Yeah, I hope I didn't cross thread it either. It's in there tight right now and I'm not taking it back out until I have to!

Ok, I'm new to Saito's. Helping a friend set up a plane with a 125 Saito. Both needles were disturbed and I'm needing to set them to the factory settings. The manual calls for 5 turns out on the high end needle. Does that sound correct? Seems like a lot. Also, I don't find a low end setting. It just states not to touch it at first. I'm quite sure it has been moved on this engine.

5 turns out on the high needle is for break-in only. Once broken in the high needle will need to be adjusted in (clockwise) to get top rpm, then back out to drop the rpm about 200 rpm. I believe the original factory settings are: lightly screw both needles in until they stop. Back the low needle out 1 1/8 turns, back the high needle out 1 1/4 turns. That should be close enough to get the engine started.

Rex, start with the LS needle about 1/16th" below the level of the plastic throttle arm. Then run the engine with the HS needle 3 turns out long enough to stabilize its temperature, then slowly peak it at full throttle. (leave at this setting or you'll end up chasing the needles all day since they effect each other some), You'll most likely end up about 1.5 to 1.75 turns out, now procede to lean the LS needle 1/8th turn at a time checking the top rpm and transition after every other change. While doing this keep lowering the throttle setting to the lowest idle you can get at each setting. When the engine acts lean and hesitates on opening the throttle, richen LS about 1/8th turn. Its better to have a good reliable transition than the slowest idle you can get. The LS needle controls the fuel mixture for about 85% of the throttle range so it has a huge effect on economy. The LS needle on this .56 is typical setting.
Oh yes, as John stated, richen top rpm down 200 rpm, I like to do this with whatever tank you're going to fly half full and half empty[8D] at the same time and go fly.

The LS needle is actually a sleeve and you are adjusting how far it travels over the fuel discharge slot. Some call it a "cats eye"

i have a saito 72 four stroke with no compression. The rokker arm came off the valve, looks like it must sit in a detent, so i put it back in place. when i tryed to start it it popped once then no compression again. Both rocker arms are in place so i guess i bent a valve? Any suggestions? Should i work on it myself or send it off to Horrizon?

Charlie, I may be wrong but I suspect the valve stuck open and let the pushrod come out of the rocker arm, if so the valve may be fine, just stuck. If it is the exhaust valve just pull the pipe out and lube and clean the stem with some NAPA carb cleaner. It is not only a cleaner but a very slick very thin lube. Of course you can do likewise to the intake valve by pulling the carb and inlet pipe.

I am buying a Funtana X100, Im wondering if I should buy a Saito 125 for it or a 100 or 115?
Also my 100 attached to my Mustang P51D almost got lost. I lost 2 screws in mid air. I have used RTV and they still became loose. Any suggestions on what else to use?

Depends on what kind of flying you do. For 3D I would go with the 125.

What kind of mount is on your P51

It is a metal mount. It fits well to the 100 except for the screws comming out. I will hate to have to put nuts behind the firewall because I will have to take out the battery and the on board glow ignitor, but if nothing else I will have to.

Hobbsy, Thanks, yes i believe the valve was just stuck. Yesterday i checked it and i had compession so the valve must have closed. Thanks for the tip on the Napa carb cleaner i will get some today.

Hi Dave, I had just that happen on my 1960 Corvair. It ran like crap on just 5 cylinders. I pulled the rocker cover, saw the rocker arm just laying there, loosened it all up and reset the pushrod in the rocker arm and ran it many years more.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

Sincerely,

Richard/Club SAITO #635

Hey Richard, did you try to fly any Saitos yesterday, I drove to our daughters in Ashburn yesterday, what a miserable trip. It took about 3 hours each way instead of the usual two. Congrats on the Corvair, great car. Several years ago the NHSB retested a Corvair and decided Ralph Nader was wrong.

I really regret not getting to fly yet this season, our daughter is in the Loudon County Hospital but may come home Monday.

Lop, the 1.00 and the 1.25 fit on the same mount holes, the 1.15 is different.

My dad stuffed a Corvair engine in a Karman Ghia. I have no idea what year it was.

My neighbor had a red Galaxy like the link shows. He also had two NIB Indians from the Army. One was still in the crate. Once every year he would ride one of them around the neighborhood.

No flying for a while, too windy and rainy. Our club has a float fly near Bealton on Saturday. Other club has a big Heli event both days.

There is a red '65 or later Corvair for sale near one of our flying fields. I have been tempted to check it out My '60 is long gone (I traded it for a dirt bike). But, I still have a set of 5 of the turbine type wheelcovers for it and the workshop manual for the later series.

At the last real job I had, one of my workmates had a big V4 road bike, and rode with a gentlemen's bike club. I was about to do the same when one Monday he came in withouit his riding gear and helmet. Surprised, because it was a great day for riding, I asked him. He said those A**H***s out there had tried to kill him over the weekend and he got rid of the bike and got a 1962 Ford Galaxy convertible instead. Beautiful red with white top and upolstery.e a bike again.

In high school. there was a scam going around where you could buy an Army Harley still in cosmoline and in a crate for like $250.00. Several guys (and one "girl") bought into it before it was found to be a hoax. I would have been scammed also if I had had the money.

Regards,

Richard

Dang, Richard, I didn't know that surplus Harley thing was a scam. Like you, had I had the money, I would have sent it to them too.

I have a really nice bike sitting in the garage. I would trade it for a running Corvair in a heart beat. I loved Corvairs, even the van versions.

Went riding with this girl about early 1961 and she had a Corvair convertible with the Power glide shifter on the dash. She gave it the gas with the shifter in low range. It got to 30mph in low range and that was all she would do. She reach up and bumped into high range. Wow - - what a ride.

Those old Corvairs would run forever if you kept oil in them.

Had a cousin killed in one. There was a stopped car chain reaction accident and the steering wheel shaft popped up out of the column and penetrated his chest.

A friend had an Indian Papoose that was presumably dropped with airborne troops so they could scoot when they got down. It was like a minibilke with a 2 stroke engine and a centrifugal clutch. No gears. We rode it on the beach at Daytona in 1966 on our way to the Sebring 12 hour races. (no, we did not ride the Papoose all the way to Sebring). Then I got married[8D]

Richard
