I just aquired a used saito 150 at a good price and have taken the back plate off to inspect I found that the old owner has removed it in the past and half of the gasket is missing.
Can I just use loctite gasket sealer or do I need to get a gasket for clearance purposes ?

You would need to check the clearance between backplate and crankpin and connecting rod bigend with crank in rear most position if you have a little end float in the bearings.If your not sure of what clearances your looking for it would be best to replace gasket or make a replacement from card stock the same thickness as the original taking installed compression of the material into account.
Yes,you can use the sealer without gasket if you have at least .010" clearance.

Making a gasket - all you need to do is cut the center hole. Cut it small and fit it to the back plate.

mount it on the engine with the back plate and trim around the edges with a razor for the outside shape.

The screws will make their own holes

Other then that it appears to be in good shape.

Unfortunately the plane was a wreck it has been sitting out in his storage building for a number of years and has warped so much it is unrepairable so I now have the 150, and all of the electronics for $100.00 not a bad deal I think
I'm building another 10-300 to put it in right now.

No wonder your smiling,i would be too.
Double check valves are free in their guides and check valve clearance,lubricate valve guides and also a couple of drops of oil on rocker bearings and rocker to valve stem and rocker to pushrod points and down pushrod tubes to lube the lifters and get plenty of oil into cam area by filling the crankcase with back cover off and leave engine for a bit nose down with cam cover lower most plus a couple of drops in cylinder,little and bigend of rod then spin it over by hand a few times with plug out to get the oil circulated before closing up and running.

Thanks for the advise I'll be sure to do it.
The guy is afriend of mine and he hadn't flown it years his wife told him to clean out his storage building so he did.
He does not know it but she is getting him a new harley for christmas.
To bad about the YAK that it was in the fuse was twisted to the right so bad that it could not be straightened and the wing was almost as bad.

Hi Jimmy Hoffa,
I made a spreadsheet years ago that might help. It has four examples on it. In the first example, I highlighted what would happen if you took one gallon (128 oz) of 10% nitro fuel with 18% synthetic oil and addedd 1/4 cup (4 oz) of castor oil to it.

You'll see that the fuel gets slightly diluted (nitro content goes from 10% down to 9.7 %, not a big deal) but the total oil content goes from 18% to almost 20.5 %.

I uploaded this as a pdf. I hope that it's not too choppy to read. Let me know.

Rebuilt my Saito 1.70R. Still drops cylinders on transition. Ran low speed needle 6 turns out for 2 years, but now am changing to the recommended 3 turns to see if that helps. Also changed the onboard glow battery to 1200 mah NiCd. I have 1900 mah NiCd on order. Will try again tomorrow with the low speed needle at 3 turns. Also tried hotter Enya #3's, but that didn't seem to help. Any other ideas?

Hello. I just purchese a Saito fa 270 twin. I'm wondering why it does not have an Intake Velo Stack. Is it needed? Whats the difference when you install it?
Was it installed in the  latest series of this model?

I wanted to mention that if you haven't checked the valve gaps on your engine or engines recently, it might be worth the effort.
I decided to check the gaps on my venerable Saito 80 last night and I was surprised to find the gaps at zero.
Anyway that might explain why it was acting flaky recently.

I was also pleased that when i took the valve covers off, the rocker arms, etc all looked nice and pristine and like new, no rust or corrosion. so some castor oil goes a long way. But then of course I only run 5% nitro glow fuel in it anyway.

Yes, I have onboard glow on all 3 cylinders and mostly OS F plugs.

Re the dropping cylinders, check the valve spring tensions, have found this problem with most 4 stroke model engines at some time or other especially as they get older.  Was always a problem on recycled ones on P&W round engines and great effort was expended ensuring match spring tension on each cylinder during engine rebuilds in the early days (60's for me)

Ed, Bill and OF, that is my younger brother Paul, he is an interesting story, he was a nuclear reactor operator on two different subs during the Viet Nam era. Has worked in the nuclear field ever since. He actually taught nuclear stuff at memphis State U. for a couple years, didn't like teaching. Like me he is 5' 9" but I weigh 205 and he weighs 175 and pumps iron a couple of times a week. Is an avid fisherman and a Patriot Guard Rider. He wears two hearing aids due to being in too many turbine rooms. I still have the hearing of a teen ager at 68 by comparison. He is a professional class bass player.

That bike is a 2009 Harley Dyna Glide Custom with the new 96 cu in engine.

First pic is him playing with a band in Hobbs, NM, second is me holding his newest bass called the Inferno.
