Rear bearing failure?.That seems like a lot of lead zip tied to the engine mount.If you replace the engine will it be a bigger saito? good luck.

Ed blw's post #16705 describes it well i think though i'm not sure what an SSE is.As an example we have five 46 size decathlons flying at our field.One has an os46 and flies scale but is easily outclimbed by the next which is powered by a 62a.The two flying with 82a's in them have plenty in reserve and the 91 os does well also.It's heavy but when you taxi out and hit the throttle hard the 82 will have it off the ground in twenty feet and you go straight vertical carrying 14oz's of fuel.

These kits and ARFs are very popular here for some reason. They are good for Saitos if you can get the ground clearance for 12" props. I have a .72 that would be a perfect engine for it if I only had more height above the grass.

That is an interesting idea. I only mentioned a 12" one because that is pushing clearance. The best prop for the .72 seemed to be the APC 13x6. It turned that pretty much in the 10K range from what I remember. I'll look at those Graupner 3 bladed props because I do want to put the .72 on the SSE. Thanks.

Do you mean the 11" or 10" prop?

I thought you meant the 11". I'll do a trial fit with the .72 and then order it.

I've already raised the fuselage with a shaped 1/4" block underneath. I flew the plane with an APC 12.25x3.75 and had to keep the nose up about 20 degrees on takeoffs and landings. The blade tips were still stained green from the grass.

I know there has been some postings here about both .72 and .82 engines on the SSE, and it is supposed to be a rocket.

G'day OF. I have just sold a Somethin' Extra to a mate. It has a Saito 56 in it and flies surprisingly fast for a plane with such a thick wing. It is a bit too aerobatic for me which is why I sold it. I had a 12 x 6 on it for the test flying and it probably really needed less pitch.

The first flight was quite "exciting". I had it on low rates (lower than Sig recommended" but it wanted to roll all over the place which made for a heart stopping first flight until I managed to trim it. At that point I put in about 60% exponential which made it totally dead so I reduced the setting to 30% and it was quite nice to fly like this.

The 56 was fine for normal aerobatics but I don't thing it would be a 3D proposition but as I don't fly 3D this was not a consideration.

Mine was built from a kit and the kit is very fast to build and very easy to cover with Monocote. I recently imported a similar kit from Sig. The kit cost about $80 and the postage was about $75. This is not too bad considering that Sig stuff is just about impossible to get here in Oz.

I think I will end up building another one some day and may try my 72 in it. Blokes in Queensland were putting Super Tigre 51s in them.

Hello jeffie well i meant what i said dumb as it may sound we don't see them,look nice tho.If he's a kiwi and as close as you say he may be a bit dumb as well,i'm a kiwi and think i can say that.

Read what you said with interest and how's the flying weather there?? bloody awful here we have a record breaking summer heat wave and 110 in the old water bag today so little flying done.Good op for a few colourful stories shared among'st the guys and some benchracing went on too.Thank God for trees.
My 220 was showing the first signs of corrosion so i've banged it into a 74" seagull model percival mew gull.Beautiful small full scale 1930's record breaker alex henshaw flew to the cape and back,a record for that class of aeroplane that still stands today.Will use an 18x10 for the test flight and feel as you described,they say if you prop the 220 nice and coarse and keep the revs down they sound scale but watch out if you dive it and the prop gets a chance to bite,interesting.Good flying

I have taught students on the SSE. It is a very good trainer with sensible rates/expo, and lands nice and slow. It is crazy with the rates at 100%. Mine was given to me by a guy who was tired of fixing the crash damage. We think it has been crashed 7-8 times. I had a mid air with it and another SSE. I keep patching the damage.

The .56 would fly it well, but I agree it wouldn't hover the plane. Mine had a .46FX and it would hover. An Evo .46 will hover it and pull out pretty good. I can't hover but the guy who gave to me does it sometimes.

The great thing about the Somethin Extra is that it has good manners.

It doesn't fall out of the sky when the engine quits or tip stall on approach to landing

It is well behaved

It can perform very well though not perfect in the 3D manner.

Very nice flexible design available in both kit and ARF versions

Hello guys are you good>??me not went flying today and the models came back good but it was more of a dare for most.We or most are shagged out and lucky to have our planes in one peice air was hot hot and no lift so all hitting the throttle hard and flying 5 mins.

I'm cold and no way am I flying in this weather. About 14" of snow since yesterday, but we did make it to 26 degrees F today. Did go to an R/C Expo and swap meet today, not much there this year, didn't see anything I could not live without. Only came home with a couple of odds and ends and one model.

Rained all day here today, but tomorrow looks ok. Put plane on charger and should be at the flying site around 8:30 tomorrow morning. I feel for you guys in the East.

This has been the longest coldest winter we have had in about 25-30 years, and have broken snowfall records from the seventies. Last year we did get a day here and there that were in the upper forties and fifties and good flying conditions. We haven't been above forty but one or two days since November. But I understand, some one has to suffer, and might as well be you.

G'day OF. Over here in NSW it is calm, warm and sticky. I suspect we are in for some thunderstorms.

Just went flying. Took the Kadet Senior with its Saito 56 and the Four Star 60 with its Saito 100. Flew the Kadet twice and the 4* once. Very pleasant.

I fly Mode 1 as the club in Orange where I learned to fly is all Mode 1 but here in Dubbo it is mostly Mode 2. Today we did a buddy cord experiment with the Kadet and my Spectrum DX7 radio and an older JR 2610. We found you can set up the DX7 to work in Mode 1 while the student plane is set for Mode 2. Very handy. The bloke I wanted to give a fly to is Mode 2. He was very impressed with the Saitos. The sound, the ease of starting and the way they work.

Now I am off to the shed to do a bit more on my 80% Astro Hog which will be getting a Saito 40 for nose weight.

Hello mike i use similar gear and good to hear you explain flying saito's that way.I'm mode 2 and a few others as well as the heli guys who are all top blokes till they start flying in your face..did'nt do any flying today just went and watched as it's so good socially as well.World class heli pilot did the best spastic funcky chicken dance on the strip we've ever seen today,it's amazing what a hotted up 90 two stroke can do to an all carbon fibre heli stuck on full throttle when you spread that over 50 yards of airstrip.

How big are those astro hogs??

People most often use 61 two strokes or 91 four strokes in Astro Hogs

G'day This Astrohog is only 80% of the normal size. I did have a full size one until quite recently when it was talked out of me by a friend. It had a Saito 82 which was just about right.

The little hog is 20% smaller. The balsa in it is lighter than the stuff you get in the Sig kit too. A friend built one and used to regularly fly it with an original OS FS 40 so my Saito 40 will have a bit more power than his. His original one has now changed hands and is flying with a Magnum GP 42 which is more than enough for it.

The "kit" for the little Hog comes from a local bloke that cuts balsa and ply with laser cutting equipment. You only get the complicated bits like the fuse formers and ribs.
