Thanks for the info. I saw the horsepower rating, 0.86, which seems really low compared to the 1.6 the OS46 puts out, so I was concerned that the FA50 would not have enough power for a 40 size. I realize that 2 cycles put out a lot more horsepower but less torque.

I am started build a Sig Something Extra from kit. Maybe I will put the FA50 in that. There is just something cool about a four stroke.

I don't think the OS .46 is power monster myself.

It's deceptive when you first look at 4 strokes. You get a lot of grunt power instantly at lower RPMs compared to waiting for a 2 stroke to spin up to peak. Generally speaking, you are better off with larger props on 4 strokes.

The .50 would pull the SSE around fine, but it would be a little underpowered on verticals, etc is my guess. I've seen one with a Saito .72 fly but the owner never pushed his where we could see what it could do.

I have the OS46 in a Tower Kaos and it is ok; I have to use full power to get it through loops. I have a YS 63 in a Hangar 9 Aresti and it is a rocket - really too much power for me; don't get much above 1/2 power. I have another YS63 in a Seagull Edge540 but haven't had the guts to fly that plane more than once.

The 50 in the SIG might be just right for where my flying skills are. I also like the idea of tinkering around with an old engine that I got for free to see if I can get it running right.

Thanks for the info on prop sizes - I have a bunch in that range.

Once I get the muffler I will probably be asking for help on break-in/tuning.

I took my Waco with the Saito 450 to the field today for the first "real" flights (I had one really short about a month ago in the rain). All I can say is WOW,... What a motor!

The plane weighs about 30 pounds, and this motor, with a 22x10 laminated prop, will almost go vertical. It's a scale Waco, so not the most acrobatic plane by today's standards, but with a sound like a flying Harley, it sure turned some heads today!

It's a keeper!

Now you’re making me anxious for better flying conditions here, I'd be happy just to fly one of my old planes. Flying on the Sim is like phone sex, makes you want to do the real thing even more. Sounds like you had a ball, wish the weather here was good enough here to do some flying. Today would have been alright except for the snow and ice still on the ground. It is around 50 degrees and light winds right now. But it would be like taking off and landing on a graveled road. The Waco is what is in your avatar isn't it; it looks to be gorgeous in the air and on the ground.

yep... here's another picture.

The weather here was perfect this weekend, at least for February. Temps both days were probably in the mid 60's. It's been either snowing, raining, windy or all the above just about every weekend for the past 2 months, so today was a real treat.

This is a 1/4 scale Pepino Waco... I bought it about 4 months ago from the builder/owner down in Jacksonville. It had been sitting in his shop for years. I cleaned it up, painted it, and put the Saito 450 on it. I still think it's way tail heavy, I have to put a good bit of down elevator in it just to hold it level. Funny, though... it seems to land just fine. I'm used to tail heavy 3D planes, so maybe that makes it a little easier.

Anyway, this thing is a ball to fly, and if I can keep it in one piece long enough, it's sure to teach me some rudder control!

I still need to think about some trim stripes on the plane, but I'm afraid that taping off for them would peel the yellow paint off when I remove the tape.... for now, it's just a big yellow plane.

That's the way the weather has been here since back in December, or so it seems. Today I can actually see some of my yard for the first time too.
Your plane has some really good lines and looks nice the way it is. But some kind of trim would look good too, I just would have a hard time deciding on what trim scheme to put on it.

If I find the courage to start taping it off, the original plan was to do the trim in a deep red color... scalloped lines on the upper and lower leading edges, a stripe going back on the top of the turtle deck and up the front edge of the rudder, and double lines down each side of the fuse. Also the scale trim colors on the cowl bubbles.

I'm just afraid that after my paint job on top of the original paint job and years of glow fuel soaking in, the paint may peel of when I start un-taping. I should try a test area under the fuse or somewhere that wouldn't show too bad if I needed to repair a peeled off paint job.

Hey we all make excuses sometimes. Me, I've got three planes to get ready for spring, two are ARF's still in the box. The third just needs some TLC, you know stuff on a second hand plane you just don't like the way it was done, or is that just me, but it is almost done. Just can't seem to get started on th either two though.

Yep.. that second-hand thing is part of the problem here. It sat untouched so long that there are several wrinkles in the covering that just won't iron out. I've ironed them down, it looks great for 10 minutes, then they're back again. That kind of bummed me out on doing a nice, careful paint job.

Your engine can't create more horsepower without creating more torque. Two-stroke or four-stroke. HP=torque x rpm. Let's put this puppy to rest, once and for all time.

Ed i agree,would it help if the arf kit manufacturers put a more realistic engine choice on their boxes.Something like..if they recommend a 46ax for example then they should be saying if you like fourstrokes bang an 82 saito or 91 os in it??

That would be a great idea, as far as we modelers go, but you can't expect a kit manufacturer/reseller to limit their market by being realistic.

Will it "fly" with a .52 four-stroke? Sure, but the performance will not be in the same range as when being powered by a four-stroke engine of .82 CID, which would truly equal that performance provided by a .46AX two-stroke. Unfortunately, lots of folks don't understand what we "purists" are trying to say.

Fuel line question

I have a Saito 100 in my H9 Miss America Mustang and love it!! Does it matter what diameter fuel line i use? I have heard people at the filed say anything above a 60 size motor should have the larger diameter fuel line.

OUCH!

I had a friend at our field on Sunday that had a similar incident with his DA-100. He's one of the most thorough, conservative pilots you'll find anywhere. He was going vertical for a hammerhead or something, and the motor just let out a big "crunch" and died. He was high enough that he got the plane down safely, but one of his cylinders was hanging off just like yours. Painful to see, no matter how big or small the engine is.

Yours looks like it's probably a total loss... best of luck with whatever you do.
