Very nice job!! Question, how did you flatten the wing? I have one that I just bent the joiner rod and then made sure the rod was in the right position when assembling. But, I always thought that there was a better way. Have you converted to flaps and or flaperons? That adds a lot of versatility, and the iutility of adding as much diffewrential alerion that you want to lift the tail on turns. Again great job!

Thanks, I Epoxyed2 sheets of 5ply togeather and made my own wing jointer and bent the metal bar then Epoxyed it all togeather and clamped it till it dryed. it was a little tricky to cut out my own wing jointer with the built in front peg to slip into the the fuse hole. than had to sand down the sides of the Fuse so the wing would lay flat. did not do flaps this time around but maybe next time. that is why i love the Nexstar it a great plane to work with and repair and build when you have a Miss hap. i plan on in the future joining 2 of them togeather like a P-38 and have at leat 2 engines maybe 3on it. still working on a design i like. i am currently putting togeather the TF P-47 Tarheel Hal with all the bells and whistles (ARF) need to move and get a bigger house before i do a Kit. running out of room now pushing the wife out the door i have so much going on.
all of you have been so kind with your remarks i have only been flying for 1 year and i really love this hobby wish i would of done it years ago.

Altough I've never had a problem in all my years of working with epoxy glue, our club had a demonstration of using various viscosities of the stuff by one of our members who had a company that produced a version for modelers (Epogrip). He stated that clamping pressure should be minimal because the epoxy can be squeezed out of the joint. With epoxies, the only thing holding the assembly together is the epoxy itself, unlike some penetrating adhesives.

I have no idea what has been discussed in the last 679 pages but I have a Saito question. There is a 1.30 twin on ebay. I have recently bought a Super Aeromaster bipe. It hasnt arrived yet so I do not know what engine size is recommended. I think the 1.30 is a gasser. Can anyone tell me if that is a compatible engine for that model?I do know it is around a 9 pd model. With my building skills it will probablyweigh in at closer to 10 lbs. I would appreciate any info anyone can give me on that particuler engine. TIA.

The 130 is on the heavy side for a Super Aeromaster, even one with both wings at 52 1/2"

Got all the parts to rebuild my .80 in the mail today - except the taper collet and thrust flange, of course. Ordered the parts from an alternate source, so they should be here soon. Replaced the bearings, crankcase and carb gaskets, valve springs and keepers, piston ring and did a general cleaning and lubing during reassembly. Everything feels smooth as can be and compression is fantastic. As far as I can tell it's ready for a fresh break in once the collet and flange are here. Won't happen right away since we're supposed to be moving soon and I'd rather wait until after.

One thing seems odd to me, though, in that I'm getting a very strong pulse of air from the crankcase breather nipple on every revolution. I've double and triple checked the timing and made sure that both valves are functioning properly. It may be nothing but I sure don't remember there being that strong a jet of air coming from the crankcase vent like that. Then again it has been over 15 years since this engine last ran. Any advice?

Oh, and one more thing, does anyone know where Icould get new Saito decals/stickers? The ones Igot with the engine are long gone.

Just remember that there is nearly one cubic inch of swept volume below the piston, same as above, on the down strokes it has to come through a little teeny hole in a short amount of time. At running speeds there is not enough time for much air to flow into the crankcase through that little hole so the flow is mostly out especially at higher speeds.

I have a question for you guys. I have a well broken in Saito 150 that has been a real trooper for the past couple of years. Recently I started having a problem with the engine at high throttle. It seems to load up and gradually drop RPM until it quits (fortunately my Super Stearman has survived the dead stick landings). The engine starts easily and peaks at about 8500 rpm with a 16x8 Master Airscrew Classic Series prop. After I richen the engine about 400 RPM, the RPM gradually decays until it dies around 6500 RPM. I thought it was too rich, but as I try to lean the engine it quickly becomes too lean and dies. If I try richening the high end more than about two turns out from closed, it loads up and dies. I have changed fuel tanks, all fuel tubing and the glow plug with no improvement. I also tried leaning the low end, but no luck. Any ideas of what I'm missing (besides good engine tuning skills)? Thanks in advance for any help!

Thanks for the explanation dave,is that why you need a bigger pipe size if you extend the breather pipe so you have some static air in large enough amounts to get conviently sucked back up into the engine at will?

i've had similar problems with a 150. mine starts easy, idles fine, transitions great. i used to think it was heat related but i'm not so sure of that now. it never actually died on me but would 'really' bog down 3/4 throttle and up.
mine is in a Sukhoi ... i opened up the bottom of the cowl to see if that would help. it did a bit so that is why i had thought it was getting too hot. i seem to recall though a few times happening on cool mornings... so that theory doesn't hold up.
is yours the HC model?

John, what plug is currently in it, to me 400 rpm rich is a lot but that's just me. It sounds like a lousy plug that is cooling off after you richen it up. A new Saito SS or Fox Miracle plug will fix it right up.

Hobbsy,
I bought some Fox Miracle plugs for my ASP 4.00 radial because the cost of the O.S. F plugs are getting out of hand. I still use the F's on my Saitos but I figured the ASP might be able to use the Fox plugs.

I noticed that the reach is about 1/16th of an inch longer on the Fox plug as compared to the O.S. Is that an advantage or disadvantage when running those plugs?

Thanks for the good ideas guys.

I don't believe the issue is cooling as I have been troubleshooting with the cowl off on cool days. The engine is not the HC model.

I am using OS F glowplugs. They had served me well in the past, but will try the Saito SS plug. I'll try the different plug and see if there's a difference.

I have not tried a Perry pump or Cline regulator, but will keep that in mind if the glow plug change doesn't do the trick.

You might want to get it out and on a test stand so you can make changes one at a time until you get the problem corrected. This will give you access to the whole engine and a completely controlled enviorment.

Hey Bob, I don't know the answer to that, but know that day in and day out the Fox Miracles do a great job. The Miracles were a cure all for the MDS engines and I use them in glow Super Tigres and Fox's too. The Enya #3 is a very good plug also and in fact may be the endurance king.
