RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
OS-f never were my favorite, I have two and got tired of trying them in various engines and never seeing any difference. In my opinion the Fox Miracle, Glow Devil 4c special, the Saito SS and the Taipan Silver are all equal to the F in every way. I don't think I'm alone in that.
RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Am I missing something here? I have several O.S. engines, small and large, and have never had to change the glow plugs. They are all original. All engines run great. This is over the last 15 years of flying. I also have several Saito engines from the 3.00 twin, 3-1.25's, 1.00, .90 twin. All using the glow plugs that came with them. Have not burned one out yet and all engines run great. Have always used PowerMaster fuel, 18% synthetic/caster oil, 15% Nitro. I do sport flying and some 3-D flying. Have two 90" J-3 Cubs, Edge 540, Christen Eagle II, 4 Funtanas, SlowPoke, and P51 Mustang. They are all being flown at this time.

The only issue I have ever had with an OS plug was the threads on a new one (F), looked like they had been hit with a hammer. Like you they just don't wear out!!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
The numbered Saito plugs were hard to get I usually sourced them out of Hong Kong (Winning, Cindy was nice to me), as I remember No 2's were for my 50 and No 3's were for the 65. We used the McCoy MC4 a lot.
Re you guys not getting the numbered ones there appears to be a deal of difference with data and supplies such as plugs etc between Australia and the US, interesting.

I don't use anything but the OS "F" as all I have are four strokes. There are some Saito "SS" and Hanger 9 Super Plugs here and there as they came in the engines
The numbered plugs are for two strokes I used to use the #8 unless I needed a hot plug then it would be a A3 or #6

I've always used the Fox Miracle Plug in my Saito. Tried an OS-F and had trouble getting it to idle reliably. Switched back to the Fox and it ran like a Swiss watch.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
G'day I have been flying RC models since 1989 and using four strokes since about 1990. I have only once in all that time ever replaced a four stroke plug (apart from a couple that I blew up with 12 volts). My Saito 56 is now about 8 years old and still running a plug I put in when it was about 1 year old (after the 12 volt experiment).
I have had engines from an OS 26 to a Saito 150 and in all cases, I just have used what ever plug came with the engine. Saito in Saito, OS in OS. When I have had to provide a plub I have used OS plugs, usually in ASP and Magnum engines and in my Lasers. I use OS simply because they are all that I can get. At the moment I have a couple of Enya No 3s that I intend to try should a plug need to be replaced.
The only plug I have replaced because it did not work was a Saito plug in a Saito 72. The engine was near new and just would not idle. The plug looked perfectly normal. I put an OS F in it and it was totally happy.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
All interesting comments about the plugs, engines in general use don't have a plug change very often, (like in my car) but as a part of the general tune up each couple of years I generally replace the plugs in my sport engines, the competition ones are a different matter.
For Mike 109 HHQ has them is stock check with your local hobby shop or give Paul Farthing a ring. Col Taylor is a good source as well in your neck of the woods

Thanks LadyFlyer for a clue about the clicking in the valve train. That was driving me crazy because there was not excess play in the clearances. You are the best and a real lady under all circumstances.

Mike- that plug in your .72 may have just been a victim of the engine breaking in.
I break in an engine with the plug that came with it. When I'm ready to fly it, I take the plug out and make a note of where it came from. New engines always get a new plug right before they begin flying.

Little metal particles or even non metallic ones that get on a plug's element during operation will lead to its premature demise

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
G'day
I think you are right that the plug suffered during the running in process and died as a result. I have generally been lucky with plugs but this one was a genuine non goer. The engine would just not idle with it.
I had a similar experience with a Super Tigre 51 at about the same time. It too ran in fine but then would not throttle properly. I stuck an OS F in it (the only spare plug I had) and it now runs perfectly. Actually, I should get it out and fly it again in its Stick.
Most of the plugs that I killed were the result of plugging the plug driver into the 12 volt starter socket. Instant death.
Cheers

How do you get them to do that, the Fox Miracle works perfectly in all my engines that I've tried them in and I've flown more with the Fox than any other. I'm not tyring to be a bad guy but our experience is opposite.

I've run a Miracle in a ASP 65 four stroke and most days the Miracle would run perfect and then first thing you know it just would not idle worth a toot like it was cold. So I changed it out with a OS "F" and left the plug in my flight box.
A few months later a guy needed a plug in his double rocker OS 120 so I gave him the Miracle. He runs Miracles in all his four strokes and that is all he uses almost like you.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Ref: How to set the timing of SAITO 72.
Can anybody please tell me in simple worlds (special tricks) or refer me to a ppt or youtube presentation on how to set the timing of SAITO 72. I just change the bearings and found that the operating manual includes very limited information on how to do it. Also, which one is the most appropriate size of propeller to run it in a Goldberg Tiger 2. I am using 12x8.
Thank you in advance for your kind reply.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
For the Saitio 72 a 12 X 8 is OK
Set the timing by having the crankshaft pin at top dead center
The cam has a dot on the gear. This dot goes straight down
There is a hole in the intake cam lobe. A pushrod will engage this hole when stuck through the intake cam follower hole to hold the cam steady with the dot straight down
The valve lash is set .002" to .004"
