minutes of getting home with them I had several saito 45s apart...

BTW I'm still 'rebuilding' the Saito 45s. The 45 Sport is running again BUT a tad overpowered for my Eindecker. The older 45 still needs a carb bracket.

Is it normal for a saito .82 to making lot of clicking/snapping noise when shaking the prop hub back and forth in certain "free of compression" parts of the stroke? I havent ran it in a while and it sounds like its filled with loose bearings!

Thanks 871

That's comforting. One of the 45's I just rebuilt has a horrible clicking noise but is fine when running. Haven't completed the other engine yet but I'll see if it's the same.

I rarely wander from the Warbirds forum, but visited this forum for the 1st time because I was looking for info on my recently aquired Saito 300 twin (single carb/ single plug per cyl version). That engine will be used to power my Byron Corsair (yet to be built).

So, count me in, if I am just now joining, my Saito Club membership number must be higher than my AMA number.
However, this is not my 1st Saito engine: that would be a Saito .50 I bought about 15 years ago to power my DynaFlite Corsair (my 1st warbird).

To provide an inventory of current Saitos that I have, and/ or have owned in the past would be too time consuming. I'm sure there are many out there who have owned more than I, but all I can say is: I've owned my share, and loved every one of them.

I tried YS a couple of times: they are without a doubt more powerful for thier size, but I found them a little more challenging to get dialed in and keep them dialed in, so I went back to Saito.
Mian reasons I chose them over O.S.: power to weight ratio AND looks. OS has finally been catching up with Saito in the power to weight ratings, but Saito has NEVER LET ME DOWN, so I just keep buying and using them.

Pic is of my Top Flite P-47 ARF with Saito 100GK: note how well it blends in with the dummy radial (Saito is inverted):

That's a great looking setup... so the bottom pair of tubes are the actual Saito head?

One of the guys at our field had a 300 twin (I think it was the Saito) on a Sundowner... amazing sound and power from that motor. Good luck with it!

Thanks, and yes: the bottom 2 tubes are the Saito. The others are the alum ones for the dummy radial which came with the kit (ARF).

I did a simular thing with a Top Flite Corsair a few years back, this time a Saito .72 GK (before the .82s were introduced). Note how the GK valve covers blend with the yellow cowl ring:

Very nice.

Here's a picture of my 450 in the Waco I'm finishing now... not the most "scale" motor on the planet, but it should be fun to fly.

First of all it is never going to run 12,000 rpm with a 13 X 6

They run close to 10,000 with a APC 13 X 6

Check your valve clearance

Check your intake manifold for a vacuum leak

Check your valve timing

Some Saito engine & dummy radial installations. The Monocoupe and Beech Staggerwing are 1.70 radials; the Gee Bee has a Saito 1.20.

Saito doesn't recommend 12000 RPM; that is the RPM limitation. The APC 13x6 will probably increase performance for you by a good margin for testing RPMs on the ground. However, it is all about how it performs in the air.

The velocity stack helps this engine.

Merry Christmas everyone!

How about a trivia question? I willoffer a free TurboHeader of your choice to the first post with a correct answer to the following questions:
Moderators excluded, please.

1. Who patented the first four stroke engine and what year?

2. Who built the first operable four stroke engine and what was it called?

You must be specific and complete in your answers and quote your source.

I ask that a moderator validate the answers.

The four-stroke engine was first patented by Eugenio Barsanti and Felice Matteucci in 1854, followed by a first prototype in 1860.

a few years ago, this would have been quite a different research task.

How about question 2? Post must include complete answers to both questions.
